ABC Wide World of Sports
As a build-up for their rematch, Howard Cosell sits down with Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier to review their first fight from 1971. Tension builds and eventually erupts.
The day after the studio brawl the New York State Athletic Commission fined both Ali and Frazier $5,000 a piece.
Two day later Ali would avenge his first career loss as he won the rematch with a 12-round unanimous decision over Frazier.

Most people don't realize this, but this was the very first live "Real-TV" event in television history. I was thirteen years old and I watched this with my two older brothers and my father. When Joe stood up over Ali and they began to tussle while the cameras rolled, we were in absolute SHOCK. We had NEVER seen anything like this. Ali and Frazier are the pioneers of "Real-TV". 😃

I saw it as a small child too, but just about everyone, including Cosell, thought at first that it was a put on to hype the upcoming bout. But then you could see, as Cosell remarked, that Joe was indeed serious and really angry. I suppose that Joe had some insecurities about his lack of education, and when Ali called him "ignorant," he pressed the wrong button. However, it was daft on Joe's part to bring up the issue of hospitalization.

Ali/Frazier - Two men that deeply needed each other. Two men that gave their blood and sacrificed their bodies for the sport they loved so much (and were extraordinarily good at). I don’t think we’ll ever see a rivalry as deeply personal and intense as theirs. God speed Smokin Joe, God speed Ali!
@lwmson
@lwmson 5 лет назад
I disagree that they hated each other. Ali certainly didn't hate Frazier, and Joe deep down didn't hate Ali as much as he claimed. There's footage of him getting emotional when he talks about Ali's struggles with Parkinsons. It was just that Joe, by his own admission, was sensitive . He just took Ali's pre-fight banter too personally.

Yes, we can see his noble side, and he does have a beautiful soul, but he disappoints us almost every time (until he was much older and wiser). I really hate to say it, but his influence on his generation and the one directly under him, was immense, and in my opinion, vastly negative. He was the HERO of so many, and can you imagine what the world would be like if everyone were so arrogant, bigoted, so full of hate? Does the legacy of Jim Crow Laws explain and justify this kind of behavior? If so, when will we ever, ever be free? The 'devil' is the anger, the hatred itself, on all sides. Centuries from now, if the human race survives, we will look back on this with sad, incredulous irony- grown men being paid huge sums to injure each other physically , emotionally, and yes, mentally as well. How crudely, how low can humanity sink into the mire?

It was a completely stupid thing for Frazier to say- that Ali had gone to the hospital. Frazier went to the Hospital for one week, and then returned to the hospital for three more weeks. And because he had such bad brain concussion his body was shutting down. And without a month of care he would have died. Ali went to have his jaw checked, and then he went home.

For all of those who constantly say that Ali "mistreated" Frazier and treated him like dirt or whatever, just watch the sequence starting at 28:40. Ali says something to the effect of how he said unflattering things about Joe to promote the fight, but he actually did have great respect for Joe both as a man and a fighter. The problem is that many from younger generations were misinformed by that propaganda HBO film "Thriller in Manila" and not realizing that they were ill-informed. That inane doc even took excerpts from this telecast, particularly the brawl between Joe and Ali, to distort history and mislead the public into thinking that Ali was a villain, but that's far from true. He was actually a very classy guy. Actually, it was Joe who started that melee by making the less than intelligent remark about Ali having to go to the hospital.
