62 yrs old and only started having temporal lobe seizures 4 yrs ago. Keppra prevents another tonic-clonic but I still had absence seizures. Then, BINGO, with the help of a daily diary I realised sugary foods are the trigger. I don’t consume biscuits puddings or sugary drinks, and absences have gone from 3 a week to one every 8 weeks. I can live with that 😁
For me also I can’t eat anything starchy carb sugary rice , I have been doing ketogenic diet.. lost too much fat so i added some carb now having seizures again. WTH? 😢
@@soniaguiragosian9112I hope you can get back on track with your diet-it must be hard to balance a keto if your body doesn't obtain the right balance of fat. I have never tried keto -is it a simple diet? ❤
@@nickybaker1338 keto is the easiest to follow. No bread, pasta, cakes, chocolate, alcohol, sugary drinks or biscuits Plenty of fruit, veg, nuts, chicken, fish. And for good fats - virgin coconut oil as a spread, for cooking, or just eat a tablespoon a day. And as a bonus - don’t drink caffeine, it triggers seizures too.
My son has suffered with Absence Seizures for 4 years now since he was 3. His seem to always be triggered by illness, when he gets a fever it's more than likely that he will have a seizure. Some of these have lasted well over 10 minutes. He also seems to be largely resistant to medication, having them regardless of meds if he is fighting a virus. We have heard this could be a condition, such as PANS or PANDAS, but finding help is exceptionally difficult for that.
I have juvenile absence epilepsy. Had absence seizures since I was young but went undiagnosed because people thought, as you said, that I was just spacey or daydreaming. Teachers told my parents that I had ADD. At 15 I had my first tonic-clonic seizure, went to the neurologist for an EEG and discovered that my “daydreaming” was actually absence epilepsy. Started on levetiracetam, which looking back now didn’t really work. Still occasionally had tonic-clinic seizures and absences. But I stayed on it for 7 years because I didn’t really know any better. As soon as I switched to Lamotrigine, BAM, instant difference. Tonic-clonic seizures went away completely.
Wow! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I realise that the NHS in UK only tried me on the worst types of medications for Generalised Epilepsy it seems. No wonder none of them worked for me and only made life worse not better. I ended up going for Ketogenic Diet because after 10 years of not getting anywhere with treating my epilepsy I needed some relief. I was literally dying with my breathing being affected too, and nobody would listen. I wish I had known all this years ago.
I am a 56 year old woman. My most recent MRI'S have shown up normal. But my seizures have only gotten worse. The doctors changed my diagnosis to PNES seizures instead of Epilepsy, which I was diagnosed back in 2013 at Strong Memorial University Hospital in Rochester, New York. I now live in Creswell, OR. I have become allergic or intaerarant to most of the seizure medications. So for 4 years I have been on Topiramate and I have had nothing but bad sidaffects from the drug. Now it's to the point where my body is rejecting it and it's just a matter of time before I start having grandma seizures. Then if doctors don't get me onto something else I will go into a coma. It has happened 3 other times when my seizures 1st started getting bad in 2013. When I was a child they were only Absent seizures but back then most kids were ignored. I really need help. I am tired of being passed over.
I had absence seizures as early as 7 yo in 2nd grade. My teacher told my parents that I was daydreaming in class and they were very upset. Third grade, I spent a week in the hospital. I ran a very high fever and puked late at night so my parents gave me medicine and a glass of 7UP (common remedy in the 80s). Suddenly, the glass tipped over and I was unresponsive. So they called an ambulance, my Mom stayed with me and my Dad followed in his Buick LeSabre. I tried to tell my Mom that I was too scared to go to the hospital and I wanted to go to the doctor instead but I couldn’t utter a word. The Dr did a CAT scan of my head and gave me Tegretol which made me drowsy, and I spent a week in the hospital. My parents took me out to McDonald’s afterwards. The seizures continued through 4th grade, which I failed miserably (6 Fs and a C in the first quarter). I improved by the end of the year but it wasn’t enough. I had another episode that year but I don’t remember it as much.
Great video! When I was in Kindergarten, my teachers would complain that I would stare out the window a lot. I think I was also hyper or anxious in class. The story my Mother told me was I couldn’t return to school until I was put on Ritalin. I was diagnosed as having ADHD. My Mom said all the he doctor had me do was raise my arms (as a neurologist does) and he ask d me to shake them??? She said,” right away, he diagnosed you as having ADHD!” She also said I was on Ritalin right away and I soon started to act like a, “zombie.” I wouldn’t pick up my fork to eat. I wouldn’t answer anyone- like I was as brain dead. So, my parents took me out of that school and we went to a private school. Where I thrived! I think I had seizures when I was little!
@@GodIlove Hi. I am now 43. I found out I had epilepsy when I was 16. There was a period of about 20 years my college years, till after I had children where I had zero seizures. Now- In 2022, they came back, I just had the RNS put in this year. I still need my doctors to tweak the device, until it decides to work with my seizures. I’ve had had 2 TC’s and myoclonic jerks have been increased. Very sensitive to lights and sounds.
