Absence seizures are one of several kinds of generalized seizures. These seizures are sometimes referred to as petit mal seizures (from the French for "little illness", a term dating from the late 18th century).[1] Absence seizures are characterized by a brief loss and return of consciousness, generally not followed by a period of lethargy (i.e. without a notable postictal state). The clinical manifestations of absence seizures vary significantly among patients.[2][3][4] Impairment of consciousness is the essential symptom, and may be the only clinical symptom, but this can be combined with other manifestations. The hallmark of the absence seizures is abrupt and sudden-onset impairment of consciousness, interruption of ongoing activities, a blank stare, possibly a brief upward rotation of the eyes. If the patient is speaking, speech is slowed or interrupted; if walking, they stand transfixed; if eating, the food will stop on its way to the mouth. Usually, the patient will be unresponsive when addressed. In some cases, attacks are aborted when the patient is called. The attack lasts from a few seconds to half a minute and evaporates as rapidly as it commenced. Absence seizures generally are not followed by a period of disorientation or lethargy (post-ictal state), in contrast to the majority of seizure disorders.[citation needed]
Absence with impairment of consciousness only as per the above description.[citation needed]
Absence with mild clonic components. Here the onset of the attack is indistinguishable from the above, but clonic components may occur in the eyelids, at the corner of the mouth, or in other muscle groups which may vary in severity from almost imperceptible movements to generalised myoclonic jerks. Objects held in the hand may be dropped.[citation needed]
Absence with atonic components. Here there may be a diminution in tone of muscles subserving posture as well as in the limbs leading to dropping of the head, occasionally slumping of the trunk, dropping of the arms, and relaxation of the grip. Rarely tone is sufficiently diminished to cause this person to fall.[citation needed]
Absence with tonic components. Here during the attack tonic muscular contraction may occur, leading to increase in muscle tone which may affect the extensor muscles or the flexor muscles symmetrically or asymmetrically. If the patient is standing, the head may be drawn backward and the trunk may arch. This may lead to retropulsion, which may cause eyelids to twitch rapidly; eyes may jerk upwards or the patients head may rock back and forth slowly, as if nodding.[5][6][7] The head may tonically draw to one or another side.[citation needed]

I had them when I was very young. I never had a trigger so I never knew when I was going to get them or not. It felt like when your sleep and you don’t dream or like randomly being deaf and blind at the same time. My first one was when I was in the 4th grade and it was embarrassing because I didn’t know what happened. The teacher told my parents and from there at least I knew afterwards “I just had a seizure”. I was on medication & then started having them in my sleep. It lasted about 2-3 years and out of nowhere it just stopped happening. Hope this helps anybody or anybody who have kids with this issue.

The first time i fully grasped that my seizures were occurring was during a softball game when i was 11. I was the catcher and the ball went straight past me and the girl on first stole 2 bases on me. I sat out for the rest of the game because the coach was mortified when my dad talked to him (my dad was picking up on the seizures before i did), saying that he doesn’t want to be responsible for any of my injuries. We all know he just didn’t want anybody stealing bases. I never returned. F that guy, and F epilepsy

It sounds weird but It’s actually interesting to me reading other peoples points of views when they have their episodes. I’ve had mine since growing up (23 now). Before I have my episode, The best way to describe mine is simply an overwhelming feeling of fear. You know that feeling you get when watching a scary movie and you know something terrifying is about to happen (like throughout the movie “Paranormal Activity” lol?Mine are basically like that. I stay in that state for a while and I keep repeating to myself “I’m scared”. I think I subconsciously try to submit to it just so the feeling goes away.

Ive had these my whole life. It really sucks. Especially as a kid. Doctor would say I had hundreds a day. And I was constantly checked on. I am now 17 almost 18, still have them but only about 0-3 a day, they say. And I am allowed to drive now as long as I take medication. Its a very misunderstood seizure. At times people would “snap me out of it” and say I “didn’t finish my sentence” or ask if I was paying attention or if I was ok. Growing up, I was called a space case. And I couldnt pick up information at all. It was hard to learn and still is at times. I was struggling so badly that I got held back in 5th grade. Bc the loss of thinking and what is even going on is there. Freshman year I got diagnosed with ADHD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder. And Tics. Its been a mess and at times I wish I had a normal wired brain :/

Coming from someone with epilepsy I can say I'm glad I've only had the convulsing type of seizures only a handful of times and seem to get petit mal seizures a lot more, and guess I'm one of the unlucky few who still get them as an adult(I'm 22). Although getting petit mal seizures more often means that back in school I guess teachers didn't know jack shit about there being other types of seizures because multiple times I had them in class and actually got punished cause they thought I was choosing to not participate in class a lot of the time

