Abney and Abney Grange - “Abba’s Island”
Don’t worry, you’re not going to find any members of a certain somehow popular Swedish band living here, despite the derivation of the places name. Yes, this may mean Abba’s Island, but your ears are safe, I assure you. Welcome to Abney, which is part of the parish of Abney and Abney Grange.
This one is made up of two main settlements - and you don’t need to be a genius to work out what they are. Both are located high in the hills above Hathersage and Eyam, and that gives them both a selection of pretty good views. The best place to admire them in my personal opinion, is from the Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club, which occupies a hillside West of Abney Grange. As landmarks go that’s probably the biggest one in these parts, because neither Abney nor Abney Grange have anything else to rival it.
That said, between the two settlements there’s a private road that leads to a farm. That was the birthplace of a man who would greatly influence the industrial history of the area, thanks to his connections with Richard Arkwright. He was also pretty handy with a pen too, and its perhaps that skill for which he is most remembered.
So in a light rain shower, we’ll take a short walk through another Dales locale. It may be Abba’s island but Benny and Bjorn were nowhere to be seen!