My epilepsy is unknown and have had it since a child at six over 30 plus years now no matter what your age is its hell at its worse. I'm currently waiting for the VNS.
@@Addy2023X ok. I only mentioned it coz my doc had told I’d have to live with 3 episodes a week. An old lady on a train told me she was cured after she stopped eating sugary mints all day. So I tried it and had a profound improvement. Best wishes 👍
@@Sydopath it depends on the person who she/he is on what works for them. My tablets I'm on have not helped I've been on many I lost count. Waiting for the VNS op now on the waiting list.
I have had epileptic absence seizures before I was diagnosed with epilepsy. I do have a VNS. Tonic clonic seizure is under control by staying away from stress. Small absence seizures happen randomly.
I have a question that no one has been able to answer. Do the absence seizures usually go away as the child matures into a teenager EVEN IF they do NOT take medication? (or is it only if they take medication?) Thank you
Hi Dr. Danoun I started having seizures when I was 17 years old. I had my first seizure when my menstrual period started. Can I still have absence seizures at 56 years old? I take Lacosamide 200mg and Keppra. I have a vegal nerve stimulator it didn't help me or my meds. I read where you said a magnesium deficiency or a Kertoenic deit or Atkins diet might help. Vitamins for seizures Vitamin D 500-2000iu, Folic Acid 1-4mg, Vitamin D6 pyridoxine, Omega 3 fish oil, CBD oil. I take Vitamin D because I was anemic my menstrual used to stay on for 6 months straight. I have tried the CBD oil. I think that has helped me. I have seizures every so often. I will go a few days then I will have one. Do you think I can stop them now. When I have a aura I will feel like I'm looking outside my body and my hands will shake and my heart will start beating fast my legs jump sometimes. Then I go lay down and plug my ears cover up eyes with a mask and make sure it's dark in my room where I can't see or hear anything. Then I will lay down on my bed and or go take a nap. Then after I lay there for awhile or take a nap I will get up I feel fine like everything is normal. Let me know what you think.
63 yrs old. Ive had absence seizures for the last year. Cts, mris, bloodwork, nerve tests. I have very small lytic lesions on the skull and Peripheral Neuropathy, but no answers for the seizures. Im in limbo until someone figures it out.
I've dealt with absence seizures since I was 11, 12 and colonic tonic seizures too and 32 years old now. My absence seizures are so bad that once I come out of it I'm in pain. Also, sometimes I throw up from having it.
I am 1 of those who would be a great challenge. With allergies and resistance and I have focal, local, Tonic Colonic seizures.. Colonic so not many people want to even try to take my case and most just say I'm making it up .😪
My son is a 14 year old autistic young man and has global developmental delay, he was recently diagnosed with absence seizures and had a EEG done he was then put on ethosuximide however this caused him to have hallucinations and become very depressed and he started getting very upset emotionally and said he wants to end his life so we took him down the hospital where the decision to ween him off the medication completely was taken so currently he is not on medication, yesterday I took him on a trip to see his favourite trains at York railway museum and walking back to the car he seemed to be having a seizure whilst walking, I managed to get his attention and asked him what I said and he didn’t remember, this happened again and then he fell over, I am quite shocked he could be possibly having a seizure whilst walking, we are not really sure what our next move meditation wise is going to be and I was wondering if a video of autism and absence seizure would be possibly on you channel and if this type of seizure would affect a autistic child differently and what medication might be more effective? Many thanks
Same here. Came to this video cause I have a 10yr old nephew with autism. While video chatting with him he looked off, his eyeballs were twitching really fast and he was like chewing on his tongue with partially out. I called his name 4 times. He snapped out and answered on the 5th call of his name. It was really fast. Didn't last long, but had me wondering, did he just have a seizure or is that his autism??? I've never met him in person. Only over the phone so I'm not sure if that is regular autism behaviour. So I alerted my sister who is around him n she said they'll look into it. Had a friend whose daughter st 2 was diagnosed with it and she would stare off just like that. So when I saw it, I got alarmed but can't be sure I'm making something out of nothing cause, no videos on if this is normal in autism. I'm very ignorant about it all. My nephew only eats pizza too which nutritionally can't be good. Can't wait to meet him and pray the Lord guides me in interacting with him and helping him grow and be strong. I want to help support my brother with him but I'm...don't want to say scared...maybe nervous or anxious. Supposed to get to see him next year and it's like...how will he react to me? Do I treat him like the other kids? Etc, etc. Which I know will be answered as we spend time together so...I try not to even worry about it now.
Would just like to add that they tried to get him to eat other things but he won't. Only pizza. So I'm like, okay, when he comes to visit, I'm just going to male all kinds of different pizza n maybe try a healthy one with more veggies to diversify his eating a lil but my brother said that it probably wouldn't work. He doesn't like new or different. Just what he knows. Any suggestions about his eating?
