My husband, may he rest in peace, loved this skit! One day I asked the kids whose turn to do dishes and they said,"I don't know." And my husband hollered from the livingroom, "Third base!" I burst out laughing and the kids were confused by all this. There was no Google or RU-vid yet so I couldn't even begin to explain what was so funny. My husband would sometimes say he was on 3rd base and I knew he meant he didn't understand something.

I was watching Martin & Lewis stuff and went down the rabbit hole with Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, The Three Stooges, etc. We sure lost our innocence and sense of humor.

They never had the bit memorized. They would make it shorter or longer to fill whatever time they needed and just played off each other the whole time. That's why they're the best at what they did!

They never memorized the skit. They played off of each other when doing this and could have it go long or short.

I'm way too late on this one, but for anyone interested this isn't true. This bit was completely scripted and performed by a lot of comedians who all did it. When this aired there were 15-20 other well-known comics who were pissed because they couldn't do this routine on their stand up gigs anymore, since everyone had seen it on tv.

@Sam Houston: This was from 1945. They performed it the first time in 1938 on a radio show but they performed it a couple of movies and on stage many times in the 1940's. And this was the shorter version. The original is longer.
