A119 dash cam - hard wire install - 2006 G35 sedan

In this video I walk through the process I used to hard wire my new SpyTec A119 dash cam into my 2006 G35. The process for hard wiring should be nearly identical for most vehicles with the exception of model-specific wire routing. If you car has side airbags (typically tucked into the A-pillar), I would advise extreme caution if you want to run wires behind the A pillar. In these cases, the more common (and quicker) method is to run the wire across the top of the A-pillar, then underneath the weather stripping for the door.
I chose the SpyTec/Viofo dash cam for the positive reviews and great value. At the time of this video (Jan 2017), many consider it to be the best bang-for-your-buck cam in the $100 range. I paid just under $100 for mine (with GPS) on Amazon. The add-a-fuse and 12V-5V adapter helped with making it a clean installation; these were purchased for ~$10 each on Amazon as well.
With the aid of this video, I would say that the installation should take no longer than an hour. Drive safe out there everyone!

Hope you have better luck than I did. FIrst one failed after 6 mos and every replacement has been defective in some other way. Warranty person "Megan" refused to send me a new unit, only ancient s/n units other have sent back to them .

Reckon you might have mounted your cam a tad too high there chief, you may get the blue tint in your video capture. Other than that thorough install, good job. I to have a G35 coupe except in Australia we call them V35 GT as ours are JDM.

What a great video. Would this work without a ground wire? Can you explain what the ground does? l always thought it was if something got struck by lightning it had somewhere to go. (May be way off) This will be my first install so thanks for the video.

Great video, thanks! I got everything to work correctly except that the power to the new hard-wired cord is always on vs. only when the car power is turned on. I used the rear ACC power breaker. I confirmed the rear ACC powers something only when the car power is on. BUT for the new hard-wired cord, there is power to the dash cam whether the car power is on or not. Any idea what I am doing wrong?? Thx.

Getting my own rebound here...though the behavior of the power plug that I at least thought this fuse went to exhibited power only when the car power was on, I used a fuse box voltage continuity and current tester (lights up when current present) and was able to determine I was plugged into an always-hot fuse slot. I put the point of the tester on the ends of the fuse to test; there are little holes each side of the colored plastic insulator. I'm sure my multi meter would have worked just the same with a red on the fuse and the black on a bare ground metal, but the tester was under $8 at AutoZone. I continued to poke fuses until I found one that was only powered when the ignition was on, which was one of the power windows on my 2015 Accord. I switched the hardwire to this new slot and the fuse to the old slot and it works like a champ. FYI: on my car the voltages on the fuse map were listed with some in parentheses which indicated always-hot slots, which helped me confirm. Good luck. @Tim. Thanks again for the video!

Hey hows the dash cam quality so far? If I were to take the dash cam off the windshield would I be able to put it on again without having it falling or would I have to buy some 3M tape of some sort?

Cam quality is great so far, although admittedly I don't often pull footage to review. After the initial installation, it basically just sits there out of sight and out of mind. I bought the cam with the optional GPS receiver. They are separate units, and it is the GPS receiver portion which has the 3M VHB tape on it and the power input (mini usb). The cam then slides onto the GPS receiver portion and gets its power from it. If you want to take the cam off (e.g. leaving your car unattended in a public area for some time), you can simply slide the cam off of the GPS mount and hide it somewhere.

My doubt is when the car is switched off ( ignition off) will it record or would it consume battery power. And if I need to fix rear dash cam also can I use the same fuse and single wiring? Thank you

He tapped into a fuse that only provides power when the car is turned on - therefore, camera turns on and off with the car. If you want the camera to record when parked and car off, you would get a " Park Mode kit " it gets wired the same way, only you would tap a fuse that get constant power even when car is off ( such as a dome light ) . The park mode kit wiring has an inline regulator box that will turn the cam off if battery reached 11.6 volts ( enough to start car ) it takes about 90hrs of not starting car to get to that point.

You should add an inline fuse as close as possible to wherever you're drawing power from. In my case, I used an add-a-fuse pigtail. I bought this separately from the dash cam.

There’s always power running even when the car is off from the car battery. I put in a low voltage cutoff so the camera doesn’t drain the car battery, and that usually kicks in after 12 hrs or so (you can choose the time yourself).
