ABANDONED 4x4 Honda Civic - Will it Run After 20+ YEARS?? 

I love the classics and antiques, but there's something about an 80's shitbox, that just makes my heart happy.

The rear end in that car is worth more than a lot of other car's you've had on this channel! It's crazy!

That valve set you learned about is Hondas CVCC (Compound Vortex Combustion Chamber), they used that design from the first gen civics in the 70s all the way up to like 89, those motors are "stratified charge" engines, which essentially means that the little mini carb and extra valve set introduce fuel early in the compression stroke to even out the combustion vortexes in the cylinders, and by purposely predetonating a LITTLE bit, they managed to increase that engines thermal efficiency by like 13%. Those engines had an overall efficiency of nearly 83%, allowing them to pass california emissions tests when straight piped. Absolute nightmare to work on when the vacuum systems go, but if everything's in order, well my 83 accord averaged 48mpg city and 59-63mpg highway. It's a SUPER cool system, but its insanely complicated for it's time. Leave it to honda to make the most technologically advanced shit box of all time, and still manage to be one of the most bullet proof engines ever built. I believe the engine code for that design was EK (not to be confused with the EK civic) so if it was a 1.5 liter, 1.6, 1.8, it would be titled as an EK15, EK16, or EK18 motor. Did I mention they're absolute tanks Oh, and that design ONLY works if the engine is reverse flow. As soon as you move the exhaust to the other side of the head, it's no longer a functional system and the predet just blows the motors to shit

These are getting surprisingly hard to find, despite the rust. I can only imagine how much these are going to be worth in restored condition in a few years- obviously this one has seen better days but it's still cool to see yall give it attention. Whatever you do , do not break the rear side windows , they are extremely hard to find and you would be extremely lucky to find anyone who can make them .

Hey if you ever need to remove fluids from a tight spot like that, you can take the head off a spray bottle, stick the straw into the hole, and use the spray head as a pump to remove the fluid. You can pull through a pretty long hose this way too, if you need to.

I had an '84 civic wagon 4x4. Best four wheel drive I've ever had. In 4x4 it had a super low gear. At 5,000 rpm it maybe went 5-7 mph. It was great !

I remember watching this video a year ago, and can now say Im a proud owner one of these wagons! Love it so far.

The trans, transfer case, d/s, and rear diff/subframe all all worth pretty damn good money. You'd have no problem selling them as a group, or sell the whole car. Good chunk of dough sitting there.

really wish more people would do a will it run on various older cars like this. For instance my family has owned two 1987 Subaru gl's and a 86 they were all carbureted and pretty amazing cars. Would love to see people revive and drive stuff like them aside from just the usual muscle cars and old trucks (don't get me wrong I love that as well)

My daughter has a 1990 Honda Civic all wheel drive. 74,000 original miles. Same color combo. 5 speed with a super low. Making it a 6 speed. I've really pushed this thing and it moves. Reminds me of a rally car. Cool little rig.

That would be a perfect donor to make a AWD Civic as thats the differential to use for it and they are hard to come by.

I'm 11 months late for this party, but I had to say that I had a 1984 Toyota Tercel, 4cyl. 5 speed, 4 door hatchback. It had 47,000 miles on it when I bought it. The first thing I did to it was put new spark plugs and wires in it and oil and fuel filter and 10w40 oil. I took my boys to the car show in St. Ignas just over the Mackinac bridge in Michigan. And I got 54 miles to the gallon. I actually only used 3/4 of a tank of gas going up there and back home to Grand Rapids. That little fukker was the best vehicle I ever owned for gas mileage. But one day it decided to blow the head gasket and crack the block between number and 3 cylinder. I don't know why, because it never overheated, but it was blowing oil into the radiator and it just gave up the ghost for no reason. It lasted 3 years and was well worth the $350 I paid for it.

Something I have learned. because my dad works at a Honda's factory. they never die you can literally pull them through the roughest terrain ever beat the living heck out of it. push it through its limits with no change of oil or anything and it would never die. the older the Honda the more stubborn it is until it rust itself to death. it will keep on moving.

When it was first produced in the early 1980s the Civic was actually CVCC, or Controlled Vortex Combustion Chamber, which you found out about. The spark touched off a small pocket of normal fuel/air that then ignited a lean mixture that made up the rest of the chamber. Quite a boost in economy.