@@ABJ4684 personally for me they just happen, like I'll start feeling extremely shaky than the next minute I'm lying down or something and don't remember anything. Since I have a slight speech impediment(honestly as much as I hate it, a stutter to be specific) for a good few hours I sound even worse, like to the point I can't get a syllable out and I got a headache that feels like somebody hit me in the back of the head with a lead pipe. It varies from person to person really. The Petit Mal seizures are where you're actively talking or whatever and than you suddenly just stop talking and have the thousand yard stare. Those last until rather you snap yourself out of it, or someone makes a extremely loud noise. Those are more embarrassing because to people who don't know a damn thing, they rather think you're just staring or choosing to not participate in whats going on

Mine will last a few minutes. I sometimes look like a sleep walker. When I snap out of it sometimes it’ll take a couple of minutes to fully get back to normal. I had one when I was in Uber one time and when I woke up I realized I was in a car and was scared because I didn’t know how I got in there and didn’t know where I was going or where I was and I thought I was getting kidnapped. Why am I in a car with a stranger? How did I get in here? Where is he taking me? When the car stopped I ran out. I didn’t know where I was. I ran to the Target across the street. Then a couple of minutes later my memory came back and I realized I was down the street from my house and that I just ran out of an Uber car. So I called him back and apologized and he picked me back up. I don’t drive anymore. Which of course I shouldn’t. I miss driving. When I first started having them I had one on the freeway before. I know the lord and my friend that passed away saved me by pushing me against the wall and I woke up with a man knocking on my window. If I would have driven a little further, the wall would have ended and I would have driven off the freeway down the hill. My friend passed away right there because he fell asleep driving and drove off the freeway. I know the lord and him saved me by pushing me against the wall before the wall ended.

I still don’t know if I had a seizure or not. But I was in a club (hadn’t been drinking a lot), and was following my friends. Then theres a gap in my memory. When I realised what was happening I was confused, felt like the music was really distance and felt like I was floating. Its never happened again and I can’t explain what happened so I’ll probably never know. But I keep seeing links between chronic migraines (which I get) and seizures… Hoping it was one off (whatever it was) cos I’d really rather not be experience it again, it was horrible.

Hi, I have a question. How can you tell its mild absence seizure and not just zoning out? Im curious because I quite often zone out and stop in the middle of the action (mostly while I'm eating, with the fork halfway haha), I stare blankly into the space and my sight is not focused then. Also, after that I need a few seconds to get back to the conversation because I'm confused. I don't think they are seisures, but its the first time I've come across this term. Also if this is important, I suppose I have adhd and I'll get that checked with the doctor. Please tell me how can you differentiate absence seisures and zoning out/daydreaming

You have to get an EEG done to be sure. For me I have spikes every few minutes and it made me think I was having ADHD too, but really I’m suffering from memory loss because I am having seizures. Definitely the blurry vision is a problem for me and we found it was oscipital lobe seizures. Taking a moment to get back to it due to confusion is like possibly post ectal phase of it. There are many types of seizures. You should also run a panel to look for genes associated with Epilepsy. I have CHD2 which causes every kind of seizure and even rare kinds and symptoms of autism or a lazy eye. It has been like pulling teeth to diagnose me because my seizures aren’t easy to see. But they affect me in my life immensely. Not being able to pay attention is horribly disabilitating.

The other day, I had what might've been a absence seizure, but because I wasn't engaged by anybody I didn't have a 'witness' of what happened. I was eating dinner, and started to feel nauseous. Because nausea is a trigger to a traumatic event for me, I started to hyperventilate. Everything started to feel somewhat fuzzy, and the next thing I know, I realize I was intensely staring at my dinner plate with my head down nearly against my chest.
@aaronwilkins1843
@aaronwilkins1843 Год назад
I am not sure that this was a seizure. Maybe a type of vertigo? 'Fuzzy' doesnt seem to be a word I would relate to epilepsy. You aren't even aware that you are staring during an absence seizure. The clue is in the title - it is a sudden absence of everything.
@Sgbear_
@Sgbear_ Год назад
@@aaronwilkins1843 seizures aren't always related to epilepsy. I'm still not sure how to describe what happened anyway. It was almost like everything went numb, and then when everything 'refocused' I was confused by what had happened. Also, sometimes before seizures, a person might experience an Aura. An Aura is different from person to person. For some it could be a fuzzy or numb feeling, headache, dizzy.. and so on.
@Sgbear_
@Sgbear_ Год назад
@@aaronwilkins1843 also, most of what happened was an educated guess.. when I came-to from whatever DID happen, I was slumped over, staring down at my dinner plate. So although I wasn't literally aware that I was staring, it was more of a guess that I was staring.

