Abandoned Kmart - Barberton, OH 

Wow, seeing all the lights on inside was interesting to see, and that's a HUGE sign for the building and the store looks super wide

I thought so, this store is a older store updated in the 90s. I noticed the older style fluorescent lights and the big round air vents, both were done away in the late 80s style buildings. So I looked it up and the store opened in 1980 and it was expanded in the 90s. My home town store in Jenison was also a 1980 and I suspect this one was very similar. Those frosted windows in that smaller section of the prison yard was the original Garden shop when the store was built. interesting how they expanded it into a much larger area. The rear still looks like the 80s original set up.

I lived in Barberton when I was a kid. I remember looking at the Legos every time we went there in the '90s. I wish I could go back in time and see them stocked with all that cool '90s stuff again.

I’ve recently visited Ohio to see family there is a big lots and a Marc’s inside of that building now.

I personally love this design of Kmarts, with the Super K designs. Sad this one has closed.. thank you Eddie.

Aww it's sad that it's closed. My mom used to shop at this store and Wooster Kmart. I have good memories of being there when I was a kid in the 90s.

It's so weird to see this. I used to work there like 5 years ago. So surreal seeing it completely empty.

I live near there. Just want to add that they had a huge sale right before they closed. They sold every fixture, clothing rack, mirror, etc. All of the lights are on to prevent vandalism (a problem in the area). The city has learned that if lights stay on, people don't tend to mess with things as much. That fenced in area was all a huge garden. Christmas trees for sale in the winter. It's been all cleaned up and Marc's is moving in soon, 2022.

Its cool that the sign on the front of the store that says “Big Kmart” is still on

I worked here for the last 5 years they were open. The front doors were replace a year prior to closing because the old doors were notorious for closing on people and there was a lawsuit because of them. The garden lights were off because they are not part of the lights timer, they are on a seperate switch we had to turn off every night and on every morning. The back room actually has a 2nd floor loft throughout most of it. The pharmacy sign was taken down 2 years prior when the pharmacy closed down

Last we heard there are a little more then 30 Kmart locations left in the U.S.

They just closed last year,was at the clearance sale, everything went pretty quick

Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming no longer have any Kmarts. Only 50 remain in the United States, and only 39 in the continental United States.

Seeing that reference you made about good old 'Eddie Fartfurt' (as Manny Quacioua refers to him) just cracked me up. I'm still mad at him to this day for shutting down our Kmart in Wooster (not far from Barberton).

I worked in that store as a stockboy in the early 80's before the front was moved to be even with the rest of the shopping center.

I been in side when they were open it was nice I wish Kmart didn't close down it was a good store when I was growing up. I going to miss it . Now the are put marces in there now so the big Kmart sign is coming down 😭😭😭😭I wish that they can keep it up but I going miss you Kmart what a great store thanks you wallie for doing the video on it I love your videos.

Shopped at that K mart when I lived in Barberton, was my daughter's first job in 2015.

That building is in good shape, I hope something else will go in there! One of our local KMarts was refurbished and a Hobby Lobby opened in that space!

Did you know Eddie lampert was kidnapped in 2003 in a parking lot outside his office but he persuaded his captors to let him go after 2 days of captivity and he promised to never close another K-mart. That’s why he was kidnapped.

Hi Wallie, great video! This Kmart opened on 8/11/80 as a mid-sized 7-3 store layout. They put a 28K sq ft front addition on in the early 90's. This is why it's so deep but not very wide. The original 80's garden shop is in the back with the frosted windows.

A lot of the Kmarts around me have already been replaced. All my supercenters in fact have already been partially replaced or fully replaced... Good that they don't sit vacant but sucks because most of them went mostly undocumented!

This was my local Kmart, I was here on the last day, and I really miss the store, but I’m happy it’s turning into a Marc’s, I also remember that my checkout light was the very last want to be taken down, it was number 4, And it now says in my bedroom with all of my other retail goodies. This store was actually originally a Zayre, and it opened on August 8, 1980, And closed on December 15, 2019

In my Rocky Horror days in Barberton I used to go to that KMart - it was honestly a dump. At that's before they started closing up shop. Empty shelves, filthy aisles.

If this one closed in Dec 2019 the building could still be under lease by SHC/ Formco. Plus not to mention the lights are most likely on a timer which are still set to the store operating hours and the over ride switch was not thrown to turn them off except for the security night lights. I was so glad they closed. I knew it had to be A matter of time. They were using early 90s computers at checkout. They never had the store stocked properly. What they do have was second rate and overpriced. I live down the road but rarely went there for anything. Hopefully A walmart or something useful will move in.

I'm a Wallie B fan, been texting the channel and reaching out to the guy... I told him about the kmart. I know how it is inside the place. I knew rolling acres, etc. But this guy never reaches out or replies. I would have got him more spots plus SOME BEER. I'm TB Lightning fan so maybe that's why.

I shopped at a K Mart maybe 10 or 15 times ever. Me, or someone in line in front of me, always had a “price check” call which held up my line. 100% of the time!

If ever really wanted to get in, on the sides of the automatic doors are what they call breakaway doors just pull them towards you and they open right up. The alarms will go off but you can get in. How do I know this if you ever forget your store keys to open up in the morning and you had 8 to 10 employees waiting to get in and you didn't want to drive back home to get your keys that was a quick way to get in.

The Kmart by my house has been out of business for years like almost a decade and I swear you if not all the lights are on the majority of them are still on all the time at times it's been home to a Halloween store but that's only during Halloween time so for the rest of the year the lights remain on all the time for no reason

The Des Plaines Kmart is abandoned. I believe it is to be demolished. Maybe not anytime soon, due to the economy.

Would someone in OUR AUDIENCE update me on the NEW KMART COUNT? Last one was at like 43 (32 in Continental US + 6 in PR + 4 in VI and 1 in GU) not counting the ones in CLOSING PHASE. My hometown's (#7788) is one of the 6 in PR remaining, but with almost no new stock during the Pandemic Recession, looks "half empty".... PS: Had to review the amount (the number from Wikipedia included the Island locations).

Just played the bowling game on facebook wallie i played my first game ever every time i went every time i didn't get a strike i got a spare. also can't believe Kmart ain't doing good the one in Edwardsville pa won't be lasted that much longer 1% the company could be saved also you know what else is dumb if Eddie could had Bought a company that was doing good in 2003 like Target Kmart would be saved if they did that instead of buying Sears in 2004.
