A visit to another cold war nuclear bunker known as a ROC post.
This post open in 1962 but war closed in 1968, its in remarkable condition!
These were monitoring posts and are were over 1500 of these posts across the UK, monitoring for nuclear blasts and fallout radiation in the area.
They were active from 1962 to 1991

Nice one! There is one down near Lizard point in Cornwall that we were going to explore one day, they had a chain on it, but the lid was removable with the chain in place, bit of a fail! lol

Single set of batteries shows that the post would not have had a radio. Only 1 in every 4 had a radio and was called a 'master post'. Also the setup inside shows it closed in 68', posts that closed in 91' had much more modern fittings installed.

Love these ROC finds. I always wonder if there is a sneaky Geocache hidden somewhere near by, it was them that got me going back to the ROC posts around my area again.

Your camouflage jacket Enhances your Orange beard so much it's unbelievable! I know you weren't trying to go un noticed, but if you do find yourself in a position where you need to blend into the background... Tuck that glowing mass of keratin into the jacket.. Or wear a snug fitting Balaclava or a big green skalf

Some bunkers have a timer to let it explode in case of emergency, so Maybe you should not touch it to much.

I'm pretty sure that timer is in place to make sure that the lights where timed so that battery power could be preserved

I would say that timer is for the lights, max duration 60 minutes, to conserve the batteries..

That battery appears to be a Ni-cad battery not a lead acid battery. These are used as emergency power on ships even today.

There is a string of these near where I live, all in different conditions and one is sealed shut rumoured to be in pristine condition with original furnishings, pm me if you want the locations IKS, although since they are the same as this they probably are not worth the drive

Sure ill try to. I believe it has been vandalised unfortunately. This caused it to be concreted shut. But they are still fascinating just seeing the out side of them :D

I and a few of my friends are going to clear out the area because its full of thorns and brambles and then we'll get in to recording it for you :) At the moment we can only see the main hatch but we cant see what i believe to be the ventilation pipe thing coming from the ground due to the thorns. Ill try get a before and after picture as well

These bunkers were dated from 1958 to 91, no grenade would be dropped in these cold war bunkers :) thanks for the comment :)

All those poor bastards, sitting in their insulated holes in the ground, measuring the end of the world. The earliest blast indicators could only be checked by someone going outside to get the photosensitive plate.

I think anyone in one of the bunkers would have just been cannon fodder for a short while, they would not have lived for long as we now know a nuclear bomb would have killed them slowly as well.

They knew that then too, the idea wasn't to survive. The idea was to report the direction, distance and magnitude of any nuclear explosions.

Yeh. Sad reality is, even if the top brass were downstairs, they would have to come up at some point, that wouldn't be much fun...assuming the soviets didn't turn everything into glass. Russia has way more shelters for civilians even now, we got rid of our CD, they upgraded theirs. Comes to something when Russian government care more about its people that our government care about us.

Terry Bowles I had a friends dad who was a member of the ROC & I went along to a couple of their regular exercises in one of these bunkers. Thier "filter" system was laughable and it was clear they were considered completely expendable and would only last a couple of days if lucky. In reality they were simply a form of disposable fall out monitoring !
