At the 16:00 mark he said it runs the same with a large vacuum leak. That's because it already had a vacuum leak. He figured it out himself and didn't realize it. Good job. You diagnosed before throwing parts at it. Good mechanic. Keep bringing them old vehicles back to life. I enjoy watching you work.

I am very happy the younger generation, like you two guys have learned old engines and cars. Back in the 1960's and 70's I was doing exactly what you guys are doing. It is a great way to stay out of trouble , stay off drugs and get a sense of accomplishment etc.. You are learning as you go and making it work on a shoe string budget. One of my first that I did 51 years ago, was get a straight 8 1938 Buick running. I used parts from two other nearby scrapped Buicks. Probably a 1947 and 1952 Buicks is what they were. I did a few other different scrapped car/McGyver ,, in the field projects also. Rambler's were fun and low cost to revive ! Presently on another youtube channel some Canadian guys are doing two old straight 8's from a non-commecial poor man's junkyard. Thanks for your channel , it encourages me to keep my 1977 Newport running.

After watching this, sounds like a vacuum leak, maybe at the back of the carb. My 65 352 had a warped base. Had to double gasket it. Spray carb clean around the base. See if it speeds up. Took me forever to find my leak. Ran like new when I found it. Good luck!

I was also going to say vacuum leak. They had the carb off so it may be the base gasket is loose. I turn on a propane torch but don't light it. I run it around the carb base and look for the engine to rev slightly. Then I found my leak.

I enjoy doing this kind of stuff too. My suggestion(s) are to double check the points gap. A matchbook cover is about the right thickness or feeler gauges are cheap (.014 in). Set the timing with a timing light 0-6 degrees at idle, see if it goes up when you rev it (if not unstick the advance weights in the distributor) 30-34 degrees at 3,000rpm is in the neighborhood of right. The go back to the carb and fix what I suspect is the major issue, the idle circuit is clogged up. You can pull the idle jets all the way out of the carb baseplate and spray carb cleaner right in there a few times, waiting a few minutes between shots. Screw the jets back in all the way, lightly bottom them out and back the up 2 1/2 turns. If that don’t fix it the carb will have to come back off for a better cleaning. It’s not as big of a job as you may think to just drop the transmission and see what’s up with the clutch. The rusty new throw out bearing may be the fix. If it’s not binding when you spin it in your hand it’s likely useable. The original likely froze up and galled the collar around the input shaft of the trans. It’s probably stuck on there and will need to be hammered off. Clean both of them up with some sandpaper or emery cloth and slap it back together. Good luck, cool old truck!

You might want to check your vacuum advance canister, it may already be making a vacuum leak. In my '84 f150 with the 351w the diaphragm was ruptured and it ran too lean. The Haynes manual for my truck says you tune it by vacuum. Get the engine warmed up, then throw a vacuum gauge on a manifold port and tune one screw for max vacuum, then tune the other screw for max vacuum. It worked well for the holly carb on my engine. When tuned well, it should only take a pump or two of the accelerator, and the choke for about 10 seconds on a warm day. Try slamming all the way down on the accelerator and letting up quick so the mechanical fast idle kicks in so you can play with other parts of the engine while it runs without needing to mess with the accelerator.

Great videos. One thing that woke up my old Ford was taking off the voltage regulator and using fine sandpaper to clean the three contacts inside, also clean the blade connectors for the plug. It was like adding a performance coil on mine. ha. Also, maybe use some carb cleaner to spray round the usual spots while its running, it will surge up in idle if theres a vacuum leak.

Carb is sucking air somewhere, that's why the disconnected vacuum line changed nothing and it won't idle without the choke on (needs extra fuel to compensate for that air). Just found the series, I'm hooked! Did the same thing back in the day with an old Chevy truck in the woods. Friend and I went as far as taking turns walking a battery all the way there after giving it a tune up but never got further than a fireball out the carb :)

I’m an old school retired mechanic. I freed clutches by putting my heel on the floor-toe one the pedal-press to the floor and quickly turn shoe left until pedal slams against the upper stop. Do several times - check to see if it’s free. Works better if the engine is running.

