Hi Fritz, I got my 2014 R9t at the end of the summer last year. I bought it of friend with 4000 km. I had other bikes in the past and still do but nothing compares to this BMW. It's raw power is awesome. Not that I care for the attention but it's unavoidable at the gas station. Not planning to customize maybe a few subtle thing. Just installed a new battery thanks to your help. Can't wait to hit the road again.
My son bought a new R NineT recently and had the same Akrapovic exhaust installed. But, it appears that mechanic did not clean pipes after installation so it looks like there are hand/finger prints burned into header pipes. Any suggestions on cleaning pipes and maintaining the matte finish? Your pipes have hardly any discoloration on them. Thanks,
Hmmmm... yeah the instructions say to clean the pipes with wd - 40 after installation to prevent burn-in stains. Staining on the pipes is oxidation, which should be able to be removed through a simple chemical process. However chemistry is not my strong point... In this situation, I would be squeamish about some the the internet suggestions, Ie: copper pennies, oven cleaner, steel wool etc. The oven cleaner seems plausible just make sure to only put it on stainless steel as it could damage other alloys. I think stainless steel cleaner/polish would probably be your best bet for a non-aggressive method to remove stains. Standard disclaimer: I haven’t tried any of this myself so I don’t know if it would work and it might actually do damage to the finish. Definitely spot test first.
@@fritz-the-jovial so yesterday he used some blue magic metal cleaner that actually took off the oxidation and then he wiped that off with some WD-40. Pipes looked really good until he started it again. And the big white-looking stain came back on one side where we think the mechanic left his fingerprints. It may just need a deeper cleaning. I sent him some automotive scotch-brite pads where he might be able to scrub it with the polish for a deeper cleaning. Thanks, PS He did send manufacturer an email to see what they recommend. Shop was suppose to clean the pipes when they returned the bike to him but they didn't. He had his bike serviced last weekend at 600 mi. He picked up the bike and filled it up for a ride early the next morning and went out to the garage and the floor was covered in gasoline. Mechanics must have nicked the o-rings on the quick disconnect. So shop had to pick the bike up Tuesday and repair it again.
Hey Fritz, just wondering about the carbon canister removal. Does it effect performance or purely aesthetic? It is definitely unsightly. Also what is involved in removal?
It’s definitely unsightly. It provides no performance enhancement. I was able to unplug it and reroute the drainage tube. Some people report the computer reports an error upon unplug.
