Great reaction video!! Loved to watch it and loved to hear your thoughts. I totally agree with you, they are super talented, versatile and one of the best groups ever 😎✌
I'm old enough to remember Abba being uncool in the UK-during the 70s. I've always liked them but was hesitant to say this to my peers when I was young. My favourite foreign group.
Watched this reaction with a grin on my face from start to finish as I love seeing how people of all ages and backgrounds fall hopelessly in love with ABBA once they start digging into the back catalogue.
I never understood WHY this song wasn't a single!!! It's on my Top 10 ABBA songs ever, incredible song, and incredible album... Thank you for recact to it!!!!!!
@German Morawski RCA Australia were so confident it was going to be a single they gave it a catalogue number. It's asserted that copies were pressed and destroyed when ABBA changed their minds but this has never been verified.
"Thank you for the music ..the songs I am singing, thank you for all the joy ,your bring..who could live without it...I ask in all honesty...what could it be...so I say thank for the music....for bringing ...it to me".....this is for you ABBA.
More sides of ABBA you haven't explored yet: - My Mama Said (1974) [a funky soul ballad, very underrated] - Eagle (6 Minute Album Version) (1977) [has a psychedelic sound. Pick the full 6 min version, not the short music video] - I Let the Music Speak (1981) [a complex musical-type song, with a lovely orchestral arrangement] - Watch Out (1974) [uptempo glam rock, with Björn on vocals] - Hey, Hey Helen (1975) [midtempo glam rock] - The Way Old Friends Do (live) (1980) [a hymn] - I Have a Dream (1979) [lovely children's song with a choir at the end] - Arrival (1976) [Nordic folk, no lyrics] - My Love, My Life (1976) [romantic ballad with layered backing harmonies] - Summer Night City (Full-length Version) (1978) [disco-rock. Pick the 'unreleased' version with the extra intro] - The Name of the Game (1977) [one of their most sophisticated ballads, lots of transitions] - Our Last Summer (1980) [melancholic ballad by Frida]
Abba by the very very wide diversity of their quality production, in the interpretation, the richness of the sound, with a lot of instrument in addition to the voices, vocal backing, arrangements and obviously compositions and themes, leave us a very important legacy in the western pop music. They are, it seems to me because of what they brought to all of this and also to the emotions, a little universal happiness musically. It is striking, from the lightness of the carefree youth, to those most affected by the pains of our lives, sentimental ballads, superficial "jovial", disco, rocks, ispanic song, etc. etc. If there were not the voices of girls, it would be difficult to perceive that it is the same creatord, the same group.
Abba: The Album is an album by itself. In this album, you should also react to a song called 'Move On'- I guarantee you that its another underrated gem of an exquisite song of extreme quality
ABBA was much more influential as most people think. I grew up with them. I saw them perform at the European Song festival that meant their breakthrough. For me, their best song is Eagle.
Love your reactions. This was not their first album, no. Here's a list of their studio albums by year of release: "Ring Ring" (1973) "Waterloo" (1974) "ABBA" (1975) "Arrival" (1976) "The Album" (1977) "Voulez-Vous" (1979) "Super Trouper" (1980) "The Visitors" (1981)
There were 5-7 singles on the album, but they only released 2. Back in the day, it took a long time for singles to make their run on the charts. This could’ve been a pretty big one for them. I heard this, One Man One Woman, and Eagle on the radio in rural Ohio, a place devoid of musical taste in those days.
He really should becouse it's amazing and ABBA just rock that stage on through the the concert. Hole in your soul is such a climax when watching that show, would've loved to been able to seen it all.
This was from ABBA’s fifth album, ABBA-The Album was called that to tie in with ABBA-The Movie, as both were released at same time and they would promote each other. Hole In Your Soul had elements of ‘Get On The Carousel’ in it, that song was performed in their live shows in 1977 tour as part of the mini-musical ‘The Girl With The Golden Hair’. Benny and Bjorn were unhappy with it, so it was left off The Album (footage of Get On The Carousel is on RU-vid.) Hole In Your Soul was scheduled for a single release, especially in Australia, but ‘The Name Of The Game’ was released instead. As other commentators have said, the live version is even rockier, and Is worth a look. Great review, cheers.
ABBA the Movie was released alongside ABBA the album which contained some new tracks featured on the movie for the first time plus their hits ( basically their Australian live concerts ) were launched together ( ABBA The Album contained only new songs )
ABBA are masters of crafting great songs, they never bore, they always invent something new in what they do and it becomes timeless and great....really really good song...:) and you are right, they are very underrated,in fact, they are the greatest songwriters ever been.
It's their fifth studio album released as a partner to the film ABBA The Movie. The global concert tour earlier that year (1977) was precursor for album and movie later that year. ABBA The Concert; ABBA The Movie; ABBA The Album.
