This explore I would say is the most interesting adventure iv'e been on to date. I am glad i get to share the experience with everyone because I won't forget it. This abandoned airport closed in 2001 and has sat there ever since. Seven aircraft were left in the corner of the runway abandoned as well. This spot had no graffiti and I believe that I may be one of the only people that have every explored it. I am definitely the first to video the entire experience. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

I do not destroy or vandalize any of the places I explore. I go to video and take pictures because it is what i love to do. I document these places before they are gone. I enjoy researching and learning the history behind the places I go.

As a Greek, to many memories of that airport, that was actually double, same runway, but double terminal, West for internal flights and East, for international flights, you were to the east part You know there is a story little known, some years ago was a Greek pilot that managed to fly safe a big plane under the stall speed and land it there saving more than 300 lives, search it, there is a documentary about this

A most interesting video and then some! Thank you for filming this! It brings back fond memories of my father taking us to Greece each summer when we were kids and teens way back in the 60's and 70's! We flew into this airport many times on Olympic 707's and then 747's! We were on the Olympic Eagle 747 (shown in your video) nonstop from Kennedy Airport, NYC to Athens too! I actually shed a few tears in memory of my dear, kind dad, who was from Greece, and emigrated to the United States back in the 50's and became a doctor. He passed suddenly at the age of 85, two years ago.

This was the old Athens International airport which operated for sixty years and closed in 2001. Olympic Airways operated a total of five 747-200’s. Two were purchased new SX-OAA and SC-OAB (shown) the three others were second hand units from Singapore Airlines. SX-OAA was delivered new in June 1973 and was sold to TWA in April 1985. It has been scrapped. SX-OAB (shown) was delivered new in Dec 1973 and was leased to Aerolineas Argentinas in April 1996, it was returned three months later in July 1996. The 737-200 SX-BCA was delivered new in June 1976 spent it’s entire life in service to Olympic Airways. The 727-200 SX-CBA was delivered new in December 1968 and spent its entire life in service to Olympic Airways.

You won't believe how much we fought to save these aviation treasures from selling them for scrap metal. What you see it's what is left/managed to be saved... Unfortunately we couldn't save the first 727-200 adv Boeing constructed from that fate. For more than ten years, we struggle with the aircrafts left and other material (ground handling equipment, vehicles, documents etc) to create a civil aviation/Olympic Airways museum in order to preserve Greek aviation history with no success so far for reasons that no one can understand... Very cool video! Woke up many memories..! We have spent zillion hours planespotting there...

Cool. New York is JFK, right? This plane actually had a minor accident in the 80s while landing in JFK I believe. It was bad visibility and the landing gear clipped something. I mean, INCREDIBLE. Getting into the 727 was AWESOME. And then the old Hellinikom Airport!! The main departures hall! When you went down the stairs, to the right was a huge departures board. Also, there were two airports, one for international carriers and the other was just for Olympic Airways. It also goes to show that Greece's weather is similar to the desert graveyards in N Mex and Ariz. Thanks for sharing.

I watch this videos only to get so sad. But at the same time I love such places. I cannot fully process how a place that 20 years (a blink of an eye) ago was booming with people is now empty and decaying.

I still miss these Boeing 727s. Granted, they're very loud in full-power takeoff mode but, unlike today's aircraft, these old silver birds had character.

Excellent video !!! Too bad Olympic went belly up, Aristotle Onassis is probably turning in his grave over this! This airline was his pride and joy and if he had known what would have become of his endeavor after turning it over to the Greek Government he would never have done it. The problem was that the greedy civil service sector of Greece ruined it.

At 10:10 if i remember correct was the state VIP. 10:30 passport control and stairs to arrivals hall. 11:23 the main transit hall before the gates. I worked at this airport from 1995 till 2001. Then it closed and we moved to the current one (El Venizelos). This video brings me so many nice memories. Thank you!!!

Just awesome! I'm so jealous, love love abandoned things and planes so this is the perfect combo. Just FYI: that 747-200 that doesn't look that new or that old was actually built in 1973 for Olympic so pretty old! Also, you don't need to climb the wing to access a 747 as just behind the nose landing gear is a hatch with a sketchy ladder to climb up. Of course, depends if it's locked, but my guess is open!

This was interesting, thank you for sharing! I'm still watching, I always loved the design of the Boeing 727-200 & seeing inside the cabin looks like this was built before actual overhead bins were installed. Was hoping to see ticket counters if any were left.

Super cool to hear everyone's stories and memory of her. She's a beauty. In the summer of '88 while this jet approaching JFK, there was actually a minor accident. The aircraft was on short ILS final approach, with the first officer at the controls, when it entered a rain shower. All forward visibility was lost, according to the pilots. The captain then took control of the airplane and performed a go around maneuver. Prior to the go-around, the aircraft touched down and one main landing gear truck struck an approach lighting junction box. At least one main gear tire was blown at that time. The aircraft landed safely and the crew was unaware that they had touched down short and to the right of the overrun. Several components on the underside of the aircraft were damaged by tire fragments. Weather conditions at the time included gusty winds and a slight wind shear. I think it was used up until the mid to late 90s when it was sold or leased to another company for four months. Then they returned it and I believe it's sat since. So sad. Thanks for sharing, very cool video
