ABACOS Bahamas | Spearfishing Manjack Cay & Kayaking Green Turtle Cay [Ep 173]

The Northern Abacos, Bahamas have it all from tropical islands, sandy beaches, great snorkeling and spearfishing to kayaking adventures in mangroves.
We start off kayaking around the mangrove near the wreck of the Stranded Naked pontoon before an Easter potluck on Green Turtle Cay. Shortly after we sail over to Manjack Cay where we find extraordinary snorkel and spearfishing. The glassy conditions make for great snorkeling around the outer reef on the Atlantic side. Filmed April 2021.

I have to say I'm most certainly not a fan of swimming in close proximity of sharks. I know of a few people that think nothing of it, but I say good luck to them as long as I don't have to be part of that dive group! I loved the blend of overhead drone footage with the underwater scenes. It's around minus 6 degrees Celsius in this part of Maine right now so it does my soul good to watch your videos from the Bahamas. Thanks for sharing another episode.👍👍👍

I would agree in general I do not like being too close to sharks. But the longer I am in the water with them the more I feel comfortable and can start to read some the there body language. For an example a shark will typically lower its front fins and moves up and down the water column when hunting. That's not to say a shark wont get excited and mistake my hand for food but in general it's a mistake and they have little to no interest in us. We really like having the drone and we are trying to blend it so we dont go overboard so thanks for the comment. Ya it was -22c last night here in Canada. Happy holiday's.

I would be exploring all those sunk boats too,that kayaking looked mighty fun too.The reef exploring is always great and I always wonder if I could do that.You are getting really good at spear fishing too.Bet those fresh fish are great!!Thanks for sharing 🙏

We love to explore. So may beautiful things to see and do. Thanks Mark. I guess practice makes better in this case. I did feel like I was really getting in the grove. I miss the fresh fish and can't wait to get back. cheers.

That's the biggest problem. We use to have two but we only kept Cory's because of the lack of space. We're thinking of getting an inflatable paddle board instead. Thanks for watching Norman

@@WildlyIntrepid Just found a totally bad engine mount. Easy fix, but tying to find one may be an issue. Oh, gotta love owning a sailboat. She at times has her own agenda.....

It always has it's own agenda ;) What kind of engine do you have? With Yanmar it was easy to find an order a new one.

@@WildlyIntrepid It's a Yanmar 4jhe. I inquired last week about on with the local dealer. Indication was it's not a normal stock item. Was given a marine transmission shop that may be able to source a comparable part. Yanmar charges $165 each, Yikes...

I think we did pay $125 or something like that 2-3 years ago. Hopefully you find something cheaper. Good luck.

Manjack always has great fish. If you go a little further north to Spanish Cay, you’ll find monster hogs….and sharks lol. Jurassic Park north of Green Turtle. All in all, been going there for 20 years. No better place on earth.

have you guys noticed ciguatera in the bahamas much? what do you avoid and what do you find ok?

Our first year we after we heard about ciguatera we were very nervous and avoided alot of fish on the list. But started to feel super limited on what we could eat. Slowly we started eating snapper and grouper again but not the huge fish. That said I have not hear many stories around the islands. We still stay away from barracuda and some jacks. Our go to fish to spear mostly for taste are hogfish, snapper, grouper, porgy and a few others if we can't find those. Cheers
