'Sound Design with Common Objects' w/ Chris Petti
Earlier this year Dubspot partnered with Decibel Festival in Seattle to present a series of music production and DJ workshops at this year's edition of the annual music, technology, and art event. During our visit, Dubspot curriculum director Chris Petti led a music production and sound design workshop, using Ableton Live and a Blue Snowball USB mic to sample and process sounds produced by various household objects including spoons, a fork, fruit, and other common items, showing the kinds of effects that can be made using these sounds as a starting point. Sampling sounds from your immediate environment like this is a great way to come up with fresh new ideas and directions.

i find he has a very badass attitude towards clipping and i respect that

normally you don't clip the samples, and you use compression to reduce the dynamic range between low and high amplitudes. he's over-saturating everything, and uses stock drums

yeah true. I recently saw a video from Ott who is one of my favorite arists where he showed how he did his percussion. He makes sort of dubby psychedelic music with lots of percussion but he said he never used samples and recorded everything himself, then he showed his 'toy' box, a box full of cheap ass percussion instruments. I looked at my percussion and realised I had better quality percussion instruments. Made my own toy box and used it in my latest track, never had such character before.

Anyone know where I can buy that loopmasters drum pack with 128 of everything? Or something similar?
@jasonmalcolmgibbins
@jasonmalcolmgibbins 10 лет назад
You can't. he made it himself. Its probably a mixture of 128 of his favourite samples from multiple sample packs.

what interface is that?
@samlee2562
@samlee2562 9 лет назад
the DAW he's using is Ableton Live if that's what you mean by interface, I don't think there's an audio interface as he's using a USB mic straight into a mac and there's a mini mixer on the table but that's just hooked up to speakers.
