A few months ago we went to visit the incredible abandoned city called Slab City. It used to be a military base but hundreds of squatters came and made it their home. We went with our friend Justin Escalona and truly had a fascinating experience. We thought the place would be hostile and dangerous when in fact it was inviting and beautiful (in it's own way). Who are we?
Yes Theory are four friends from four different countries who constantly seek discomfort in order to grow. Ammar, Thomas, Matt and Derin met in Montreal, Canada in the summer of 2015 and bonded over their shared desire to live a life that challenged and excited them. IT IS A DANGEROUS PLACE. This video is extremely bias. Try actually going there. You'd be lucky not to be the victim of a robbery, an arson or worse. I spent just a month there and I was done.

When I went there a dude stabbed himself and his guts were falling out and a helicopter came flying around with a spotlight (it was night time) and the dude didn't want to be found and they left. Idk what ever happened to him. I stayed there for 2 weeks

I've been there 4 or 5 times. The last couple times after Mr. Leonard Knight passed away. It was an honor meeting him and having a short conversation. Also, the locals I've met in Slab City have all been welcoming and nice. A must visit for anyone.

My story of Leonard and salvation mountain. My wife and I visited in the late nineties out of curiosity. There were very few people that day, so we had Leonard pretty much to ourselves. After taking the tour, I asked him were he stayed. He then pointed to an old jeep wagoneer and stated that he couldn't get the rear door to shut. I asked him if I could take a look at it. He said please. I explained that I may be able to fix it as I had been a repairman on the assembly line at the Toledo plant. I asked him to get me a screwdriver and hammer. It seen his striker plate had slipped out of place. I adjusted the plate and the door closed as if it had just rolled of the final inspection line. He thanked me and said " God sent you to me this day" !

they only saw/experienced the touristy side of the slab. there's a lot more to it that isn't as peaches and cream. People are always burning each other out for example. (setting camps on fire). I could go on, but I'll leave it at that...

still a pretty scary place to be, especially if you are a female.. I wouldn't be surprised if the women who choose to stay there are regularly sexually assaulted. Just because you see happiness occur during the daytime and the touristy side of the town, don't forget there's other parts of this town, and I'd hate to see what happens in the evening or in the drug areas. Unfortunately this video didn't interview any of the women and didn't ask anyone about crimes they've witnessed or if they have been a victim of a crime, as I'm sure they'd talk about regular assaults, robberies, sexual assaults, rape, etc. With no telephones, police, medical services, etc... if you are raped, injured, assaulted, robbed, or murdered, then you better be OK with that because there's nothing you can do about it because you are on your own. No police or ambulance will come for you. So you better be able to defend yourself and/or willing to kill or be killed.

lol wow I wasn't expecting this many people to reply to this. I don't think its so black and white. It's nuanced. There is good and bad everywhere. Yes Theory just usually focuses on positive things, so that's reflected in the video. But you're right it is good to acknowledge both sides. Something tells me Raven didn't mean to erase male sexual assault victims. They do exist and deserve as much sympathy as female victims, but I think people focus on women because it is much more rampant and visible in society due to various reasons. it's an easy mistake to make.

The government just calls him insane because he believes in God. The even say I'm not even allowed to see my mom because someone called an said I was trying to force her to repent so she won't go to hell. Which wasn't false... But I'm not gonna murder her over wanting to protect my mother. But they thought I was some religious nut job because they listen to Satan an don't do research on if God is real. I did almost 10 years of studying to find God! There is codes in our d.n.a. so we are Designed by a intelligent being. An I've had in counters with God by others praying over me an I even fell back one time an I felt so good, pure joy an peace. Like I was in heaven. I love God's spirit so much! It's all we need for all of our souls needs. Start reading God's word. It's life to yr soul an body. An it brings life when you do gods word. God saids to be love in all yr actions basically. So u just think threw God's word with every action.

I've been been to Slab city and stayed a few nights. There's definitely laws. It's a little bit more relaxed than the rest of the country if you're in your own little backyard because there's no designated police force specifically for the area, however, the sheriff usually does a drive through at least once a day. And as far as the junkies at night, you're fine if you stay in your own space and keep to yourself. Place isn't as bad as some people (who've never even been there) make it out to be.

Last year I visited Salton Sea, Salvation Mountain, Slab city and their library not knowing is was a lawless city. I had an incredible time with my friends and the art was beautiful, beyond anything I have ever seen. I definitely recommend visiting their library btw, to who ever is reading this, you will not regret it!

This place is just under a 2 hour drive from my house and my ex-girlfriend grew up there so we'd travel out a couple times a month to visit her old family and friends. The place truly is awesome. On a couple of our drives down there we found traders and we would trade some of our possessions for theirs (they didn't accept money). These trades often included something of emotional value or earth value, definitely a great experience.

I was in eastern Europe after the fall of Communism where the police was so corrupt that they basically didn't exist and everyone knew it. During the fall and for some time afterwords lack of jobs and other opportunities made petty theft, drinking and drugs rampant. People were so poor that drug-houses (more like apartments where fake synthetic drug mixes were sold) used one needle to fix hundreds of drug-users. Yet there were still laws, a least as enforced by the elderly women of the different communities. If kids, say, were caught drinking they'd suffer the wrath of these angry women. I've seen elderly women chase a drunk out of a neighborhood with broomsticks. If a guy was caught stealing, these women would get their sons and more-sober male neighbors or spouses to retain the thief as they marched to the police station to arouse the police into action. In the end, even the police did what they had to do to avoid the relentless wrath of these women when angered. ... Well this is what I've seen

There is a small town in Tennessee called Iron City. They have tried to establish a police force on two occasions and both times the police car was stolen and flipped upside down in the Shoals Creek. People there take care of themselves and each other and have made it clear that they do not want a police force.