@aaronwilkins1843 Год назад

@@Sgbear_ Yes I am epileptic. I know what an aura is. One can definitly feel fuzzy in one of those. But you made it sound like this fuzzy feeling was what you felt within the seizure itself. And like I say in an absence seizure, you wouldn't really be aware of a feeling like this in my experience or generally what I know from others who have them. Have you asked a doctor about the possibility of them being partial seizures? Alot of neurological disorders involve having such types of fit.

I have complex partial seizure. But can this type of seizure attack me? Coz people said sometimes I seems lost while talking or doing activities. I would pause for a moment and stared blankly into space. I frequently got this attack while doing something that requires a high degree of focus like driving for example. My mind like being shut down for a moment then got a reset. The absence sometimes last for up to 5 to 10 seconds or more. Then when I'm back I've already veered off my lane and going onto the opposite lane. After regaining my self back. My mind would be scattered all over and I can't grab what the hell I'm doing right then, I even didn't know where am I and where I'm going to and from. The regain was a little bit slow like a minute or two. Is this what absence seizure looks like?

Gosh it is just a terrible experience to have and go through. Feeling lightheaded could also be a sign of a seizure happening. Side effects also include stiffness of the muscle and sometimes falling asleep after the seizure occurs (based on my experience). Not only that but also loss of consciousness (absence seizure), and shaking of the hands (or other parts of the body)which physical body stress can a cause . This could define that the seizure could be coming from one or multiple area/s of the brain (lobes).

@@lakitacovington7677 Flashing lights are effective in triggering seizures and epileptic seizures. Based on the researches I have done, artificial light (lamps for example) and TVs give out artificial light (the bigger it is, the more artificial light it will give out, and the closer a person is to a TV the more the likelihood is to get a seizure due to excess artificial light the body could handle). Epilepsy could be possibly genetic and from my understanding, it could increase in how often it occurs and how severe it gets and what actions (such as surgery) are done to stop it (believe it or not even a given doctor’s prescribed medication takes some time to get this illness under control (to prevent it from happening). Sleep deprivation is also a well known fact that epilepsy can occur. I am not a doctor, but as an experienced person with having this problem solved, I would definitely reach out to a doctor. As my doctor had even mentioned that electronics are the cause of the illness (for me, and I am sure if you start making effort on stopping your son from going to electronics, it may be better and honestly what I say is just a suggestion, nothing else).

@Mohammad_Ali__
@Mohammad_Ali__ 2 года назад
@@bendyalien is this exercise that causes the problem, are the signs stress related? Do you get frequent sleep deprivation? From what I can tell from your comment temporarily (because I can’t understand what your daily schedule is). I don’t want you to break into your private lifestyle, so please don’t answer the questions. Typically these medical problems are common based upon my research. If you fall unconscious and your body starts shaking for a few seconds to a few seconds, then that’s definitely a few symptoms of it. Mine for example, after surgery were stiffness and the uncontrollable shaking of my hands, at the same time I was conscious. Before the surgery process, I had about zero to three seconds to recognize what had gone and I came unconscious. After what occurred, all my limb muscles were super stiff and I had mild headaches. This was just my experience. Everyone has similar signs of it which could possibly occur to anyone if it is genetic, or if it is related to stress, anxiety, anger, sleep deprivation, tiredness, and especially if it has to be with a person who has been facing too much direct artificial light (lamps for example). If you ever feel like you are having symptoms of it, contact your doctor to see what they can do to eliminate the diagnosis. With bravery comes victory. With fear there are chances of getting panic attacks (which may be also another problem to face; at least from what I am experiencing) which increases the likelihood of epileptic seizures.

I have CHD2 and it causes you to have all the kinds of seizures. I am now just realizing how much it has affected my life because I I don’t have seizures that are noticeable but I get spikes every few minutes and they finally did an eeg and it showed all this going on. It was making me have vision problems on and off because I was having occipital lobe seizures and also these spikes make me not hear people or not notice people are talking to me. Or I just forget right away because It doesn’t get committed to memory. Or I remind myself over and over only to forget. I have to write everything down. I get doing a task and then realize hours have passed and I’m not done yet and I get so frustrated I can’t just speed it up and be as fast as other people. I’ve been told I am slow and it is so discouraging. I live with chronic fatigue too and I finally got to the bottom of that. So apparently I have parasomnia because these spikes are also happening in the night and they wake me up during my deep sleep cycles which I don’t remember but I wake up tired the next day. Or I don’t remember that I ignored my alarm. I get myoclonic seizures too and that is frustrating because I drop things early in the morning like when I’m doing my hair I let go of it suddenly and I have to start over. I’ve thrown a brush into the wall and I’ve burned myself with a flat iron by hitting myself in the head with it. Parasomnia also causes hallucinations upon waking so I have wet the bed before because I thought I walked to the bathroom only to realize it wasn’t real. This stuff is so frustrating because you just can’t control your head and in a way it really causes a disability. I’m glad I finally am trying some medications out to see if I can get back to normal. A lot of this stuff was worsened with puberty or having kids.

