Long, day rides, from home can depend a lot on where you live. If you live in flat areas, with long, straight roads, you can cover more miles than if you live in a city, or in the mountains distance to places that have riffs that are unlike your home town roads will again play a part in stressing you out as well… Great video, and cool putting a bit of John’s video in there!!!
@MotoMengy
@MotoMengy Год назад
This is very true. It's much easier to do 1000 miles per day in the Midwest than it is in New Hampshire.

Yep, we took 81 south to get to VAMM - and it was very picturesque! I enjoyed it, other than you know, being on the highway versus the back roads I prefer.

I81 through VA is one of the nicest highways on the east coast IMHO. I've literally ridden it from PA to NC dozens of times.

@@MotoMengy I've not ridden a lot of highways, but it's definitely more scenic and interesting than those in Maryland!

John enjoyed the riding, but was apprehensive of the unknown ahead. The rain while riding the Back of the Dragon did raise everyones concerns. John was more concerned of holding others up on the ride. He did fine and was not the slowest rider in the group. By the time we went our seperate ways he was talking about another long ride this season so stay tuned for that one as well .............................JB..

Thanks for the shout-out, my friend! Jarvis is right - once I got past the whole uncomfortable-ness of the trip, it was quite enjoyable, minus the rain storms. And now I'm planning for more :D Oh, and yeah, just under 400 miles each way from me to Tazewell. Oh, and also, I have no interest in an Iron Butt or Saddle Sore or whatever it is. I prefer to see the sights.
@MotoMengy
@MotoMengy Год назад
I don't mind iron butt style riding, but given the choice I'd always take the slower more scenic ride too. 😎

If riding to enjoy the ride, I prefer around 250 miles when travelling, but most of my rides are sun 150 miles unless heading up country or over to Wales etc. Have done some big trips, 500 mile commute when I was back in the Royal Navy, did that a few times on the bike, but soon realised it was easier to put the bikes in my van and then get them out to play on once up in Scotland that to ride them there.

We love riding long distance! My longest day on backroads is about 550 miles and our longest 2up day on intestate was around 750 miles. We could have done more, but we arrived home from a trip. We want to do an iron butt next year, riding 2up.

Road Reality did a great video talking about his experience with that ride he took. If it’s raining when I’m leaving for a local ride, I’ll usually pass, but getting caught in the rain is no big deal. I too love riding long distance, a few hundred miles in a day isn’t a bad day on the bike. I have never been more than 725 miles in one day, but I’m looking forward to doing it sometimes soon, just to try it…..
@MotoMengy

I do enjoy long distance rides (800+ miles), but given the choice I'd rather putter around minor highways under 60mph and take my time doing like 400 miles per day. Schedules don't always allow that though...

Great scenery .. really enjoyed it .. almost like clockwork, I average 6,000 miles a year doing pretty much only day-rides on the weekend. Only long trip I ever took was though South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado and Utah. My first bike was a Honda ST1300 sport touring bike (Honda's version of a BMW) and I loved the bike, but did not have factory cruise control.

John's just wired different than you and me. I like long distance riding, and it doesnt have to be too far. For me thats anything over a tank of gas. I did a 450 mile ride earlier this year. I have a trip planned for MT washington in two weeks, and I did the saddle sore 1000 to michigan last year. For me exploring on a motorcycle is a great experience and more fun than in a car. Im glad John got that experience and I know he said its not for him but if he changes his mind I know the community can help him with some epic trips.

Mengy, running distances is relative to what you have been conditioned to. I have well over 3 million miles as a Semi driver. For me travelling 600 miles or more in a 24Hr day is not a big deal and I am 68 years old. I didn't start off like that. The biggest battle is in the mind, unless you have serious health issues. To me every long trip I take is not to reach the destination, but to enjoy the ride and sites while getting there. Getting there is the dessert at the end of the meal. If you look at it as an adventure, it is amazing how many miles you can crunch without exhausting yourself or mentally burning out. As long as you dress for the ride, the rest will take care of itself. I think a trip with John would be a hoot! If I were behind him, I would get a lot of swerve practice dodging the ashes coming off of his Stogie.🤣🤣
@MotoMengy
@MotoMengy Год назад
Well said Vincent! I do usually try to enjoy the ride, but sometimes I just want to get across the country to ride somewhere new, and then it's about pounding miles to get there. I do agree the mindset is very important when riding long distances. 👍

