We have HUGE NEWS! Click here: bit.ly/tangentswithtylerandtodd for our BRAND NEW WEEKLY SHOW, Tangents with Tyler and Todd, airing EVERY Wednesday!
Out of everything we've built in the last year on our homestead this is one that will provide us the greatest security for our future. We've been on a mission to build a fully sustainable, off the grid homestead...a homestead that meets all of our needs from food security to water to even generating our own electricity.
When we first set out on building our cabin, we had planned on doing a traditional a-frame style cottage but as time went on and we did our homework we realized that if we carefully planned things we could build a cabin that won't just last our lifetime but generations to come. The more we learned about what it truly means to live off grid and be self-sufficient, we quickly realized the importance of building a homestead...for those of you who don't know (because we definitely didn't), a homestead is a property with several outbuildings that all provide a separate purpose for the goal self sufficiency! We knew from the beginning that we wanted the independence that having a homestead gave us but weren't interested in roughing it off the grid like a typical log cabin you're used to seeing! So we dreamt up a modern twist on cabin life that will fit our needs and after all these days dreaming, it's FINALLY happening and we can't wait to bring you along for the ride! #homestead #offgrid #vanlife
Join us every Sunday as we continue to create off the grid homestead vlogs, sharing our adventures as we build our own alternative lifestyle, living simply in the wild wonderful off grid forest!
For the raw and unfiltered every day moments, join us over on Patreon!

How did we get here?
After a year of full time travel living the van life, we had to adapt when the world changed. To keep busy we’ve converted our tiny house on wheels into a fully functioning off grid tiny house that has everything we need. Realizing that none of us know how long this new normal will stick around, we made the decision that building a home here was the best decision we could make. We've spent the last year doing EVERYTHING involved with coordinating and planning the build ourselves as well as setting up this off grid property to be able to provide us with the the food we'll need in the future.

An incredible amount of work over such a short period of time but we're so glad we buckled down and got it done. Everyone who has stopped by for a visit over the last few days is leaving with a handfuls of green onion, which is such a great feeling to be able to share this...can't wait for a few months when we're bursting at the seams with produce PLUS all the amazing things we'll be able to preserve. Who knows, maybe we'll have enough to launch fruits by fruits 😅 P.S Make sure you let us know if you have any good names for the Kubota RTV lol

@@tylerandtodd life-long Nebraska farm brat, here. I'd add one bit of advice to Elaine's excellent suggestion. Do your watering nearer to sundown. You said a couple of times that it's hot up there now. Watering outside of the full heat and sun exposure will ensure more of it is absorbed instead of evaporating. Another advantage of Elaine's drip idea is less erosion. After all that back-breaking work to create the built up rows, drip irrigation will keep them viable longer. Your sore muscles have my sympathies - I spent the first 20 years of my life beside my grandmother in the weeds. Let me tell you, that woman didn't garden - she FARMED! Grandpa would back in the tractor with an 8 ft. rototiller on 3-point PTO and spend a couple of hours turning Nebraska gumbo into soft, cultivated soil. Between gardens and orchards we had just short of 5 acres under the hoe. Then harvesting would begin, and we never got out of the canning kitchen for the next 3 months. I hope your garden is as wonderful and bountiful as what Gram and I had!

I'm in Michigan, so similar growing season. I'd put the call out on your local facebook group to see if anyone has any plants in their garden that they need to thin out. It's so late for you to plant squash or pumpkins, but if other people in your area are like me, they planted too much, too close together and now their garden is overrun. I'd be happy to give away some already pretty mature plants to give everything more room.

Your 8 day results blew me away. I too was thinking you're planting too late. Your potatoes blew me away. If you haven't done it yet, research your potato harvest. I know here in Ariz with our temperate falls and winters potatoes can stay in the ground for a longer period of time (Oct/Nov). Don't know if you can do that with your early frost temps. Maybe if they're mulched really well. Hopefully someone will chime in here.

Oh my gosh, “Fruits by Fruits”,🤣😂🤣. Todd you get me every time! Tyler, life with Todd can never be boring! Maybe use a play on words and call your fruit stand “Fruits buy Fruits”😁. The garden is absolutely amazing! A lot of work, but like you said with the price of food now a days, it will all be worth it and you know it’s 100% naturally grown with no pesticides! Watching Charlie and Eddie playing so care free and happy in the river was everything! Animals have a way of teaching us to “stop and smell the roses” once and a while. We humans tend to get lost in the chaos of “life” that we miss out on actually living that life! You two seem to have found a good balance and are building/living life on your own terms and I find that refreshing! Take care! Much love and big hugs!

You will really appreciate having all the fruits and veggies at your fingertips this winter! We expanded our garden in 2020 due to Covid and it’s so nice knowing I can feed my family and give to neighbors and friends. Something you might wanna check into for easier gardening…research the no dig method. We tried it this past year for the first time and it’s made a huge difference in the size of my veggies! Not sure if it would work in your climate but might be worth investigating. It’s so much easier and less time consuming! Good luck to you guys in all you do!!! If there is elevation change, you could do run-off irrigation (parallel trench at the bottom of the panels with perpendicular run-off trenches going to all of the rows), or instead, put a gutter along the bottom of the panels that runs off into a buried cistern (not deep, just opening at ground level) that you could put your 12V pump into to power a standard drip irrigation system...with timer of course :) Watching the two of your accomplish all of this together gives me warm fuzzies. A couple of suggestions for the Kaboda: Carrie or Tillie. Yes, you’ll pick stones every year before planting. They multiply and shift upwards when soil is loosened. Love you guys.

You two are doing an amazing job with this huge project. I look forward each week to see what’s next. This week was fun for me because I love gardening so much. One little bit of advice as far as garlic goes, you should always plant hard neck in your area but plant it in October to overwinter. It will be one of the 1st things you see pop up in spring and it will be ready by July. You may already know this but an added bonus to growing hard neck garlic is the edible scapes that shoot up in June. Cut them off and enjoy them in stir fry or any way you use scallions. I think you are way too late for success starting in summer. Fingers crossed for good results but it’s still edible at any size. Good luck!

I recall on the Greenachre homestead, another RU-vid vlog, they had a garden and were growing similar to you , they laid out long lengths of pipe throughout their furrows and attached it to an outside tap , that had a timer on it and it watered the plants when needed with out having to water them like you have done with a watering can.

When my husband and I were first married, we planted a small garden in our yard. We were very excited when our bean plants started to pop up. They had just come up and had about 2 leaves on them. Before they even had a chance, we got up one morning to see rows of stems, no leaves. Bunnies had a feast during the night. So disappointing. I hope your garden does well. I really enjoy watching the progress you're making on your home. Thanks for sharing.

Impressive!! It’s so rewarding to be able to grow and harvest food you grew yourselves. All the best with this season’s veggies! Your garden plot set-up lends itself to the porous hose irrigation system. You get the water directly into the soil and plant roots and avoid rot or insect infestation because the plant leaves stay dry.
@arboral
@arboral Год назад
Love the gardening effort. I totally understand the amount of work needed to get your garden to produce. Might I suggest a couple of tips. Drip irrigation will help you with the watering and not overuse water. Once your growing season is over, I would strongly urge you to get a green compost like winter barley once you have harvested. It will grow in the fall and then you can till it back into the ground for extra organic matter. Oh and those potatoes keep mounding dirt around them as they grow so that you can get more yield.
