It’s the Crook Point Bascule Bridge, an icon of the state, a piece of abandoned history right in Providence, the state capital. It’s a beautiful symbol of urban decay, and it’s been like this since 1976. Everyone has seen it, but not everyone knows why it’s like this, or that it leads to a mile long abandoned tunnel through the city’s east side.

The Crook Point Bascule Bridge can be seen from a major highway, and us Rhode Islanders love it (most of us anyway). It’s been put on t shirts, socks, art prints, you name it…and it’s as much a part of the skyline here as the buildings. That’s saying a lot, because providence has gorgeous architecture, each building telling a story about the city’s rich history.
Let’s jump into its history and find out exactly why it’s here and what happened to it. Union Station is in the center of Providence. Today it’s composed of restaurants, storefronts and offices, but in the early 1900s Union Station was a commerce hub. Railroads branched out from here to Connecticut, New York, and further south. In 1906 the city began construction on two new lines from Union Station that would link with a few other regional lines.
Part of the construction involved a 5000 foot tunnel through the city’s east side. Passenger service on this line was short-lived and discontinued in 1937. From then until 1981 the tunnel and line was used only for freight traffic. After 1981, with freight transport dwindling, then line was shut down. In 1983, The trestles leading to the tunnel’s western entrance in the city were demolished to clear up space in the city. With the trestles gone, that left a wide open tunnel through the city’s east side, easily accessible for anyone to walk into.
The abandoned tunnel remained open to walk through for ten years…until 1993, when a RISD party in the tunnel forced city officials to seal off the tunnel with thick corrugated steel. The party was disbursed, and officers claimed they discovered satanic rituals happening in the tunnel. From that point on, the tunnels were sealed up, pierced at each end only by a locked door. And that’s exactly how they remain today.
Leading away from the abandoned tunnel, about 100 yards east, is the crook point bascule bridge, measuring 850 feet across the Seekonk River. With train transport dwindling along this line, Keeping the Crook Point Bridge running up and down was costly, and the reduced train use couldn’t make it pay off. So it was abandoned around the time the tunnel was shut down, left in its up position so boats could still pass through easily.
I have a lot of fun researching, exploring, and filming these places - thank you for watching and supporting me.

Hey I just wanted to thank everyone for all the support here. Whether you're from Rhode Island or somewhere far away like Massachusetts it's cool that we all share this interest in historic abandoned places. I have fun working on these videos and I'm glad you're enjoying them. It's important that we preserve their history, and for those of us that explore them, to always treat them with respect. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go drink some coffee milk.

I think I've seen that bridge when I was kid my moms sister lived in RI. A lot of stuff went to the way side when Conrail was formed in April 1 of 1976. I could probably get you more information on that line along with the average car count, number of industries served that helped decide to abandon direct from the case study in 1974 / 1975. All I need to know is what division it fell under when Conrail took over.

I grew up in East Providence, born in ‘75, so you can imagine how this thing is one of my earliest memories when out and about. I’m slightly obsessed with it and have spent countless hours photographing the bridge from every angle. I recently left RI and got back into photography via DJI. I can’t wait to get back to RI for a visit. My first stop with the drone will be this spot. I was actually putting together a project similar to this, with the history and such, but my god this was amazing to watch. Seeing the bridge from all the different angles and aspects is amazing. Your video and editing are top notch. I’m so glad I came upon this video. It made my day. I subscribed, can’t wait to see more. Kudos!

I can tell you: I can't remember when it was I want to guess the mid 90's. there was a massive underage party in the tunnel. they had a pro-sound-system, the noise DID enter into the near by houses. The cops came into the tunnel and they were surrounded by a 100 kids and left the tunnel. a cruiser was left behind and firebombed. That is when they sealed up both sides of the tunnel with a steal wall.

Going inside that tunnel was surreal. The moment you go inside, you feel the temperature drop a good 20-30 degrees, and the darkness is overwhelming like you said. I brought tactical flashlights and really could not see much. I went in the middle of the summer and there was so much water on there, an entire plastic chair was upright completely underwater. I've seen other videos of people getting through to the other end, and those secret passages from houses, seem to only have been a rumor.

2003-2004 the bridge side was open, or at least unlocked. We had a few parties there back then, it was always the same day as the feast at fox point. That kept the police busy so they ignored us. As a photography student at the time I have a lot of great shots of the entrance back then.

In the late 70s we decided to walk thru the tunnel. Got about 1/4 the way thru and it was way to yucky and creepy for us. We left very quickly. I remember the riots very well. Loved living in Providence from 1972 to 1989. The East side is gorgeous area.

A bunch of friends and myself (in the early 80's) ventured into the tunnel from the North Main St./Steeple St. entrance. If you look closely at the green wall @1:49 you see a door above the white car. You can barely see the large lock right in the center of the cars hood. At the time it was only a plywood wall and door. The only thing in that tunnel was garbage, train track, storm drains. and man hole covers with one cover missing. a pall of in fell in with one leg. As at times there was 0% light and we only had 2 small disposable flashlights that was sold at the time at the checkout of most stores. There was a strange purple and sometime green fog in it also. It came out down from Gano St. We took the bus back.

I used to always take the bus from Rumford to Providence and those buses went through another tunnel that went under the big college hill. A few days after the blizzard of 78 me and one of the waitresses from my Dad's restaurant walked through that tunnel. Now that was cool.

Whoever says there’s no need to reactivate the line has clearly never crossed the I-195 bridge at rush hour. Personally I think it would make a phenomenal route for commuter/light rail between downtown, Brown and East Providence. They could even lay tracks alongside the East Bay bike path and run trains all the way down to Bristol.

Jason! As a native Rhode Islander who moved to the West Coast in 1987 I can recall seeing this upright from I-195 when we’d go to that megaplex cinema complex in Seekonk. You did an amazing job in this and the tunnel detail was fascinating lore I had no idea about. And what about those crazed RISD mobs! 😂 That was my favorite TIL moment for me from your very entertaining slice of history from the state I was born in and you gave it a positive spin with an obvious love of where you come from and that did not exist when I graduated high school in 1979 from Woonsocket HS. Not much appreciation of the fascinating history of the state and the localities. Thanks for loving where you are from, it’s really impressive.

Great video. Sadly, it's (the bridge) a place where many lives have been lost from death by suicide. You could also accidently fall to your death due to its crumbling decaying wood and disrepair. It's very sad to see these historical icons of our past allowed to be laid to waste. I recently found out that many Irish Immigrants including my gr gr grandfather carved out and built the tunnel. Then they would go to St. Joseph's Church on Hope St. to build that after working on the tunnel. Still putting dates together but the opening in 1908 (shown in a shot) coincides with the late 1800 build of St. Joseph's. I wonder how long it took to build the tunnel ? Fantastic video and beautiful shots. Maybe a follow up exploring the creation of the tunnel and the folks who built it ? Happy Holidays to everyone, stay safe and healthy !

great tracking shots, thanks for this Jason, I walked thru the tunnel in the 90s and laughed at the VHS clip because I didn't have a flashlight either, am glad there's a re-use group looking at Not having this torn down

Moved here in 2013 and that tunnel was at the end of our street (Amy St.) I've always wondered where that thing went, but was too lazy to look it up. Thank you for the info and inspiration...

Wow, this videos was amazingly well-done. The animations were incredible, and the history and route explanations came up exactly as I was wondering about them! And you even show the inside of the tunnel!! Just discovered your channel, cheers!
