"Is this the scariest movie of the year?" Yes. Yes it is. Also, me realizing I would actually be the person who's peer pressuring friends into doing this. I'm the problem, it's me.
For me, it was the Outwaters. I experienced my brother dying in front of me & getting lost in the mountain alone as a woman. I made the same sounds as in the film, incl. screaming for mom like that. To me, that film was death, my death.
I have been following RackaRacka for years practically since they started with their videos on RU-vid and there's not a more great story then watching RU-vid content creators turn into filmmakers. Only to then have their first feature be seen by people and it's very well liked. I hope they get that Street Fighter movie I think they'd kill it. I also hope this is a story that can be told for more people in the future. I mean in the sense of content creators turned filmmakers. I hope I can see that happen for myself. I want to be a filmmaker and these guys are inspiring.🙏
I'm old...in my seventies,yet I am a genuine horror fan. Not a SAW trilogy type fan but...more a Omen/Heredity type maven. But...man...this movie really freaked me out for such a low budget non American made film. The pacing is crisp and the premise is...well...creepy. I think I will view it again with friends on this weekend. Really appreciate your overview of this...very insightful and organic. a24 is firing on all cylinders with this feisty sleeper. Pulling out.. eye balls, always jar my senses...must be my Viet Nam flashbacks. Nice summer escapism romp.
I wouldn’t say this movie was necessarily scary, but it was definitely creepy. I thought it was unique that the kids treated the hand like a drug, constantly wanting a “hit”. I agree with what you said, the entity was basically tricking them into its final goal which was to get riley.
Wasn’t really as scary as I was hoping but I enjoyed the themes of mercy at play. That limbo realm they showed a little glimpse of was really interesting and disturbing
@j-dog8517 same, I saw someone say "it made me sick to my stomach!" So I was expecting some really disturbing gore and was a bit let down when it wasn't really anything dramatic as I thought it would be
@@aaunyea4799 yea same it was a little over hyped but I still really liked the movie. I'm hoping they release like a directors cut cuz the brothers said they did film a lot of pretty messed up stuff 😂.
Danny and Michael actually said in an interview that Mia went to Hell, not limbo. They apparently cut that scene down from 2 minutes to 20 seconds because "it was way too fucked up".
Another nice touch with this film was that it stopped showing the spirits during the "talk to me" party scenes after the first time they all get together and do it. I think this was an amazing touch and allows the viewer to focus on the characters and their reactions to the spirit and each other rather than provide jump scare after jump scare
Since this movie is only 90 minutes, it seems like the directors could have taken a little more time to make the teenagers’ decisions a little more believable. My big question in seeing the trailers was - wouldn’t one person’s parents see the uploaded videos? They could have used that (along with kids who refuse to participate) to enhance the drug theme - like kids going against their parents’ wishes, kids getting kicked out of the party/group for refusing to participate, etc. However, I also appreciate how they depict the dangers of addiction. That a lot of the people at the party, even if they thought it was wrong, wouldn’t say anything. And that the addicts would be in too deep to care about the risks.
I saw this in Philly since I was there for the weekend and I got the chance to watch it in an amc dine in theater for the first time and it was really great, but this movie was insanely good, and it was terrifying.
I think the best explanation for the dumbness of the characters is that they are all teens. Teens are dumb as hell, and I can speak from experience because I was an idiot as a teen. Many of them want to have fun, fit in, and just have no care in the world, so they do whatever seems "cool." Normally, stupid characters in horror movies is a poorly-written trope, but I could believe the stupidity of the characters in this movie because, like I said: Teens are dumb and they are obsessed with fitting in, having fun, and rebelling.
Even the ads that come up before a RU-vid video for this film are scary and I hate that I can't skip them. They are so disturbing I tried to figure out how to get new ads. And I love horror films but for some reason this one freaks me out but I will work up the courage to check it out :)

Definitely looking forward to this one but I kinda doubt it’ll be playing in a theatre near unless it’s rly successful. Best horror movie I’ve seen this year so far is evil dead rise
I think your missing the point how powerful peer pressure is as a teenager. I think it’s totally believable teens would act the way they do in this movie. It’s a sheep mentality. We often see how a group mentality can override common sense.
Idk, maybe I just grew up with a smarter group of friends haha. I have been in similar situations (not with demons) before where I stood up and said “nahh,” but I guess things are different now. They do a nice job pushing most of the characters down the wrong path… My main issue was with the religious guy who seems to be completely okay with demonic possession… Like, what?
Just saw it and I thought I like it. It's much better than most mainstream horror with some really terrifying and unnerving imagery, especially that Riley's tortured soul scene wtf. Basically, it's about how trauma and grief can distort someone's thinking and on how it take someone's sanity.
Wasnt really scary for me but very disturbing. I really need to see this movie again with the mindset of I'm not going to be scared so I can take in more of the movie. I really liked this movie and am going to be recommending it to anyone I can. Maybe I'll take my mom to see it lol
I never realized how many A24 films I've seen and liked, but I'm still skeptical when they release a new movie, especially if it's a horror movie. Hereditary and The Witch made me feel this way about A24.
This is the most overrated bad movie I’ve seen in recent memory… and I love horror films, A LOT. I also like a lot of A24 films. This movie wasn’t good.

I was stunned after I left the movie that it was so high on the (irrelevant) Rotten Tomatoes. You don’t have to have dumb characters to make the story happen. Be a smarter writer! I had too many issues beyond just the dumb characters. It’s beyond bad!
I wouldn’t say it was a bad film…but the hype has me scratching my head. By the third act, I couldn’t stop thinking about the horror film, Oculus, which I think is the superior story compared to this.
I think the kid that was religious was involved because he was just using his religion as a way to get out of being physical with his gf. When he's possessed the first time it mentions he doesn't like to be close physically with her. 3:42
people these days just want everything to be like real life i mean your living life why does every sci fi have to be scientific, go watch a documentary. i mean so many great movies get trashed by reviewers just because the science doesnt match real life. i mean movies and tv shows are all entertainment and if your entertained then forget the rest.
I saw an early screening of this. Heard a lot of positive buzz. However, I didn’t connect with it. Just didn’t like any of the characters. Austin, the moment at 7:08 was my favorite part. You are hilarious!
Austin, you are showing your age... hahaha... We have all seen the news where people do nothing or maybe take out their phones to film stupid stuff... sadly... The idea is original, but I was disappointed with the 3rd act and how many questions I had left unanswered by the end of the movie.
Not remotely scary in my opinion, but I thought it was pretty well made and effective at times. I just wish the first half built up the tension a bit more. It fell flat in the first half
mother! by Aronofsky (not to be confused with Mother by Bong Joon Ho, which is a better movie, his best, which is horrifying in its own way but not really a horror movie). The tension it created will never be replicated (even more extreme than Climax, at least for me).
@@thrawncaedusl717 yeaaa mother is pretty intense. I bought it to show my ex and she started freaking out at the ending scene when things really start to go down so I had to turn it off😂😂
