The ratlings being good snipers is a reference to Tolkien. The Hobbits have 2 surprising combat attributes: the ability to move about with perfect stealth, and uncanny accuracy with slings and thrown stones.
"You're a necron overlord who lived around 60 million years and used to conquer the galaxy and then five of these ogryns who can't count to three run up to you and rip all of your limbs off." Thats the funniest part of this episode for me LOL.

Fun facts about Navigators: -Due to their nav-gene being extremely recessive, they tend to only make offspring with other navigators, which connected with cut-throat politics and constant family feuds of Terra means almost all of them are horribly inbred -All Navigators, no matter the status of their family, will eventually suffer mutations due to nature of their gene. There are no uniform ways it happens, but it always gets worse with age, to a point where really old Navigators don't even remotely resemble humans anymore and have to be obscured from populus, their family and ESPECIALLY the Inquisition
It's worth mentioning that it's only the horribly mutated navigators that have to worry about the Inquisition, the rest just get a stern glare because they're a necessity.
"and ESPECIALLY the Inquisition" To be fair, while the Inquisition can and some more zealous Inquisitors do sometimes go after Navigators for aberrations in mutations... Usually it's left alone unless it's Chaos shit or they're doing something that threatens the Imperium. If they just have horrible mutations but aren't tainted by Chaos or doing anything, even the most self-righteous of Inquisitors are unlikely to go after them because while they do technically have the authority to do so... The Navigator guilds are one of those entities you simply don't piss off. Ever. Not if you know what's good for you. And while the Navigator guilds are cut-throat bastards against each other, they do protect their own. It would not be unthinkable for an Inquisitor that purged a Navigator that was a loyal servant to the Imperium to suddenly develop a lot of issues with getting reliable transport and suddenly finding out that there's no Navigators available to crew whatever ship he happens to be on. It's the same way you don't piss off the AdMech. Sure, if it's legit heresy/heretek behavior, go for it. But if you're just pissing in their pool because you can technically do so with your authority... That's one very foolish Inquisitor that is going to have one very, very short career as one.
@@matchesburn Inquisitor Gideon Lorr kills both Astropaths and Navigators quite frequently without charging them of any crime, because he views all psykers as daemon-bridges. I'm surprised that the Navigator Houses and the Adeptus Astra Telepathica haven't sent assass- I MEAN Ork Snipers after him.
@@jagnestormskull3178 That's surprising. How the hell does he get a ride anywhere if he's killing Navigators all the time? From what I understand, the fastest way to get stranded on a planet and without any warp-capable ships to transport you is to piss off the Navigator guild to the point where they don't allow you passage. I mean, many high-ranking Inquisitors Navigators in their retinue because of how much they have to travel and it's convenient having them for that purpose. You'd think ever Inquisitor would want one and to not piss off the guild.
Fun fact about the Ogryn Rippa gun, it actually has a staggered rate of fire most of the time, aka doesn’t shoot as fast as it could. Apparently Beastmen happily served as Imperial Army auxiliaries to the Space Marine Legions during the Great Crusade, part of their thing is that when the Heresy began; a LOT of Beastmen sided with Horus's forces and so in the modern Imperium they're heavily ostracized to the point that joining Chaos is almost they're only option.
It's also region, world, and commander dependent going from shoot on sight, to hey let's stick explosive collars on them and point them at the enemy, to get that gloriously horny son of a bitch into the PDF or Guard where he or she can put to better use.
I'm imagining an inquisitor doing the shocked pikachu face hearing that modern beastmen get ostracized so much for having fallen to chaos in the past that they fall to chaos in the present too.
They still served as auxiliaries until fairly recent times and I think they were even playable in IG armies in very early editions. Unfortunately GW decided they didn't fit with imperials and the tone they wanted to give to the universe (Read: They wanted to distance it from Fantasy). Thus, they were quietly dropped for a while. In universe, the reasonwas the Inquisition decided they too mutated to not by a product of chaos corruption (They may have a point) and were banned from joining the guard.
Gonna drop an extra tidbit which if I am incorrect you're welcome to correct, internet! But if I recall a Ratling is recorded as the first confirmed kill on a Tau Ethereal, after scouting out an Armoured force on the way to attack an Imperial outpost. He saw what to him were leaders discussing prior to the attack so he took the chance and domed the blueberry, throwing the force into disorganisation and panic and securing the victory
Strictly speaking there are limits on abhumans. Theres an entire organization devoted to determining if a strain is human, abhuman, or mutant with the last one being exterminated.
Actually mutants do occasionally have an option to become conscripts in a Penal Legion. It's basically still a death sentence, but it's an opportunity for them to demonstrate their loyalty to the Imperium and the God-Emperor.
Reminds me of this comic where some purifier dude with a flaming hat did a reverse devastation on a group of mutants, he killed 9 of them and had the 10th one put into manacles and a sign and let loose.
@@Brutalyte616 The Navy also occasionally hauls out the mutants and abhumans from the depths of their ships to replace crew losses, then kills them off once they can replenish with actual humans. It's even a mechanic in Rogue Trader, the TTRPG!

