It surprised a lot of people back when it first dropped too and as you guys pointed out, Aaliyah was pretty much known as the queen of cool so she stepped outside her comfort zone here. And pulled it off so well even though she was only a teenager most of her career. This song was written by the legendary Diane Warren that wrote ballads for many others in the 90s including Toni Braxton, Celine Dion, LeAnn Rhimes, Brandy, and Whitney Houston. I think Aaliyah wasn't really feeling the idea of the song at 1st. Aaliyah is an underrated vocalist. She just had her own style that didn't require her performance like on here but she could deliver. This song went #9 on BBH100. Aaliyah said the fake rain was cold & it messed up her boots. When this song came out, it became my favourite from Aaliyah. This radio edit is the best version; her riffs really shows her vocal range and the music video is so captivating.This was a massive hit in the UK and everyone was obsessed with her. I feel blessed to have experienced the best of 90's early 2000's music. Aaliyah would be the same age as I am now. She was such an incredible artist that made a indelible mark on the music industry. So there are 2 versions of this song, the one on the album, released in 1996, and this one, released in 1997. She re-recorded her vocals for this one! (and they’re better. Her voice matured a lot between 1995/1996 and 1997). Also: Diane Warren specifically asked Atlantic (Aaliyah’s label at the time) and management to work with her. She liked her and wanted to write a song that would challenge and push Aaliyah vocally. Well, what a lot of people don’t know is Aaliyah LOVED being challenged musically. It’s part of why she loved working with Timbaland so much (his beats were notoriously difficult for R&B/Pop singers to sing with. His writing style was very rap/hip-hop). Anyway, Diane said that not only did Aaliyah meet her where she wanted her to go vocally, she surpassed it. Speaking of ballads, Aaliyah also recorded a demo for the remake of the movie Sparkle, which she was set to star in, (and Whitney Houston specifically chose her to star in, as she was a fan) called “Giving Up” (a Donny Hathaway cover). She belts there too! And arguably her voice is fuller and stronger in it (4 years between both songs-1997 and 2001). You have to remember, Aaliyah was YOUNG. Her voice was still changing and maturing between when she started (1993) and her last record (2001). 14-22. And people’s singing voices (especially women’s) don’t even reach their prime until their 30s.

Aaliyah was body goals. Sweet Lord, that woman had one of the sexiest bodies imho. That long torso. Sick. Add in just all around beauty, that voice. To this day, I love the scene in Queen Of The Damned where Akasha was slinking into that bar, like a snake with every abdominal muscle at work. The abs were DEF "abbing". Gorgeous. She was such a force silenced far too early.
