i was also wondering - do you ever high pass the main kick or basses anywhere in the processing chain?

@@itsalistairjames If you look at the 2nd kick in the video. There is only one layer of the main kick with bass (under 200Hz approx.), all of the others layers are high passed (either the main kick or other samples (snare, impacts, etc.)) because you want only one clean sub and no clash in this frequency range. For the bass, sidechain is used to not clash with the bass of the kick. If you use two basses (one reverse bass and one psybass together for exemple), then one of the bass should have an highpass to have only one clean sub in the lows. This could be explained physically because low frequencies can cancel each other. I hope it is clear!

@@graphmusic thank you for explaining, that makes perfect sense! what i was meaning is, do you low cut the main kick / bass group at any stage to remove unwanted sub like 30-40hz? or is it not necessary to do so

@@itsalistairjamesYes you can, especially in the mixing phase, to withdraw useless frequencies under 20-30Hz that can absorb the power of the speaker. But it depends on the track. Also, a transparent eq should be used because I know that Ableton eq can modify the overall sound with these eqs. Fabfilter pro Q is better for this.

@@graphmusic The file downloaded from Bandcamp includes an Ableton Live Pack file with the extension .alp. Dragging the file into Ableton lets your save it as an Ableton Live Set. However, file won't open with Ableton 11. Using Ableton 12, at least on Windows it crashes Ableton 12 with the message "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" in the logs (AppData\Roaming\Ableton\Live 12.0.10\Preferences\Log.txt) I do not have a couple of plugins used by the Project file, however I do not think it should crash Ableton. Usually it just complains about missing plugins. Hopefully it gets fixed! Thanks!
