In this Tech Tip we take a look at the features of the Ableton 8 Drum Rack.
The Drum Rack allows you to load up samples and trigger them as and when you want, but it also has a few other features which aren't immediately obvious such as internal send / return tracks and grouping capabilities.

Very helpful! I've been using drum racks for a while but never knew you could group the internal tracks! Will save a lot of space and allow much more on one rack! thanks guys!

Nice tip on the Multis. I didn't know that assigning them all to the same trigger would group them together as a Multisample on the DrumRack. Now I know. I really appreciate your time!

hi, this is not an insert, it is an internal return track. an insert would 'insert' the effect into the signal chain. this plays the original audio unaffected and allows for 'sending' to the return track. hope this helps

@anthonybrianperez just double click on the snare sample until it opens in simpler and then you can transpose it down from there

@MigoiMusic Yeah you can sidechain in a drumrack... each of the drum channels works exactly the same as a normal channel.

@MigoiMusic think of defining output of your kickdrum. once you have rout that to a defined channel, you can do it. not sure, but give it a shot.

Is there any particular reason to why you chose C2 and A1 for the kick and snares or was it just a random pick for them to stay constant? thanx :)

I had question. How would you pitch one voice with in a drum rack with out affecting the whole drum rack? for example if I wanted to pitch down a snare but not everything else.

i have one question. i'm creating my own drum racks now consisting of 64 kicks so i can use the racks with launchpad and easier acces to the samples, snare in another, etc. when i save my drum rack, do the samples that i have in the drum racks save in the ableton library folder? basically, does it duplicate my samples? cheers

Is there any way to increase the release passed 60? I find if I have a 4-6 second loop assigned to a pad, it loses velocity/volume after 2-3 seconds...

Do you know how I can use the compressor side chain effect for like the lead instrument into only like the kick drum part of my drum rack? I dont want the whole drum rack to be side chained though.

@SonicAcademy Hi .. I got only one problem with the drum racks... when it comes to arrangement view .. and I need to for example .. drop the kick out .. and leave the rest of percussion playin .. how the hell do I do that ? .. Do I need to automate the volumes ? That would be a pain in the ass :( Hope there is a way to go about this. Cheers

i figure it out by myself, but tnx anyway! I modified sampler (release and other things to max) and made it default in drum rack and now it plays like it should! :)

how to trigger a sample in drum rack without the sample getting quiet after a few bars? I've tried everything, release, sustain, decay and nothing helps. Sample DO get very quiet after a while. I'd like to triger longer samples, to a half minute. Is that possible without note lenght, just with drum rack?

Hi ! Great tips here.. thank You .. but I also have this question : is there a way to split the drum rack tracks into seperate, regular channels .. I know I know .. You're asking yourself .. well what do You need the drum rack for in the first place ? .. well the only problem with the drum rack is that when I work in the session view .. it won't allow me to control the single drum rack parts for the scenes .. I hope this makes sense ... can anyone help me out on this ? peace :)

I have 1 question, the thing you do in the very beginning, dragging the drum rack to de midi-track. That doesn't work with my ableton for some reason. Does anyone know why this is like that, I just can't make drum beats because of this.

using return chains in drum racks disables return on the actual track that the drum rack is on.. which is a huge bummer :(

question: if I have a sample I load into the drum rack and I want to pitch it down by 7 semitones (and not change the playback speed) how do I do that? Is that even possible?
@worldwidehappiness

Not sure if this is what you want: Double click on the pad in the drum rack, then click on "Controls" then change "transpose". then adjust the Amplitude area to suit.

i cant add a drum rack to a midi column, help?
@cearbhaillblain

It's possible but in the end if you know how to do it you save in both time and cpu weight. I prefer cubase and protools coz when it comes down to playing live and i have to do all this for real, i'm not lost. It's true that a lot of bedroom producers are using ableton these days!!!!

@abletonrookie don't know if it can be done with preset ableton sounds, he's probably got some wav files because it can be done with those. annoying i know.

Well strangely enough for live performance Ableton is the perfect DAW...that's what is was designed for. Protools and Cubase are more your standard DAW used in recording studios. But if you are used to using Cubase (Which I personally think is the worst Daw out there...next to Sonar) then you will find Ableton uncomfortable to use. Cubase and protools are heaps more CPU intensive than Ableton..I've used them all...I know!
@MrAidanstube

Buy yourself a drum kit! Loads of drum sounds there!
@cearbhaillblain
@cearbhaillblain 12 лет назад
Cubase or protools----- Ableton is just difficult and limited you can do all this in about 2 min in either of them

@Jozman500 Never mind, I know the answer. It's because I'm using Live Lite.
@MrAidanstube
@MrAidanstube 12 лет назад
Well actually you can't! You are maybe getting confused with setting up buses and sends.....but this is processing and effects within the rack itself. With Cubase and Protools you can't create racks at all!

I'm sorry man! you have your opinion and i have mine, you say you have used all the DAWS and i know i have, just comes down to a preference then, but i will have to say that your comment on CPU usage is unfounded, i have just finished recording a 40+ track tune in Cubase 5 and if you know what you're at, there is little or no CPU usage. Like i say a difference of opinion, but still i think that if we are constructive like we have been people will learn much more. Thanks for the replies

Where did you find drum sounds? Every tutorial fails to show the most important step! Where are the drum sounds??? I don't care about the midi pads right now. I need drum sounds!!!