Someone posted that finding a vacuum leak would be just fine with carb cleaner or brake cleaner. It does a great job of that. All i'm saying is that if you have a freshly painted, restored, engine then you can use the propane torch, unlit, to find a leak without ruining your new paint job. It saves a show car engine. Keep at it guys. I love the videos.

check your air-idle mixture screws. Turn up the throttle screw to 1000 rpm, back off the Idle Mixture screws until you hear a difference. Try opening the choke and if it runs then adjust the idle mixture screws back in by 1/2 turns until it starts to die, then back out 1/4 turn. Check for vacuum leaks

If I remember right, those chokes are attached to a spring that is housed on the top manifold. As the engine warms, the spring expands and opens the choke. The choke should be shut when the engine is first started. That is what keeps the engine running until it warms.

You've probably already did this by now, but you should go through the carburetor to clean out the idle circuit in it, especially after attempting to start it while the bad gas from the tank was being introduced into the bowl, and it won't hurt to clean the mixture jets too. It is running too lean, which accounts for the hard idle control problem. Good luck with this project. My favorite body style Ford Pick Up from back then. They were rugged.

@MFKR696
@MFKR696 5 лет назад
If it's not running without the choke engaged, my first thought would be to check the fuel lines, filters and pump. It's obviously got spark, and it's got air, which leaves only fuel as an issue. If it runs fine with reduced air-flow, but not with normal air-flow, it means it's not getting enough fuel. Even if you drained the tank before you started anything else, there would still be lots of sludgy junk and rust in the tank that would clog a filter quite quickly.

So fun! I found a 1957 Chrysler Saratoga in the High Desert of Northern Nevada, like you I wanted to find out when she was parked. I estimated March of 1993. Her 354 is apart I bought a 69 383 but having a hell of a time finding a bellhousing so I can still use the push button Auto known as a Torqueflight. I can't wait to hear my baby purr it won't be long! You want satisfaction? Build something old and make it go again. Built not Bought brings a sense of pride!

Set the dwell on the points and timing, put the thermostat back in, bring it up to temp and the rings will loosen up over time and will run better hot than cold. Put it back the way it was and it will run better the longer it runs.

Those old 352 fe v8 will run hard if you want them to. A 4 barrel , cam , headers and ignition upgrade really wakes them up. I have a 66 short box with a 352 fe I added a 4 barrel with a edelbrock streetmaster intake, headers and my fave fe cam the comp 268 h. Converted distributor to duraspark , added MSD 6al ignition box , recurved distributor and she flat boogies. It is probably close to 275 - 280 hp now which isnt bad for that old pickup. She will smoke'm just breathing on the go pedal

Runs/drives like a champ, but to tune and time and for tips, it would be badass to have the help of someone like yourself

Pretty cool video series so far. Even after changing the plug wires, you can actually see some arcing and sparking on the distributor cap, so add that to the list of parts the need replaced.

I know its an old video but i didn't see it mentioned, did any of you happen to look at the distributor while diagnosing the idle\timing issue? For those that didn't notice this truck uses vacuum advance timing. This is how vacuum advance works. At part throttle, high manifold vacuum moves the diaphragm in the vacuum advance canister on the distributor to add more timing. But at WOT, the vacuum drops to near zero and vacuum advance is removed and the total timing then is established by the initial plus the mechanical advance. so yes your assessment of the vacuum leak is correct The line that he shows snapped at the carburetor goes directly to the vacuum advance canister

Hey man you gotta put the air cleaner back on to get it to run with no choke. You dont have enough resistence on the intake side so air is dumping in and leaning out the mixture the motor aint getting enough fule witch is why its running rough and wont idle.
