I grew up in Baldwin myself, and I so remember when this was a LJS. I remember going to eat there just about every weekend with my grandparents because they both loved LJS and every time we would leave I'd ring the bell on the way out!! That building is now home to Dollar General in which I was just in last week. I've never seen shelves so bare, so I don't know what the deal is with that, but the Dollar General on Joseph street has WAY more stuff, and is fully stocked, so I now go to that one since it's the closest one to me from South Side.
I grew up like 5 minutes from this place in Baldwin. Its nice to see that the place hasn't been destroyed yet. This LJS has been there since the 80s. I always recall the place being clean when we went there. I see the neighborhood is cleaned up a bit, Carrick has always been a shady part of pgh.... Btw... My husband and I are enjoying your vids especially. The kmart ones!! Keep up the good work!
I wish Captain D's had some locations in the Chicago area. :( Was really surprised when I was in Saint Louis about 4 years ago, that I ran into several D's locations while down there. Thought they only had a presence in further south areas, such as near Nashville.
My mom worked at a Long John Silvers here in Lancaster, PA, East Town Mall shopping center. She didn't like working there, I forget why she quit. She said if you see the way the workers cook the food, you don't want to be there. But, I loved their hush puppies, cole slaw, fries and fish fillets. Sad, her location closed a long time ago 😢.
I just drove by this location today. The building is gone and the lot is cleared with a fence around it. A banner or sign says it will soon be home to a Dollar General store.
Great video and sad you go to places when you are hungry and they are closed. Have never been to a Long John Silvers. Wonder how they compare to Arthur Treachers which was my fast food fish place growing up in Jersey City? Like to try Long Johns once. Keep those funny videos and commentary coming Wallie B
In my area 1hr 40 mins or so North East of Pittsburgh our Long Johns closed up shop as well. It was only matter of time because they had very few customers and it was right across from the McDonalds as well. It also had the A&W stuff as well. Me and my mom went to McDonalds the one day and I noticed the signage gone and some of the stuff from the inside was all crammed into a dumpster. One day the drive thru closed for good while the restaurant itself was still barley kicking. That Long Johns was there dating back to when I was a kid growing up. I'm 35 now so that location was there for a long time. I am hoping that an Arbys or a Little Caesars opens up there. A rare sight a Long Johns with out the A&W stuff. Sometime I need to check and see if the building that housed Long John's has any papers up about the building being up for lease.
Nice video.. We have Captain D's in our area, and honestly, I'm surprised their still open , although I eat there way more than I should! They have been in Dallas GA since the 70's I think.. lol
Must be a regional thing as to whether or not the are LJS stores. They are doing well in Kentucky. It seems that every small city (5K-20K) has one; some have even been built within the last decade. On the other hand, I know of a handful of Captain D's that have closed up in recent years.
Wow seeing that place is a trip, I lived nearby twice over the years and went in there so many times, it looks exactly the same as it did in 1998 haha.
Why is it that all of the old fried fish places all look alike? Looks like an old Skippers before they shut down in the mid 2000s. They did make a comeback in one strip mall location. Good clam chowder though!!! 😀
It's very surprising that they striped the menu board but left the signage intact, who knows maybe they will strip the signage someday but it's a good thing you getting this on video because maybe someday they will strip the signage.
I grew up in Carrick and still live here. It use to be nice and the people are great. Once the drugs took over the neighborhood turned to shit. And a lot of trash and scumbags from other neighborhoods moved here. It's a shame what happened but that's neither here or there. I would love to put a bar there it would be a perfect spot. But they want way to much money to buy that building or even rent it out. But that's cool you did a lil piece on this. And yes the food there sucked it went down hill right around 98-99. It's was at one point the best fast food around growing up in the 80s.
Long Johns Silver's franchisee from Louisville owned restaurants in OHIO West Virginia , Kentucky, Tennessee Indiana, southwestern PA filed a Chapte11 bankruptcy. The owner just had to file for bankruptcy
My friend went their and she said the exact comment that was said in the complaints . Everything including a the chicken tasted like fish. They should fry the chicken and hush puppies in separate oil.
COOL ..VID WALLIE..I LIKE LONG JOHN'S SILVER!!!!LUV THEIR HUSH PUPPIES..AND COLE SLAW!!!!..FISH SANDWICHES WER PRETTY DAMN GOOD 2!THERE USED 2 B ..A LONG JOHN'S SILVER'S OVER IN PERU IL. BUT THAT'S LONG GONE...I REMEMBER THEY HAD .99c FISH SANDWICHES...LATER DUDE!!
The increase in the cost of seafood. They either have to skimp or raise prices beyond what people will pay. Niether choice is conducive to staying in business. In addition their stores are decades old and they've started knocking down the old buildings. In markets where the business isn't there, they close up. There's also the thing that Wally mentioned about service. Franchised stores of any chain can be all over the map when it comes to quality.
Mister Hat+Hadn't thought it through, but your spot on,Wallie & you.Same thing happened to Arthur Treachers.Have to admit I'm spoiled Lake Erie is our backyard and Euclid fish Co.is only half hour drive away for seafood. Thanks for the reply Mr.Hat.👍
