General Dynamics Land Systems has officially unveiled its AbramsX future main battle. AbramsX is a proposed upgrade of the M1 Abrams series of tanks.
It is being pitched as an interim solution between M1A2 SEPv3/SEPv4 and a future Main Battle Tank.
Viewers may note that the initial information regarding AbramsX was provided in a press release that General Dynamics Land Systems put out ahead of the Association of the U.S. Army's (AUSA) main annual convention and trade show in Washington, D.C.
The company first teased the next-generation Abrams design back in June.
In this video Defense Updates analyzes how lethal is the new AbramsX tank ?

correction: AbramsX is an experimental proposal to the US, not an actual replacement. Basically, General Dynamics proposed this and wants the US military to "cherry pick" the things they want from it and change others for future variants of tanks. @acs9289
@acs9289 Год назад
This has the potential to make tanks more practical and creates new new opportunities for doctrines all of its own. With the ability to add or subtract armor packages to the tank, this could mean that two tank types could be utilized. Lighter tanks could be used for higher mobility situations. to have increased reconnaissance ability for an MBT chassis is major. The army could use this to cross fragile infrastructure like small bridges so the infantry wouldn’t have to cross water ways alone. It would also be great for training and maneuvers as it wouldn’t damage infrastructure and would reduce on fuel costs, not to mention it would make maintenance easier. Having a singular main tracked armored vehicle like this is much easier on logistics, universalizing parts for wartime use. With light and heavy tanks looking nearly the same, this would also confuse enemy intelligence on the approximate strength of allied units.

Based on what I've seen that our neer-peers have, a 120mm should be more than adequate. Perhaps design the turret so a 130mm can be mounted without having to redesign everything, but at the moment the Abram's current caliber is the only thing that doesn't need to be updated. This would also mean our old tanks and new tanks would have compatible ammunition and we could hand over our Abrams to countries that need them without major logistics concerns.

A 120mm gun with higher velocity has higher kinetic energy than a 130mm with previous slower velocity. This can be seen from the equation KE = 1/2mv^2 where velocity is more relevant as it's squared. But if 130mm also has higher velocity then 130mm may be the future but then again a new faster 120mm can also be developed.

The whole logistical and economic benefit of having thousands of old M1's in storage, is that the basic structure of the tank is the same, so odd bits, electronics, weapons, engines, etc can be swapped out in order to restore or upgrade them without requiring an entire new body to be manufactured. Reflecting the national interests of the nations involved in it's cobbling together. As for which is the most advanced. That will depend very much on how easy it is to update the AI and sensor suit. The battlefield data integration network and other things. We will just have to wait and see. The hull armour of the Panther is not as good as Challenger, while the new 130mm gun is something of an unknown quantity and will depend on the ammunition being produced. As far as the power pack being hybrid, switching the IC component to being diesel would be a major logistical improvement… needing a separate supply chain just to fuel MTB's is a nightmare. And heaven help any nation that has a mixed force of Abrams and other MTB's - like Poland, that is buying every spare top tier tank it can in order to replace all the tanks they gave to Ukraine, so they have a mixed force of American and South Korean MTB'S. But even for Nations running Abrams only as their MTB force it still means two separate fuel supply chains (one for the Abrams, one for every other ground vehicle, diesel military motorbikes exist just to make logistics easier), something that is extremely difficult for everyone besides the US with its massive logistics. In fact the argument for Australia getting the Abrams was that they would _only be used in a combined operation with America,_ so Australia could just use their fuel supply chain. As well, being able to use diesel means that civilian fuel infrastructure can be used _and scavenged ad hoc,_ very useful when it's a serious conflict and resources are at their limit … instead of the kurbstomps that the Abrams has been used in, … for now.

This is two man tank only
@JD96893
@JD96893 2 года назад
This should just be called the Abrams 2. I find the hybrid engine system very interesting, i'm not sure on the details, but it should allow the tank to move more silently because of no need to start the engine. I'm sure the increased range is a nice bonus as well. The use of an electric motor should also make it highly maneuverable with instant torque and likely equal forward and backward speed.
@liamseven1604
@liamseven1604 2 года назад
The electric side kicks on when the tank idles because for some ungodly reason the Abrams tank consumed the same amount of fuel while idle as if they were going full throttle so it's really just to stop that, the minute it starts moving the electric side shuts off.

All of the features and enhancements sound great but.......who will they lower the mass with all the add ons? What will be removed to make up for all that is added and then some extra to make it lighter? Sounds like a contradiction since as well as weapon systems, almost all vehicles (even our cars) suffer the same weight creep of added features that has plagued the Abrams program. Seems like just the autoloader and added isolation from the turret would add a few tones.

From what we understood following the war in Ukraine, is that one of the weak points of the Russian tanks was having an auto loader that was causing the turret to fly sky high when hit directly. What’s the difference between the Russian tank auto loader and the new American one.

The problem with the Russian tanks has to do with the way the ammunition is stored, in a carosel around within the turrent with no safety measures (e.g., a blast door between the ammo and crew of a blow-out panel).

Reducing crew size in my opinion is not a good thing. Track is heavy and an extra man is helpful. In a combat zone, someone is likely to be on guard while the others sleep, eat, use the bathroom, etc. Fewer people to do this is extra burden on those already there. There is give and take with every option.
