A1077(M) Scunthorpe - A new surprise motorway - Where did the M181 go? 

Apologies for the rain, but there's no sign of the rain stopping on forecasts anytime soon, and wanted to go out and get this!

Looks like a classic case of things being done on the cheap, with the result containing an absurdly low speed limit... A quintessential piece of British road planning!

The council clearly have no idea how to do motorway signs

The 50mph speed limit on the A1077(M) is a strange one, even now. It says 50mph and yet the repeaters are covered up and its an advisory speed limit! I was told the new roundabout on one side was for a new ring road going off to Brumby Woods. Going East it would come out on to Scotter Road (where it goes after that I couldn't tell you). I did notice a couple of disused houses just off Scotter Road that looked like they were for demolition. The new road would effectively bypass the current A18/Scotter Road gridlock area that occurs around 4-5pm.

If I’m honest I think this is one of the best thing to have happened to our motorway network in recent history!

Best thing to ever come out of Scunthorpe that! The M181, I mean. 😂 All jokes aside it will ease congestion at Berkeley circle on Doncaster road as they are adding a slip road halfway along Scotter road so anyone heading for the motorway can easily avoid the roundabout

From what I remember that new roundabout in the middle of the M181-A1077M is where the road for plans of the new Scunthorpe United stadium and surrounding hotels/shops etc was gonna be built. Not sure if they are still planning it.

Apparently the A1077M is a temporary motorway, guess similar to the old A18M stretch of a mile which linked up the M18 and A18 at Tudworth prior to the M180 being built, part of it on the old A18M. Guess its cheapskating to have a roundabout rather than slip roads and hence having to make one motorway into to two motorways. Plans were afoot to build a new stadium for scunthorpe united, including hotel and shopping park, also a road bypassing A18 berkeley circle bottleneck.

you've nearly been to scunthorpe twice, I think a drive by of the M58 & skelmersdale is needed, a "pathetic motorway" leading to an unfinished "new town" :P

I'd point out that given the roundabout presumably won't be under motorway restrictions, we have a new motorway not linked to any other part of the motorway network... but there's no end of Motorway signs! (2:39) Edit: Seem to be there northbound (0:45) but missing the "A1077(M)" Chopsticks sign on the left coming off the roundabout so guess these are more signs not yet in place.

Surely only a matter of time before we get a ring road, underground network and finally an international air port. And if they can dredge the Ancholme, why not a Freeport?

Strange decision. What was the point. It'll just cost more in replacing signage. Traffic planners...

Beyond renaming about half the already short M181 what was the thinking behind this? Surely making it all the A1077(M) from the junction with the M180 would make sense. Is the roundabout not under Motorway regulations? The only place I know of that (though my experience is limited) was the M4 / M32 junction north of Bristol Are there any others?

Seems odd to split 1 Motorway in to 2 separate motorways with an at grade roundabout. Wouldn't a grade separated roundabout have been better for the traffic flow, and at least give the M181 a proper junction along its short length?

Can’t help but be a nerd over the motorway signage here At 00:55 there is no start of motorway sign at all At 01:54 there is a start of motorway sign but in the wrong typeface Somehow at 02:50 they manage to get the start of motorway sign right It appears a bit of a mess, but I suppose it’s not finished yet so maybe there are some more signs to pop up

There was an accident on here once two cars didn't see the round about so they flew over they both might be injured and lots of others aswell

Now that’s very odd. M181 is now A1077(M). Very very strange. Plus why is the new roundabout being built where the M181 ends and A1077(M) meets. Very strange part of the motorway to the south of Scunthorpe. Plus has it been given a new name called “Scunthorpe Southern Bypass”.

strange. they need to at least make/upgrade at the least one road like the a19 in the north east. the a19 and the a1(m) are the only major traffic carriers up here. however, the a19 turning into m19 and/or a19(m) seems unlikely as there are too many junctions typical of an a road

Does the presence of an "M" Designation anywhere show that it a national highway maintenance responsibility, not a local highway authority one ?

Why didn't they just build slip roads to where the roundabout is, call it J1, and have the M181 as one single motorway? Never understood our road planners....

The M181 is going to lose its motorway status and become the A1077. Read about the M181 on wikipedia

I really don’t get the point of having another motorway replacing another motorway halfway through it… I think that the M181 should just be replaced by the A1077(M) for some reasons, 1. The M180 is MUCH bigger than the M181 and it should have just been. A1077(M) 2. Even tho the A8 (M) was so small.. it was literally there for about 2-3 months then changed it to a junction road.. and I feel they should have done that with the M181 but changing the whole road to A1077(M) . Just my honest opinion!! I think they should just get rid of the M181.. and just change it.

Really going the extra mile to prevent people leaving Scunthorpe. All that money to build a new road leading to Westcliffe, its like they made a tourist attraction for people to go on a poverty safari.

Clearly not done any research as you would find that at the tesco roundabout the A1077 carries on straight from there all the way through to South Killingholme!!!!!
