In the televised broadcast, between rounds, Joe Louis -- who forgot more about boxing than Howard knew -- commented that Clay was completely "outclassing" Liston.
John Carmichael deserves to be remembered for being the only press member to correctly predict what would happen. He said “IF the fight lasts more than five rounds, Clay will win.” The response was “wait, you think Clay actually has a chance?” Every other reporter confidently predicted an early victory for Liston.
Wow This was really enjoyable to listen to. Can you post more radio presentations of Muhammad Ali fights particularly from the 1960s. The interviews and commentary before and after the fight was great. Ali vs Floyd Patterson 1965. The second Liston fight 1965. I really enjoy the commentary. The Ali vs Cleveland Williams Thank you for posting.
I got goosebumps when Cosell started freaking out when Liston didn't answer the bell for the 7th. 10 years later Ali did it again against the "unbeatable" Foreman
Howard Cosell interviewing Dick Young??? Never thought I'd hear that. My memory is them not being able to stand each other. But that was after this. I was only 4 when this fight happened.
You are correct. Cosell and Young disliked each other. Cosell was very liberal and despised sportswriters; Young was conservative and thought most TV sports reporters were preeners.
@@swami1 Ironically, the last significant thing I remember about the Young/Cosell relationship is Young defending his Alvin Garrett little monkey comments. Young said whatever else he is, he isn't a racist. Also, Howard was not fond of sportswriters in general He was doing a baseball game where Nolan Ryan lost a no hitter on a questionable call by the official scorer. What ensued was a rant by Cosell on why "members of the fourth estate" should not be serving as official scorers.
@@swami1 Wow ! This is Awesome Thank you for posting. Also I really enjoy the post fight and pre-fight interviews. Can you post more interviews of Muhammad Ali from the 1960s and 70s. Thank you again for posting. I
Howard Cosell clearly knew very little about boxing. At the end of the second round "The first round could have gone either way"? It was totally dominated by Ali. He ducked almost everything Liston threw at him and literally hit Liston at will -- ending the first round with 9 straight jabs. "Give Liston the second round he's punishing Clay"? Not even close to what was going on at that point in the fight. He announced other fights as well where he declared one fighter losing/badly hurt just moments before that fighter knocked out his opponent.
“Wait a minute, wait a minute! Sonny Liston is not coming out! Sonny Liston is not coming out! He’s out! The winner and the new heavyweight champion of the world is Cassius Clay..” Chills 47:13