I've only done one long distance, multi day ride and I really liked it. I want to do more, but getting the time to do it hasn't worked out lately. The most I did in a day was about 550 miles. On my current bike, Road Glide, that would probably be pretty easy. VAMM is on my list too, had to cancel this year.
@MotoMengy
@MotoMengy Год назад
That's one of my largest problems with long distance rides: finding the time to fit them in. 😔

I never gave a lot of thought to how much I ride but many motorcycle riders think I'm crazy riding like I do. I have done a few 1000 mile days and the longest was over 1100 miles. I just finished a 7200 mile trip to Glacier and on up to Vancouver and enjoyed every mile. I am now into my 4th year on my Goldwing and it just turned over 69000. Long rides on my bike are far more enjoyable than in a car.

I ride about 3,000 - 5,,000 miles a year and I rarely do over 100 miles in a day. In the last seven years I've been riding, I'm a commuter so no much left to the unknown. The most I road in one day was a little over400 miles to meet up with Mr. McStache. I'm not much of a travel person to begin with. The furtherest I drove in one day is 600 miles in a day. My ADHD creeps in. I get so bored. If I could get the time, I would love to do more but I would map out probably 200 miles at most in a day to hopefully some sight seeing stops to spend the night. Maybe it's my age, maybe it my mentality. I just don't enjoy sitting that long. I was on a group ride to Goldmine Road this weekend, 155 miles, four hours and only stopped for lunch. By the time we got back I couldn't wait to get off the bike. It's not that I was physically uncomfortable or in pain, just mentally done. Did I enjoy it, yes. Am I glad I did it, yes. Would I do it again, yes. Would I make the ride any longer? NO! I am one that is hoping for Teleportation. Than I'll travel. As much as I hate the hassles of flying, it's why I fly when I travel. Usually I fall asleep before we get off the tarmac and when I wake up I'm there, refreshed and ready to rock.

I love going long-distance on my Honda Goldwing but I probably wouldn't enjoy it on a motorcycle that wasn't comfortable. To me a comfortable motorcycle has good wind protection, a daylong comfortable saddle, doesn't emit a lot of engine heat, has a heated seat and grips, and has an electrically adjustable windscreen. When I go on long-distance road trips I prefer keeping the daily mileage below 400.
@MotoMengy
@MotoMengy Год назад
Agreed. I spent many years riding HD's cross country with no windshield nor wind protection. Once I discovered what I was missing I changed my tune quick!

Eleven thousand in a year so far, but it was pretty local. I do about two to five hundred miles a week. I could have had more, but I purchased a 2009 Honda Shadow Aero garage find, which barely ran. It was a healing process for the bike and I. You mention eating less while long distance riding. I almost go into trail mix mode, and eat variety of different trail mixes. I have done a few Iron Butt runs, but it was before I knew what an Iron Butt was. That was thirty years ago.

I almost always pack a bag of trail mix for long rides, its handy in a pinch when I can't get anything else quick to eat!

Tazwell Virginia. I don’t know many people who want to ride in the rain. You are correct you have to be prepared just incase. How long did it take you to get used to the DCT? Ride Safe
@MotoMengy
@MotoMengy Год назад
In all honesty it just took me one mile on the test ride to get used to the DCT, it's very intuitive. Once I got my Wing then a few days on it made me more used to it of course, and I did have to practice with it at slow speed maneuvers in parking lots. Now the only problem I have is I never want to ride a manual bike again, LOL!

We usually do about 500-600 miles on the first day of the trip just to get out of Illinois. We would love a days worth of trees, try 12 hours of flatland corn and beans. 🤮

Will see how my new to me 18 DCT tour stacks up against my 09 wing, 1k & 1.5k days were easy on the 09 (yes it had an extra 4 gal fuel cell & 1 gallon hydration system) & eat breakfast bars & sweet & salty peanut bars , never eat a big meal during the ride 😁
