How to massage your own abdomen (and get back into the old massage headspace!). In this video I demonstrate five massage techniques based on myofascial release. While they're all exceedingly gentle, they're very useful for calming anxiety and soothing the stomach.
0:00 Introduction and disclaimers
2:09 1st technique: Laying on of hands
3:32 Massage as sanctuary
7:17 Mindful massage
8:29 2nd technique: Sun and moon
9:27 3rd technique: Pressing inferiorly
11:12 4th technique: Pulling superiorly
11:44 Working with hairy clients
12:54 Other techniques: Sinking in
As you try these techniques, realize that there is really no "right" hand placement. Our main target here is the fascia overlying the abdominal contents; think of "dragging skin" and you'll be doing it right. Put the fascia under tension and take some slightly deeper breaths, and afterwards you'll end up breathing more freely and calming the tummy right down.
Want to see how to do these on a client? Check out my video on abdominal massage and the vagus nerve: • Tutorial: Abdominal ma... That one gets more into the nitty gritty of technique, but it's still quite broad and gentle. Let me know what you think in the comments!