A note on the Afriel Strains because I love them: They actually were incredibly effective soldiers. They were hard, fast, skilled, pretty much everything they were meant to be. That bad luck didn’t really happen until after the battle was over. They also are pretty blunt. For example, a female Afriel Strain once walked into the canteen of a penal legion…topless. When one of the penal legionaries obviously tried to cop a feel, she responded by ripping his eye (pretty sure it was an eye) out and presented it to the company commander. Edit: fixing autocorrect.
There are two, including the one mentioned, in 13th Legion. She survives into the second Last Chancers book as well. As I recall, there was at least an entire Regiment of Afriel Strain setup by that experiment. Doing great work by all accounts, but with an inexplicably high loss rate. Something about how Murphy's law is a certainty for the Afriel, not a suspicion.
the ogryn are big because of the cold, not the gravity. The square cube law means that if you double somethings size you cube (to the power of three) its volume. This makes it easier for an animal to stay warm in a cold enviroment, they have way more body to produce heat as compared to surface area for them to loose heat from. Its why polar bears, emperor penguins, blue whales (all whales actually), seals, walruses, wolly mammoths, etc. were/are so big, especially compared to their more tropical relatives. Edit: to be fair elephants and wooly mammoths are big because of another evolutionary factor, defense. Get big enough and predators will avoid hurting you. Their size meant they were just predsiposed to surviving in colder climates.
@@zalekvoris1517 Evolutionary differences between modern humans are minimal. We adapt to environments mostly through technology (even clothing and shelter are basic technology), for example, while Scandinavians do tend to be taller than many other humans, the Inuït people do not, despite having lived in climates that stay below freezing year-long for thousands of years. This is why the genetic differences between ethnic groups aren't even significant enough to constitute a different race (scientifically speaking), much less a sub-specie.
I remember a conversation about the ogryn and it went something like “class ogryn as children, and when children misbehaved who do you blame? You blame the parents” It was due to one of them having issues with working with the big guys because they could never keep them under control so commisar Gallus scorns him
OK! A fun story! I made a character for Rogue Trader (the tabletop RPG set in the 40K universe) with the "false man" background (ie genetically engineered, born in a tube basically) who was made by a heretek. I did not know about the Afriel strain until later, but it just so happens I made her albino. Once I heard of the Afriel strain, me and my GM worked in her backstory that the heretek that created her used forbidden lore to improve on the Afriel strain, and my character was the only succesfull specimen. Bow, here is the real fun part: Me, the player, had an INSANE luck with my rolls. Sneak through a corridor littered with surveilance cameras unseen? Nailed it. Snipe a heavily protected driver while hanging on to a careening guncutter? No problemo. Yes, my character, Mira, was an extremely good fighter/assassin, but it doesnt help that I rolled near perfect almost all the time. Even funnier is that it seemed like my luck seemed to be leeched from the other players, as their rolls were usually abysmal. So.. it was kinda lorefriendly in a way! =D

I know y'all were limited by time, so I'll toss one strain of abhuman in here. The Voidborn, humans that only live on the space ships and orbital stations on the Imperium. They have lived so long on the ships and stations that they've developed their own clans and communities that only live in specific parts of the ships and stations. There have been wars fought between voidborn clans on the ships. The voidborn repair and maintain the systems in the parts of the ships they live in,and some of the voidborn clans have developed their own odd religions. They have dark skin and are of a spindly build. Voidborn clans only know how to repair and maintain very specific sections of a ship or station and don't know how to repair or maintain anything else. A voidborn can go their entire life without ever seeing someone outside their clan. There was a short story where a voidborn clan who maintained the coolant regulators on a ship went extinct and another clan had to figure out how to repair them.
I was hoping for someone to talk about those! And the Hullghast and Ghiliam, which are basically something out of Man After Man but stuck on a big spaceship.

