www.nucleusheal... - This 3D animation on abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery depicts the anatomy of the aorta and both the open and endovascular procedure for repairing an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Abdominal aortic aneurysm (also known as AAA, pronounced "triple-a") is a localized dilatation (ballooning) of the abdominal aorta exceeding the normal diameter by more than 50 percent. In the open procedure the abdomen and aorta are opened and a graft is sown into place. In an endovascular procedure catheters are used to place a stent graft in the aneurysm.

I had this done 6/1/20. We have been watching this for 5 yrs. The last CT scan had showed its growth rate had increased. The decision was to finally have this procedure. Overnight stay and back to normal routines for this 82 yr. old.

Sorry to hear you're afraid of the procedure after watching the animation. Perhaps it would help if you spoke directly with your doctor about your fears to gain some reassurance. An abdominal aortic aneurysm may be life-threatening if not treated. Good luck, and thank you for sharing your opinion.

@@sharanyabhandary1666 Late answer. I was worried about my aorta due to pain in this area. My husband took me to the ER one night because of this pain. The doctor did checked my aorta, liver, kidneys, stomach with ultrasound. Nothing was wrong with my aorta or anything else. Maybe take your mum to a doctor and ask him to check your mum's aorta. Stay safe.

Because operation is to risky and stant is not possible so we have to do open surgery. After performing operation she was ok but after 4 days of operation she got infected on blood and urine. After 2 days heart arrest but she survive at that time but unfortunate she goes in coma and than she fight more than 63 days in icu in vagitative state and than death win over life...

My grandpa underwent open surgery but didn’t make it, he was 83 with an 8cm aneurysm. We found out he had an aneurysm because we took he to the ER for swollen feet; his legs hurt really bad and were purple for about a week. When they did an ultrasound that is where they found the aneurysm that was causing the bad circulation in his legs. We were given the option to chose surgery or not and we decided to go through with it. My grandpa survived the surgery and responded well, but sadly the next day he got lower leg ischemia. Turns out blood clots can happen after the surgery and that is what happened to my grandfather. The muscle in his leg died due to the blood clot and caused him to become very sick to the point of organ failure.

when you look at a long term, studies suggest that there is not much of a difference in mortality and morbidity in Endovascular and open method!!! Retroperitoneal method is preferred now a days in open method. and Endovascular method requires frequent monitoring to make sure it is in the right place or not. altogether risky operation with 1-5 % mortality, my mom is having an open surgery next week. hope everything goes well

@1paar1 They will perform a "by-pass" which means that the blood from the aorta will enter into an external tube which is then connected to the other side of the aorta through a machine; therefore, "by-passing" the aneurysm (which would be at surgical repair during that time). This would maintain the flow of the blood to all organs throughout the surgery.

My dad passed away in 1994 from this procedure because the surgeon did not have the proper size graph/tube. It is my understanding they actually sent someone to another hospital to get the proper size part making the total operation time 11 hours, He died that evening in the ICU, he was only 62 years old. Don't go to a VA for this surgery, do your DD and find the best MD and hospital. There is no second chance with this procedure. I wish everyone who must have this done the very best!!

My grandfather passed from AAA it was heartwrenching, the doctor came in and said that mortality was low but letting it be was not good, the next day he could take it and he started to internally bleed from the ruptured aorta, he only lasted two more days after succumbing to it, I pleeded him to take it but he said he didn't want it, it was very painful to watch him slowly pass away from it, it's was December 25 10:00 am or 2:00 am PT, I feel sorry that he couldn't even reach his 86th birthday, alas my grandfather may you rest with grandma and be happy in your other life 😞

@1paar1 The lower limb can withstand ischemia for upto 4 hours (the time required for the surgery). The aorta can withstand the high pressures ( over 50% of the world's population suffer from hypertension & they are surviving just fine). Therefore, these 4 hours won't affect the heart.

I don't believe that even a tenth of 1 percent of people at 20 develop AAA. Apparently, it's far more common in people over 65, but I've always complained about occasional back and hip pain. I'd probably advise to go to a doctor if these symptoms happen to any college-age person out there.

wait so when the aorta is clamped off what happens to all that blood coming from the heart ???

A cardiovascular perfusionist would be used most likely. To bypass the section of aneurysm.

I’m not sure if I have this. I’m 16 and after I had a meal I all of a sudden had really bad pain in my abdomen and I could feel my abdomen pulsing. The pain went away but the pulsing still persists. My abdomen feels tight whenever I stand up and whenever my heart is beating fast I can feel my abdomen pulsating.

I could see and feel my pulse in my aorta. Had pain and felt sick. My husband took me to the ER. They checked my aorta, liver, kidneys, stomach with ultrasound. It took 30-45 minutes. My aorta was fine.

@lair - When I need to have surgery, I always think #1. of the hundreds of thousands of people, if not millions who have had this and survived. #2 There are great pain teams out there that reduce your pain to nothing or at least an acceptable level. #3. the alternative is..................nothing. (You are a guy right?lol)

Do you THINK that you have it? Or do you KNOW that you have it? If you have it you should not be here writing sweetie, you would be at hospital.
