This peice was compiled for an art exhibition called "Santa's Last Christmas," hosted by the Paved Arts Gallery of Saskatoon and Trinity Square Video of Toronto.
Growing up my view of Christmas was almost wholly controlled by grade-school busy work, advertising interests, my co-conspiring parents, and the wisdom of my older brother ("You know all that Santa stuffs just Mom and Dad, right? Good. Now lets watch Die Hard again.").
Today kids have the all-knowing internet, with its wiki-accuracy and flame-war debates, to sort through the holiday overload.
Putting myself in the shoes of an inquisitive youngster, I did a handful of general RU-vid video searches, all using the keyword Christmas, to figure out the true meaning of the season.
I downloaded all the videos I watched and cut them together in the style of video artist Ron Rocheleau's Concrete TV. (The only exceptions being "Oh, Spinning Dot Circle" and "acetylsalicylic acid (Bufferin™)" which I used for the RU-vid loading screen intro.) The videos were downloaded on Nov 10th, 11th and 12th 2009 and cut using Adobe Premiere 7.0.
