Hello and welcome to a new series I've started where we look at NBC subsidiaries. This first episode is Alder Valley which was formed in the early 1970's and served Hampshire, Berkshire and Surrey.
I'll be working my way through as many National Bus Company subsidiaries as I can in alphabetical order over the next few months so if you like the NBC please subscribe so you don't miss out.
Hope you enjoy the video, please don't forget to like, share and comments below with your memories of Alder Valley, Aldershot and District, Thames Valley or the Londonlink services.
Many thanks for watching.
Bye for now 👋🏻

I remember those low deckers later VRs coming through Hammersmith funny they came down king street and didn’t pick up the A4 until Chiswick roundabout last VRT I saw on that route was all over white with three red stripes looked well smart still NBC and another with white upper deck windows in the style of LTs seventies livery for DMS ,metro etc

Before it was Arriva G&WS it was just G&WS and they had that rather nice two tone green livery with the red stripe, the same as London and Country.

I went to College near Guildford, in September 1992. There were two companies operating the busses on the Woking, in Surrey, to Guildford service, Alder Valley, and London and Counties. It looked as though they had both merged to form Guildford and West Surrey, using the same livery as London and Counties. I moved from there, to the village of Arborfield, and the bus between Reading and Wokingham, in Berkshire, when I first moved in, was one of the Bee Line busses, that was sold to Reading Busses. Originally the service from Reading to Aldershot was shared between Thanes Valley Traction Company, and the Aldershot and District Traction Company, which merged, as they were sharing the same route.

I think the Birmingham & Midland Motor Onimbus Company should be next.

They shared MAP networks with London Country in Wycombe(marked as Chilternlink) and in the Thames Valley based on Maidenhead and Windsor(Thamesline). Plus they were my local NBC subsidiary.

Guildford and interesting town as it had two NBC operators. One being Alder Valley and the other being London country. Great short history of Alder Valley.

Can’t wait for East and West Yorkshire, United Automobile Services and Northern.

They should have left things alone is my opinion ! In the early to mid 1970's I worked for the engineers' at Cumberland Motor Services, Whitehaven. Although sometimes the newer vehicles were very unreliable, the bulk of the fleet was maintained properly and generally they ran like clockwork. At least the bus fares were affordable, they ran on time and most people were satisfied customers. 😊

Not forgetting that Arriva pulled out of Guildford a couple of years ago, and Stagecoach took over the depot and routes if I remember correctly.

United had a similar livery to the London Link on its Middlesbrough to Newcastle services but it said Tyne Link on the side.As these were generally jointly operated with Northern they probably had the same livery too .

Worked for Alder Valley at Reading from '77 to '87. Loved my time there until privatisation loomed. You mentioned the London services, when Londonlink started the old limited stop route to London still continued branded X12 and after a couple of years was terminating at Baker Street instead of Victoria coach station. I operated that service most days until sadly it was withdrawn due to low passenger numbers which was a nail in the coffin for Reading garage alone with the M.A.P. scheme.

Reading was the only garage in AV not to take an identity as a result of MAP.

We called it Redundant line at Reading as we were all heading for redundancy, I transferred to WYRC before that happened and kept my service record.

What a great history lesson. I emigrated to Canada in 1970 shortly after Birmingham City Transport changed to West Midlands Transport. Since leaving the UK, there have been many changes and I can't wait to see your video on the Birmingham changes when you publish it. Thanks and keep up the good work.
