As the name tells the difference PLC is a simple control system dedicated to control one package or one unit. However, DCS may control all units and subunits. Moreover, all PLC systems are further connected to a DCS system. To be precise DCS is used for overall plant operation whereas PLC is used for small unit operation/control. PLC is a singular control system whereas DCS is a distributed control system covering all PLC systems as well. There are further details for DCS but to understand the basic distinction this is enough.