“The Troth, hailing from the world of Verdantus, are classified as Abhuman. Abhumans are those sub-species whose existence is tolerated due to their similarities to the human norm, and thus accepted as members of humanity as a whole. Whilst this is certainly the case, the Troth are restricted to a single world in the Imperium, the planet of Verdant, whose ecosystem they are incapable of surviving without, and their actual deviation from “true” human biology is unknown. Those few who are aware of the existence of the Troth theorise that they have developed an intimate relationship with the flora of their home world (which by its name is thought to be a planet covered in great expanses of forest or jungle) and cannot survive without the vegetable component of their symbiosis.” Basically, they are plant people. Mostly provide food shipments to the Imperium.

Another canon Abhuman strain are the “Humans with 4 legs”, aka Centaur humans, discovered on an unknown high gravity planet's surface. Discovered by Guardsman Floscan Hartoum and Commissar Leminkanen (deceased by giant scorpion), this knowledge of Abhuman existence on this world remains undocumented to the wider Imperium at this time. “Back aboard the Imperial battleship Ravenger, the Commissar's report is being filed with the Captain, stating that the planet is worthless and inhabited by ferocious creatures and a primitive semi-intelligent alien species unlikely to progress any further. The report then drops off midsentence on explaining that no further action should be taken. The Captain accepts this and forwards it to the Adeptus Terra. Hartoum, sitting in his cell, reflects on his actions, altering the Commissar's already open report to protect the centaurs from exterminatus, as well as philosphizing on whether the Emperor would abhor or agree with his actions.“ PS: A Small Khornate blood cult had been established among some of the human centaur humans on the planet, resulting in conflicts between the various tribes. The status of the species remains currently unknown. Children of the Emperor - Short story.

The Troth, also known as Homo Sapien Verdantus, are a recognized strain of Abhuman within the Imperium. They are restricted to the world of Verdant.[1] According to legend, a tribal king called Nemus once ruled over a people isolated from the rest of humanity in the time before the Great Crusade. It is said that Nemus swore an oath to protect his world of Verdant if the planet would protect his people. As a result, Nemus' descendants, the Troth, share a symbiotic relationship with the forests of their homeworld that enables them to "converge" with their environment and confound invaders. Over many centuries, the Troth have supposedly been transformed into beings with flesh as tough as oak and digestive systems that can extract nutrients from the earth.[2] 1: Warhammer 40,000 6th Edition Rulebook, pg. 405 2: Liber Xenologis, pg. 27
I think I know what Bricky was getting at with the Homo Sapien thing. That is the scientific classification of the Human species. Some experts have begun to use Homo Sapien Sapien as there is an expectation that there will eventually be a subspecies classification. Like Navigators might be more accurately classified as Homo Sapien Navigo, as they are off-shoots of "standard" humans.
I said it while watching a Majorkill video and it bares repeating, I would unironically like to see what a grim dark take on cat people would look and the fan art is no help cause it's either anime style or furries (sometimes both). The best example I got is the Cathar from Star Wars, specifically how the Knights of The Old Republic games depict them.
3 main ideas that came up for me during this podcast: 1 - catgirl sister of battle, 2- said sisters meeting up with spacewolves. The 3d idea is actually unrelated, what if the Necrontyr were ALL Blanks? This would explain why the old ones didnt want to help them and why they were hated in general.

23:36, I think it has more to do with the frigid nature of the planet, I remember hearing that animals that live in colder climates tend to grow larger
Yep. It's a surface area to volume ratio thing. The larger you are, the less surface area you have relative to your volume. This helps retain heat / insulate better compared to smaller variants of a species. Conversely, hot climates will tend to see a species adapt by becoming smaller (radiates heat away faster compared to their larger brethren).
As soon as it got onto beastmen and rambois all I could think was "after so many thousands of years of sheep sha**ing its good to see that the Welsh and their fluffy wives have representation in 40k"
