My god. Where have you been the last three years? I've been looking so long for some practical Ableton sound design tutorials, and yours are presented so well. It's super inspiring to see Ableton in such a different way than what I'm used to
Love this kind of thing. There're too many tutorials on Ableton where they go straight into some expensive 3rd party plugins rather than use the stuff that's there already. I want to know all about Operator, Wavetable, Simpler, Sampler, Tension and Impulse - and things like Drum Buss and the built-in filters, eqs and reverbs before I start shelling out for anything else.
I’m fairly new to Ableton and I agree. I’m shocked at how deep and wide the included tools are. I came into Ableton like it’s a standard DAW, arranging and editing audio, but it operates almost like a modular sampler. The simple and consistent interface belies the underlying complexity and power of its tools. I keep finding new stuff where I’m like “oh wow I didn’t need a 3rd party plugin for that”
Excellent video man, I am finishing my final year of a degree using Ableton as my principle DAW, found your channel this week and am truly blown away. Thanks for all your work, can’t wait to see more on this topic.
Really wish Ableton got an UI upgrade to lean in to this modular approach a bit more. Make it possible to expand the instrument pane so I could see more than just the width of my screen at one time. Make the mappings from envelope and lfo visual, like a patch cable style or maybe a master modulation matrix and you're basically approaching something like VCV rack
I’m just rounding on my second month of a three month trial for 11 suite. It solved so many of the headaches I had with Maschine and Reason I put everything up for sale and am about to have everything centered around ableton, the novation launchpad pro 3 and the apc40 mk2. Your tutorials are excellent. Thanks.
I went down the modulation rabbit whole year's ago haha. Sometime I'll find something I made back then and it makes me laugh. What I will say is that can make my own sounds in my vst plugins so it was worth the it in the long run
Looking forward to your full course stuff. You’re one of my favorites to watch here (and I watch a lot) as I learn the most from you. Just wanted to say thanks.
Thanks for all the effort you put into these tutorials mate. I have been jamming out with suite trying to squeeze out as much value as I can with the stock instruments and effects and your channel is invaluable. Keep on doing what you do!
the effect of the envelope around 5:00 makes it sound a lot like the synth/siren sound in Tame Impala's song Powerlines! Good trick to have in the arsenal.
Hey bro, sorry for writing again, I got my curious mode going and I decided to do a fun test that I think you'll enjoy.. I took serum and chose a random wavetable.. i took a sampler and tried to use the same wave table from serum.. it was kinf of easy to figure out how to match both in sound at the start... a couple of LFOs in I was spending longer and longer to try to recreate the sound in sampler... but it was super fun. Make an "Live Serum Chain" and see how it works.. thanks again!
Thanks so much for this, spent so much time playing with serum and phaseplant that I start to run out of ideas, meanwhile live itself has endless possibilities..
I started using ableton a few months ago and I haven't made any music yet (kind of) cause I'm just playing with live's stock plug-ins and stuff like this. I LOVE this DAW. This the first video of yours I watch btw, but count me as a new sub.
I'm so used to doing LFO's to LFO's it just seems normal for me. I never wind up with the sound I wanted in the first place . there's so many sounds you can get lost in and I follow that lead. I've had Ableton Live 10 a few months now, and with a little digging I can get what I was looking for. It's pretty awesome to just fiddle with on a Push 2 or desk full of hardware.
I recently have been watching a lot of VCV videos and trying to use a EuroRack in Ableton. I had the idea that Ableton and Max could do a lot of the stuff that happens in VCV directly. Of course there is OSCiLLOT Modular System. But this video was an eye opener. I would like to see more of this type of video.
this is so cool. i was exactly looking for something like this. wanted to modulate Analog's LFOs by another LFO to speed up filter modulation over time. thanks a lot!
the modulated hi-hat with beat repeat effecting the pitch reminded me of Daft Punk's Alive 2007, during "Oh Yeah", before Technologic comes in. Although I'm sure they were using their JazzMutant Lemurs to achieve that effect
This is a very interesting work flow I don’t ever use session view but this is a great way to introduce some randomness and happy accidents into composition writing so I’m definitely going to try this out!