My daily driver is a ‘99 CR-V 5 speed manual with the Real Time 4WD, it’s a great car with plenty of sporty for me with the stick and B20, and it’s basically the first evolution of these. Been watching the channel for awhile, keep it up!

I used to have a few of those Wagovans when I worked for an import car recycler. Same deal, AWD and manual transmissions...loved them especially considering I lived in the country in northern Canada and winter roads could be dicey. Even in the 90's those rear pillar glass panels were hard to come by used as there weren't a lot of these vehicles sold.

This takes me back! I owned an '87, sky blue just like that one for years back in the early 2000's. Mine was "Real Time 4WD" which was basically AWD, it didn't have a button. It was ugly, it topped out at about 80mph, and it cornered with all the grace and agility of a drunk Rhino, but it had a 5spd, it only cost me $500, it was as good as any Subaru in snow, and it ran like a tank! Never once left me on the side of the road. In the end it was rust that killed the beast. I put it in for inspection and found out the entire rear axle was basically hanging on by a thread. The mechanic bought it off me for the motor and trans which he put in another civic that he drove for years afterword. You just can't kill a Honda engine.

My step mom had one of these. They actually came out around 1981 (Sorry, I don't recall the exact year but I was still living at home at the time.). They, or at least hers, had a six speed manual transmission, the sixth gear was actually a granny gear which rarely saw any use. I used to love driving that car.

Funny thing was my brother and I were headed to a friends place last night and saw 3 of these ripping down the highway so funny and awesome to see!

The idea behind the CVCC was the same as the direct injection on newer engines. Stratified charge. Lets it run really lean at part throttle without detonation or high NOx.

These had a much cooler name in Europe/rest of world - Honda Civic Shuttle. This was my first car, push button 4wd, 1.5 12v and all. Wonderful gear change. No power steering. Manual choke. Amazing visibility all round with that glasshouse design. Comfortable, practical, economical. Great to learn to drive in. Fold the seats down in the back and throw in a mattress, you can camp in it. Used to launch a boat straight off the beach in Scotland with one.

My dad had the normal 2WD version of this Civic when I was a little kid, can still remember the box of cassettes he kept under the passenger seat for the stereo, along with the lack of air conditioning (very memorable during Australian summers...). He used to run it on a 50/50 mix of leaded and unleaded fuel.

I had a brand new one. It was a great little car. Went through snow with ease. The manual transmission was fun to drive. Real time AWD. still wish they made them. I’d buy one today.

I work at a Honda dealership and one of the veteran mechanics was telling me that the weak point of the older manual transmissions in the Accord’s and Civic’s are the reverse gear. He informed me that you never put them in reverse when still rolling forward or Vice versa.. Apparently it will break the drive idler gear or a shaft. Used to be a problem area of these transmissions back in the day. Just thought you might like to know.

When I was 18, I went to visit my girlfriend’s family in Iowa. Her cousins and I spent the week riding old Honda motorcycles and driving clapped out Samurais in fields just like in this video. It was a great time. I’ll never forget it. Broke up with her after the trip though. 😂

When this does end up as parts bear in mind those rear diffs are worth a bit to the Honda drag racing crowd. Don't know if that crowd is that big in the US though.

80's and 90's Hondas are the definition of un killable. Had an 97 accord without VTEC. ran on exactly 2 pints of oil. any more and it would leak. Ran great, great mpg, and the 5 speeds are so fun to heel n toe. I'm hoping to find a 1st gen NSX one day. It will be kept stock, and daily driven. I wanna see how high the miles can get and it still run

I had a '92 Accord that I had for years. When you got that carb to idle and it fired it up, the engine noise immediately reminded me of my old clunker. Don't see many of those older Hondas any longer.

The awd system in those things are worth their weight in gold just about these days so I'm sure it was well worth the purchase regardless of the plans for it.

These things were tough.... My father had one, he blew out on a motorway in Belgium. The car was scrap, but still passed its roadworthiness test. I emptied the oil and drove flat out down the hill past Luxembourg airport, but it didn't die. He eventually sold it to a farmer, who eventually killed it with 750000km on the clock.
