Welcome to my Music Theory Tutorials. In this music theory lesson I continue to explain the tenth Chapter in ABRSM Music Theory in Practice Grade 4. In this tutorial I explain how to construct the chromatic scale.
I have been teaching music theory for over twenty five years and I’ll help you every step of the way - just as if you were sitting next to me. I have provided free a PDF information booklet with all the information you’ll need to work through the Grade 4 ABRSM Music Theory in Practise workbook, available in A4 and US Letter.
Music Theory is an integral part of any musician’s studies. Understanding the structures behind the music we play supports our practise and performance. Even if you don’t play an instrument understanding how music is constructed helps us to be a more informed listener.
I LOVE music theory! It’s like peeling back the layers of the music to look at the nuts and bolts that hold it all together and make the music work.

Thanks Sharon this really helped me. I found this section a bit confusing and thanks for the help. I also need some help with double sharps and double flats and when to put them in the scale. Please let me know if you have any tips

There is no absolute rule for when to use a double sharp or a double flat in the chromatic scale. Usually there are various options which will work. Just refer to the piano keyboard image and then make sure degrees 1,4 & 5 are in line with your tonic - after that it's up to you. (Also remember that each step on the stave must be used at least once but not more than twice). Hope this helps!

sorry to ask again Sharon, In the last example, I had written F# then F natural rather than F# then E#, so this would be incorrect. am getting it now, I just have to keep I,IV,V unaltered and use another option to make the next chromatic step in the scale
@SharonBill
@SharonBill 4 года назад
No, that would still be fine :) In general, just remember that you must use every step (line/space) at least once but no more than twice - & keep 1st, 4th & 5th degrees in line with the tonic/key sig. There are various answers that would be correct :)

The rule is not to alter the 1st, 4th and 5th degree of the scale notes and also to use a letter name at least once but not more than twice. Therefore would it be still correct if I use an E flat instead of a D sharp or vice versa?
@SharonBill
@SharonBill 8 месяцев назад
In principle, yes. However, I try to usually stick to either sharps or flats for consistency wherever possible - but yes, that's it!

Struggled with this one! I really appreciate your videos. So essentially can you just ensure that as long as you don't triple and use more than three. Provided it works chromatically would the answer be correct? For instance, on the F# minor (the last one) I wrote - B - F# - F natural - G - G natural - F - F natural - E - D # - D natural - C - C natural and finally B Would that be correct?

I'm afraid that I don't quite follow your progression, but it sounds like you've got it. So long as you have F# rather that Gb, B rather than A# & C# rather than Db (so that the degrees 1, 4 & 5 are properly represented, and each note is represented at least once but no more that twice - you're sorted :D

Hello Sharon. For the Median of B minor ascending, could the note E sharp in the second measure also be written as f natural? Thank you for everything.
@SharonBill
@SharonBill 4 года назад
Are you referring to a chromatic scale? if so, ideally not as it's best to keep the 1st, 4th and 5th in line with the tonic note/key and the 5th from B is F#. I'm not sure that I understand your question and reference to the median of B minor?
@leo32190
@leo32190 4 года назад
Sharon Bill Yes I am referring to the chromatic scale.
@SharonBill
@SharonBill 4 года назад
@@leo32190 In that case then E sharp is appropriate so that the F can be written as a sharp for the reason explained above.

Thanks a lot ma'am...just a question The 4th question start on mediant of B minor....you made use of E, then E#,F# Can I also make use of E, then F natural, then F#?

You are very welcome. However, I'm afraid that as I'm busy recording and creating lessons, and teaching, I'm only able to answer specific questions to tier three patrons. www.patreon.com/sharonbill

for the last question of the exercise, could I use flats instead of sharps while writing the chromatic scale?
@SharonBill
@SharonBill 4 года назад
You need to write the 1st, 4th and 5th degrees of the scale. I explain in the videos it must be F# (not Gb) & C# (not Db). On other notes you could use a flat if it fits, but it tends to be easier if you work in sharps in a sharp key signature (flats in a flat key) wherever possible. Remember that you must use each step at least once and not more than twice.

on 9:58 can we put a B# instead of a C Natural
@SharonBill
@SharonBill 3 года назад
You can, so long as each 'step' is represented at least once, but no more than twice. Also, so long as you have the tonic represented as a B.