Absolute... it's one of my favourite ABBA top 10 songs, should have been a single. So many people have NEVER heard this song ! it's a tragedy that it was never released main stream !
Agree with comments below you must check out the live version as they let rip a bit more its great and so to is Summer Night City. I was lucky to be there at Wembly in 79 and remember it vividly to this day
Great reaction and picking up on the major and minor switch. Also stand out on this track are Agnetha’s high notes. There is a great live version available too.
Nice one. I’d love you to hear Eagle live at Wembley if ever you get a sec. It’s been my fave Abba listen for a while now. Eagle is their Pink Floyd moment (also on this album!) but the Wembley performance gives it more grease and grime. Hope you’re well, cheers!
Yes some say it bevor, but I say it once again: you should be listening to the live version from 1979 Wembley. It`s fabulous. The album versioni s also pretty cool, but this live version shows what they are able to ( without studio add ons).
Björn once mentioned that they thought they had to do Glam Rock in the mid 70s, but had little success. This song must be a remnant of that. It’s amazing.
titled ABBA 'The Album' to go along with ABBA 'The Movie ' 'Ring Ring' 1973, 'Waterloo' 1974 , 'ABBA' 1975 and 'Arrival' 1976, came prior to this 'album'
Greetings Tommy, from Australia 🐨👋😃 'ABBA The Album' was their 5th of their 8 studio albums, released late 1977. Their first was 'Ring Ring' (1973), then 'Waterloo' (1974), 'ABBA' (1975), 'Arrival' (1976), this one, 'Voulez-Vous' (1979), 'Super Trouper' (1980), then 'The Visitors' (1981). At one stage, 'Hole In Your Soul' had the chance of being the first single lifted from the forthcoming 'ABBA The Album' in late 1977 (and ABBA's record label at the time, RCA, campaigned to ABBA that it be so; but, instead, ABBA chose 'Name Of The Game'). Just thinking about it now (after all these decades of being an ABBA fan [since Monday the 8th of March, 1976 😉].), I feel that this song could arguably be a showcase to promote ABBA to newbies of their music, as opposed to the predictable set of hits (that, of course, I also still love 😁), because it shows a spectrum of diversity that *is* ABBA: this is essentially a rock song, that also blends pop/ballad into it, and has various surprises in it, so it's not just a tune. And, as you're discovering through the 'non-mainstream' tunes and songs from ABBA's catalogue, they *are* diverse, and there *are* surprises in their repertoir as well as in many of the individual songs. Each of ABBA were not just musicians, they were crafts-people (Benny & Björn always were open to many constructive suggestions from Frida & Agnetha - as well as the musicians who played with and for them, so they were indeed an ensemble, not just 'puppets' doing what Benny & Björn told all of them to do). Thanks for another great ABBA reaction/review ...always enjoyable. (...by the way, I look forward to hearing the next RU-vid of you singing; you have a great voice). Cheers.
There's more to ABBA than meets the eye (or should I say the ear). Their songs are so well composed and the arrangements are great. I especially like "The Piper". Not one of the famous ABBA songs, it was the B-side of the single "Super trouper".
Great song - great reaction! It´s from their fifth studio album "Abba - The Album" from 1977. If you want to react and listen to yet another side of Abba, try a real gem - and a bit corny as well: My Mama Said from their 1974 and second album Waterloo! It´s very different from other Abba songs! I also look forward for you to react to Eagle, The Name of the Game and I´m a Marionette from Abba - The Album. They are all very complex and not typical Abba! And there are so many more songs tio discover for you - I´ve been an Abba fan since I was 9 years old in 1974 - and I NEVER get tired of listening to them. Just because they are so diverse - and not just Happy go easy! LOVE ABBA!
Mis saludos cordiales desde Buenos Aires Argentina (disculpas por escribir en español) Muy contento que hayas podido hacer tu reacción de esta potente y sorprendente "Hole in your soul" es una perla oculta en el album de culto "The Album" de 1977 Todas las canciones en "The Album" son imperdibles y demuestra su gran versatilidad de géneros musicales Eagle Take a chance on me One man one woman The name of the game Move on Hole in your sole Thank you for the music I wonder I'm a marionette Lo mejor de "Hole in your soul" para mí es la transición y puente melódico estilo gregoriano entre tanta fuerza del rock & roll (aunque no sea igual, la relaciono con "S.O.S." pero al revés) Las chicas llegan a niveles de angeles en sus voces, y nos llevan a un místico Edén, en especial el tono soprano de Agnetha, y luego la salida con un canto casi a capela de los cuatro es de genios, con la música creciendo hasta el final
This is ABBA's 5th studio album - sorry if I'm coming to this late: you probably already worked that out for yourself! Interesting comment about the major / minor switch: to my ear, the same note in both lines of the chorus goes into minor - "be", and "hole"...am I missing something? TBH, I first heard this when it came out in 1978, and I've never noticed it before you pointed it out, so thanks for that - great review, enjoyed hearing your commentary on the song
Hey Tommy from Maine . I tried to read an article on how produces their sound. I quite literally got dizzy from the list of equipment used. They seem simple at first but they are very complicated.