I was diagnosed with absence seizures almost four years ago. My parents and I didn’t know what was going on because I would have these episodes where I would space out and feel dizzy. I was getting ready for work one day, and I had one of these episodes. My mom took me to the hospital to get to the bottom of this. They ran blood tests, and other different tests. Everything was normal. Before we left, I had another one of these episodes. The doctors kept me overnight. They ran an EEG, and they found out that I was having seizures. I take Lamotrigine to keep the seizures under control

I have had quite sever tics for almost a year now, which is clearly causing a disruption in my brain’s activity. Over the past month or so, I have noticed that randomly (about 7 times a day) I will see a sudden flash of black in my eyes, almost like I’m blinking, but obviously I’m not blinking. Also, a few times a day, I will start to feel very dizzy, then have difficulty concentrating and stare off into space for around 15 seconds, and sometimes my eyelids will flutter or my eyes will roll back. I’m very scared, I’m only 14, I hope these aren’t seizures but I’m not sure what else it could be :(

I am in an incredibly similar situation. I developed tics and have had them for a few years now. After about six months of having them I experienced all the symptoms you described, minus the blinking thing. I also have much more brain fog afterwards and sometimes the right side of my body locks. It's kinda scary to think it might be a seizure, but at the same time, if that's actually the case, then I know I should seek medical advice to manage it.

Ok ,so since my late 16s I frequently have this problem : Sometimes randomly I have strange feelings which is indescribable, its like things are coming closer, into more focus , deja vu etc when all of a suddem I go blank and there is loss of awareness and connection with the surrounding, I am not conscious or aware of anything its same like when a person sleeps then after few secs I return back from that blankness and then forget what I was doing that particular time and even what I did the entire day, I then try and start recalling so ut takes me good 3 -4 mins to remember everything, sometimes I can control/ ward it off , other times it happens so frequently that by the end I get terrible headaches... Its been happening for 3 years now, then 3-4 days ago I had a full tonic- clonic seizure in the morning for the 1st time... my sister saw it , I was sleeping amd suddenly I began jerking , My lips turned blue, eyes rolled to a side and I bit my tongue.. Of course I was unconscious after this , and don't remember anything of the seizure , my sister described it to me, only I had headache and body ache throughout the day and felt tired and sleepy I did go for an MRI , which came back normal Could someone please tell what is all this..it would be of great help ..

I’m wondering if I have these. My eyes will flutter and I’ll be “zoned out for maybe 5 seconds (short enough for no one to ever notice anything) , I’ll remember what I’m doing and everything after a second or two. Or sometimes it feels like I fainted on the inside and not on the outside. Or maybe my eyes are just weird. I only recently started experiencing this at 20 and I’m 22 now so not sure if it’s even possible, maybe I’m just overreacting to both my eyes twitching idk

Absence seizures are the sharp waves in your brain. Neurologist stick eeg electrodes around your head and monitor your brainwaves. If they see sharp waves, then it could possibly mean you have epilepsy/absence seizures.
@aaronwilkins1843
@aaronwilkins1843 Год назад
@@tyrone6848 TBH EEGs are rubbish and actually cannot categorically diagnose epilepsy or not. Most epileptics actually show no negative or abnormal signs in EEGs, MRIs or CAT scans. Diagnosis is primarily through long term testimony to your doctor.

Absolutely go see a neurologist. If you have one during the day it can be very dangerous. Especially if you’re driving. I lost my license because of my seizures. I had one driving on the freeway before. I think the lord helped me and pushed me to the side of the freeway against the wall and I woke up with someone knocking on my window. If I would have driven further, the wall would have ended and I would have driven off the freeway which is on a hill. I think my friend that passed helped me. He passed away in that same area off the freeway because he fell asleep driving. I think he pushed me against the wall before the wall ended.

I can't tell what is happening to me. I don't know if it's a seizure or almost fainting or some vision problem. I'm hoping maybe you would have some insight if I describe it? Basically I'll be up and doing whatever and suddenly my vision will sort of fade but not like a black tunnel when u get up too fast, it's more like suddenly it feels like I'm in a dream and my vision is warped but I'll still be moving and doing things but it freaks me out so I stop what I'm doing. It lasts like 2-7 seconds and afterwards I'm left feeling anxious and tired. I do not have epilepsy. I am an under eater and should drink more water but idk im pretty healthy

The best way I can describe what an absence seizure feels or looks like to the person having the seizures is this: You know when you get up too quickly after sitting down and your vision goes fuzzy? Yeah, it's like that, but you're not getting up or you could already be standing.