At 7:33 and 7:48 you're actually talking about frequency modulation, which happens at higher speeds. Amplitude modulation is at lower speeds and sounds like a tremolo effect.
Not quite correct! Amplitude modulation affects the volume (amplitude) of a signal, whereas frequency modulation deals with pitch (measured in frequency). The speed at which either is happening has nothing to do with what is being modulated. In fact, in different instances either could even be called a tremolo. In production, tremolo is a technique of AM, whereas on the guitar, a tremolo bar is used for FM.
i wish i could just keep dropping LFO & Envelop devices from the Push2 *AND* assign them to ANY macros/parameters ON the PUSH2, without a keyboard/mouse The push2 is incredible, but the freely assignable LFOs are really missing.
I do hope Ableton dives a little deeper into their own modulation. Also, what sets hardware modular apart is audio rate modulation as well as complexity having no impact on performance for most modules (non CPU driven).
Thanks, this was fun to watch! As a beginner I am sometimes most interested in "where is he clicking to do what he says?" but somethimes I have trouble following your mouse (black on dark colors) --> Could you maybe increase the contrast of your mouse with regard to the ableton colors? Just an idea...
Signed up to be notified! Do you have an estimated deadline for your first bit of content? I've learned so much from you already, I can't wait to see what else you have in store! Stay awesome dude!
Difficult to say. I'm presently working on the Songwriting and Composition course and that will likely take about 100 hours or so to shoot and edit! What I'm struggling with right now is whether or not to release them as they come out or shoot them all and release them as a batch so users can either get one of them or all 5 at a discounted rate. This is the most time consuming and cerebral thing I've ever done. But i think the end result will be amazing.
@@SeedtoStage hell yeah dude. I think doing the lot and then uploading them is the way to go, but that just my opinion. I'm sure they'll be great either way.
I love this feature in max. They need to change the name of this feature. I could give you 10 reasons why, but the #1 reason is when searching for max for live devices online that are "mappable" a search query has no means of separating this feature (inner-app mapping) from devices designed with midi controller mapping in mind (as a surprising amount of max objects are not in fact mappable).
I'm curious how much of this example is specific to Max versus how much can be applied in just the standard version. I'm still really new to this so I'm a ways off from making that additional investment.
@@SeedtoStage I'm definitely not the only one. A second after saving it changes prompting another save. Reopen it's moving before samples finish. Boom.
I've been saying this for a while. I don't understand the Bitwig hype - Max for Live enables the same things like Bitwig's "Modulators" and "The Grid" and has been around for many years. Bitwig just has a more polished workflow around modular.
I honestly wish there was a way to expand abletons effects chain into a full screen window sometimes though, just for a better view of everything and what's modulating what. Aside from that (and the loop length for audio tracks feature being only available on Push 2), I'm really happy with Ableton.
Well Max devices were sketchy sometimes, and having possibility to use modular workflow inside a DAW without something like Max I find pretty hype worthy. Also Ableton Live Suite cost 600€ and bitwig studio only 379€. So yes I get the hype.
Thanks for the video - I can't afford a modular synth, either money-wise or space-wise. BTW, @7:47 - It's Frequency Modulation, not Amplitude modulation.
There are Max 4 Live plugins that emulate that kind of stuff. But I would also be curious to see if it is possible to use an LFO or envelope to generate random notes. I dont't think it is possible.
Anthony, Please help me get a stream using obs and soundflower. And get the metronome in my headphones and master audio in headphones only. you have helped me so much. I truly thank you.
The only thing Live really lacks is more complex LFO timing. 8 bars is nothing. LFO modulator can go up to 32 but even that is pretty basic when the tempo gets faster. I don’t understand why you can’t just put in whatever you want, should be a very simple formula to calculate the exact herz. Like why can’t I have a LFO that has a frequency of 30.25 bars? Also wavetable lfo’s seem like a no brainer to me.
Very intersting content ! But in my live 10 when I clic on map button, it doesn't flashing. So i can't map anything, do you know why ? Thx for your answer
