In this Ableton Live video tutorial, Professor Nalepa takes us through three music production techniques commonly used to spice up vocals. Using the lead vocal sample from Radiohead's song 'Reckoner,' Nalepa demonstrates a vocal effect that involves reversing a vocal sample, routing it out through reverb, resampling the reverb, reversing the resampled reverb, and then layering it underneath the original vocal to get a ghostly premonition-style effect heard in many popular dance tracks. Nalepa also deconstructs tracks from his friend Nosaj Thing and former Dubspot students It's Not Over Quebec, showing how they utilized sidechain compression and sidechain gating to achieve creative rhythmic vocal effects.

A further step to your first example (with the Radiohead vocal) is that you can then throw a compressor on the reverse reverb track and sidechain it back to the original. The compressor will duck the reverb according to the original vocal, and that way the reverse effect will only poke through in the little spaces between the vocal lines (if that makes sense). Helpful if you want that backwards echo effect but also want more clarity in the vocals.

Always great good stuff. Finally getting to the point where with some vids, you just mention what you're going to do, and I can figure it mostly out, without watching the rest of the vid. Wouldn't have got this far without Dubspot tutorials.

Everything i have ever picked up musically i learned on my own because my parents could never afford music lessons so i showed my self how do everything and now im happy that i am self taught mind you i did do some studying on mixing and mastering before i tried to send out anything for some people like my self music is just in the DNA and some people need teachers but at the end of the day it does not matter because really its just a passion i watch these videos to learn new things and try and think of way i can twist it and make it my own from the learning but i must say i would love to go to school for audio engineering and go professional with you know movie sounds and all that hollywood shit haha but my point is it really does not matter weather you have a teacher or you teach your self of course you can appreciate the music you make a bit more when you are self taught but it really does not matter your just doing what you love to do :)

@blueandmax to get the full affect you have to push the wet/dry to 100%. if you do that with the reverb on the track itself you wont hear the original vocal clearly enough. plus to demonstrate this for us it was a lot easier for him to use the return track instead, especially since he showed multiple techniques and used different audio track to show us. it was a lot easier for him to just use the sends.

its called a reverse reverb, that's been the name for it ever since it was popularized in the 80's by poltergeist. And even before that when Jimmy Page used it in led zeppelin songs.

hey did you intend to keep yoer reverb send dry/wet at 50%? or did you forget to put it to 100%
@mehradmuse
@mehradmuse 9 лет назад
Cool. Tnx. One question. Did you leave the dry/wet of the send reverb channel unchanged on purpose or you forgot to adjust it or it's not important here in this case?
@lonelywolfy
@lonelywolfy 13 лет назад
@chuckles1252 its not really playing it reverse exactly let me see if i can explain. because theres a decay tail on the reverb it elongates the vocal, and so when you reverse it back the parts of the vocal that were sang at one point on the original now start playing slightly before on the recorded reverb. so even thought its not playing backwards it kind of creates the effect that it is. its pretty ingenious. id always wondered how that kind of effect was produced, im so glad i know now!

@whinchacha If you activate High-Q you will actually introduce slight distortion. Only use this if you're planning on warping or altering the pitch of the file... you can prove this by dropping in a commercially mastered track that peaks at -0.01, and if you activate the High-Q the track will begin to peak over 0.00.

Great video! "Let's just use the 'oohs' we have here" haha! I just want to ask a couple of things: On the Radiohead song, did you extract Thom York's original vocals from the song with some phase cancellation trick (if that's possible) or you already had the sample from before? Also on the second tip when you sidechained the vocals, did you mean to raise the knee or the ratio on the compressor? Thanks!
@jmotter92

Sure beats flipping the tape over where track 24 becomes track 1, the way we did this in the 80's!!! Currently looking into reverse effects for a live performance, (which obviously still play after the source) so far , Max for live's Buffer shuffler is the only device that can reverse signals in REAL TIME. Can anything else do this?

Super sorry to bother you, but I've been working mostly with arrangement view, and session view is somewhat confusing to me. I dont have the audio from/monitor/audio to areas in the session view panes like you do, so I'm not able to route my audio to effects. How do I get these to show up? Already asked google.. couldn't find anything. Thanks in advance.

I don't have the section in Ableton Live that reads "Audio From" or "MIDI From". The block is missing and the only thing that displays are the sends up to the "Stop Track" Section. Can anyone help me figure out how to get that? Why am i missing it?!
@dodge70chargerrt
@dodge70chargerrt 13 лет назад
Sidechain note: Make sure you change the ratio (harder the ratio the harder it ducks), as well as the release (this is a big one). This vocal sidechain sounded (to me) compressed too long, needed a shorter release. Also in ableton try the different compressor types (adds slight variance).

the reverb would happen after the sound, snare hit(e.g.) followed by reverb. if you reverse the snare then add a reverb the tail comes after the end of the reversed snare which is actually the start of it, so when you reverse this again the tail creeps in before the sound but the sound plays forward, make sense?

You guys should make a video, not on how to do something specific, but about the program itself. I can easily replicate what you do in your videos, but without my own understanding of the program i cannot recreate it in my own style. Could you please do that, it would be super awesome to actually learn this program instead of selective tools or VST's!! Regardless, awesome tuts, awesome tips, and awesome instructors. THANKS! :)

I have a question. I applied that side chain compressor to 5 of my tracks in a song by running the compressor into return B and turning the sends to B on all the tracks I want compressed. Is this the way to do that? The only way to make it sound right is by changing all of those track's audio to "send only." If at a later point in the song I want that compressor from the kick to turn off, how should I wire it? Any suggestions will help, thanks! Awesome tutorial man!
