Today I taught my middle school girls team this ABC scramble. They picked it up good. We did it in a half court press.

Coach Schakel, I am a two hand shooter, and I need help transferring into the one hand shot. My flick is not strong enough, so can you please make a video of how to make my flick stronger. Also, your shooting videos are really helpful!!!!!!

My league does not allow pressing until last minute of 2nd and 4th quarter. What does defense look like in half court? My team mainly uses man to man defense.

You have the "A" player pick up the ball at the half court line and the "B" and C" players are positioned so the formation is a 1-2-2; same as it is full court. Then they adjust to offensive players in their area ("Don"t guard air"). From there, you apply the rules just as though it was full court. You are constantly trapping and playing passing lanes ("Where's the next pass going?"). The whole idea is to NOT let them run their half court offense that they practice all the time. You cause them to do things on offense that they don't practice. It forces them into scramble mode and chaos ensues. Again, under no circumstance do we allow them to run their regular offense. As mentioned in the video, there will be times where you will give up an easy score. But the tradeoff is creating lots of turnovers that create many more easy scores for your team. And really encourage your players to intercept passes....no holding back. I hope this answers your question. Good luck with your team. Best- Doug Schakel

could you explain what "we don't guard air" means. Thank you.

"Don't guard air" means adjust to and be near an opponent...don't guard an area; guard a person in your area. --Doug Schakel

If there is no person in your area; go guard the next logical opponent. That's why it is a "scramble" defense....we are constantly scrambling around to see where and how we can make a play that makes a difference. Just standing in your area does not make a difference.

No disrespect to you because I think you are awesome, but so sad NOT to see women coaching girls.

I agree, Lisa, but it seems like the ranks of female coaches are diminishing. I'm not sure why. Maybe one of our viewers would like to weigh in. --Doug Schakel

Doug Schakel Just heard the UCLA women's coach make both points on the coaching u podcast. Would like to see more women, but seems like less are interested.

Ask female players how they feel about the average woman’s coach (Not the good or great ones). With over 35 years of Basketball experience, personal conflict with women coaches is a huge factor in young ladies continuing with the sport on either side of the bench. Who ever can do the best job is really all that matters. Young ladies will stop playing all together if they have continued conflict. “Female athletes respect a coach who is in control and leads the team and the training, but this should be balanced with flexibility and some negotiation with the athletes themselves.” Those that meet that criteria will be successful.