Another great review. I love the way you go into more technical detail. So many RU-vid "Abba reaction" channels give such lame responses. You are consistently fair and thorough 👍
You Should try Hey Hey Helen, that intro.. I don’t think ABBA get rockier than that. I think Rolling Stone magazine ranked it as Abbas 6:th greatest song of all!
Check out the song Watch Out from the album waterloo if you want a seventies sounding rocky song. Love this one when i was a kid and the album came out.
@@ThomasJ_Music You are welcome. Most tubers dont analyze the interesting things, the music. Or dont have the skills.. they just analyse the lyrics only. Which is quite boring..
Nice reaction and I like your open song minded attitude about listening to music from a musical act which you may have had a pre-conceived notion of based limited exposure. As a lifelong ABBA fan (and American to boot!) I thought your comments were spot on and I really enjoyed seeing your musician’s ear focus in during a portion of the song when you were trying to determine major or minor. This is the first reaction vid of yours I’ve seen and I’m looking forward to checking out your reaction to “The Visitors” which is one of my favorite ABBA songs and a good example of what you pointed out in the video regarding the variety of songs which ABBA recorded. If you want to check out more ABBA tracks which are more rock oriented you should check out “Hey Hey Helen” and “So Long”, I think you would be surprised, particularly “Hey, Hey Helen”
I don't think ABBA are underrated as songwriters by anyone over 45 or so. If you were there first time round, you know. But I also think their catalogue is big enough that there's many gems that younger people have just never heard. But I do love seeing younger people react to hearing them for the first time now. ABBA reactions seems to have become a popular sub-genre in the last couple of years!
At the start of their career, Anna, Bjorn, Benny & Annifrid, aka ABBA, were in the same vein as Sweet, Slade and Mud with songs like 'Ring Ring' and of course 'Waterloo': pop-rock with a catchy chorus and a couple of hooks in-between. But still guitar and beat driven.
You are really good. Love your reactions. You like the deep songs and you like the fast songs. Jag hoppas du fortsätter att lyssna och reagera på Abba. 👍🤗 Jag är från Sverige 😍🇸🇪
You make me feel so old with your "I don't know what it was like in the 70's" comment. I grew up during ABBA's active years & remember this album (ABBA - The Album) being No 1 in The UK , It had strong connections to their Australian Tour, notice the little Kangaroo on the album cover. It was a huge album & I believe (someone correct me If I'm wrong) their most successful album in America. ABBA totally dominated the Charts (the UK one anyway) for years, It seemed that they were always No 1 in the charts with something. My personal favourite was "Knowing Me Knowing You". Very happy times indeed, they we're a very gifted group, consumate professionals. BTW .. I still fall into the "Too old to be young but too young to be old" category. LOL
This song always reminds me of «ABBA: The Movie», when it is played at the beginning. ABBA The Album was their highest-charting album here in the U.S. (peaking at a respectable Nº 14). Also,,,,,,, I recommend you see their performance of «Hole In Your Soul», from November of 1979, Live at Wembley Arena. When they played 5 consecutive sold-out concerts, from 6 to 10 November. ⚠⚠⚠Pardon me for correcting you,,,,,but⚠⚠⚠ You said «ABBA: The Album», was a «self-titled», when, actually, ABBA had only 1 «self-titled» album, which was, simply «ABBA», from 1975 (their follow-up album to «Waterloo»), which included the smash hits «Mamma Mia» and «S.O.S.».
I always tell my "non-ABBA" friends the same.... their album songs are often some of their best gems and could've / should've been released as singles as well !
Rather than a major or minor I'd say the chorus has standard "blue" melody elements which technically is neither, which of course follows with this tougher, rockier style.
Hey Ear, Abba released The Album in 1978 - during their Imperial Phase. I would think many bands would have put out Hole in Your Soul as a single, but they chose otherwise. I see you haven't reacted to Eagle or The Name of the Game from the same album. They're both in my personal Abba TOP 5.
You deffinately should listnisen to Hey Hey Helen, it wasn't Waterloo that got me interested in ABBA it was Hey Hey Helen and Tropical Loveland. The harmonies on Hey Hey Helen are so tight and as for rock woof.