My daughter has been diagnosed with absense seizure August 2023 she was 9.5 years. She started with Lamictal 50 per day then 100 / day she would be ok for 2 weeks and then she starts getting seizures again. We then introduced Depakine in March 2024 at 400 mg per day then 1000/ day. Her seizures went better in frequency but still not to zero . Finally she moved to now Depakine 1000 / day+ Lamictal 200 / day around 10 days ago. 7 days later her seizures frequency started increasing again. How long does it take for Lamictal to work. She plays artistic gymnastics and that’s the only time she can say that she gets seizures when she misses some moves. No one else notices it -/ it’s a few seconds. We did the blood work and the theuraptic level for Depakine is 87.5
I'm an adult with epilepsy, and I zone out alot lol I do take meds for my seizures but I read that absence epilepsy can still be a thing even with meds
Is it normal for your lips to turn purple when you have an absence seizures? My son’s lips turn purple it’ll last for about 30 seconds, sometimes it has led to to a full blown seizure later in the day. What can I do to better help him. He is on medication but I feel that it’s not helping him. Is there maybe like vitamins or herbal teas or maybe foods he can avoid?
I have a child who is diagnosed with epilepsy. It is unlikely for him to jerk but he sleeps and do not work up for a very long time. It also affect his school life. Im very stressed out.
I used to get seizure in a way i even walk and talk with people by answering them unproperly but i don't remember anything happened. I noticed my grandson who is 5 months while in the cars seat, having 3 staring episodes when we opened the door to get him out and a tree with leaves was over head. The staring would last about 5 seconds each. The rest of his body was completely still. He normally moves his legs and arms very frequently. Should we be concerned?
Can febrile seizures lead to absense seizures? My daughter has had about 10 tonic clonic seizures over 4 years. Dr say she'll grow out of them. Her school rang one day to say she'd had a seizure but it was an absense one. She was staring. We've not seen it nor has it happened again. She's had EEG years ago. Not sure what's going on. She has been referred back to her consultant.
Thank you Dr,BarakAllah fikum,I send you an email regarding my daughter, plus some of the test results ,she has been taking sodium Valparate but it has not been helping ,she is having the exact things your talking about except for her she can’t even talk and she is always eating both her hands like she is obsessed with eating them, she developed many things I can’t even try ,kindly help ,love your Chanel ,Abdallah from Uganda 🇺🇬 Africa
Nobody in my family has epilepsy I was 3 months premature I was born October 16 1984 I and was emergency flown to a hospital in Colorado for 6 months of many surgeries and at 6 years old I started having series and I am still having peti mal seizures and am taking depikote and have been doing pretty well but some still break through I am currently 39 years old.
Dr. My son’s (9y/o) seizures are tonic clonic ONLY DURING SLEEPTIME, and he has micro seizures (he says he feels heavy in his body and is conscious all the time) that last about 10 secs. Why are the complete seizures happening only during sleeping? The 3 day EEG didn’t capture ANY epileptic waves! He didn’t had complete episodes during the study but he did have micro events and EEG says nothing. What type of epilepsy could be? Thank you! Our Dr only prescribed Keppra and didn’t explain anything, I’m so confused☹️

Hey everyone, my girlfriend said I had an absence seizure. I don’t have epilepsy, but I do have ADHD, and anxiety and autism. My neighbor is a nurse and we live near a fire department or two. Does this mean that I have epilepsy?
My 5 year old is showing signs of having absent seizures. She's also in the process of getting tested for being artistic and lower limb dyspraxia, we are really concerned and trying to get as much help as we can but we are still unsure. They are definitely absent seizures. What should we do. We have a quite a lot of videos of having them but we are unsure how to go about getting the help she needs

Hi, my daughter has muscle weakness especially on her right side and she struggles to walk, but we have now noticed a lot of body tremors mainly when she is tired and trying to do something and she rolls her eyes back and has slurred speech when she is tired, could this be anything related to some form of epilepsy? She will be having an EEG next week but all other tests I.e. mri scans, blood tests and ct scans have come back normal. Thank you.
Bummer he didn't give you an answer to your question!! Not helpful to just send a heart emoji. I feel bad for you. I wish he would've answered your question because it would help me too!! Maybe re-post your question and ask if he would please give you some advice rather than just an emoji which doesn't tell you anything.
Can a person have an absence seizure with movement? I had childhood absence Epilepsy. My daughter has just been diagnosed with Primary generalised Epilepsy. She is 18 but special needs. She normally has myclonic jerks which the dr said are seizures and eeg confirmed, she is aware during these seizures though. They also said she has absence seizures but I have not seen it. Tonight she had the worst looking myclonic seizure that I have seen her have which was centralized in face movement it was a few seconds but afterwards she had no idea this happened so was blank or absent for those seconds. The movement looks almost like a weird hiccup but not from the abdomen
A child that has Agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC), that does not speak or chew well has to eat aid foods Is this medication appropriate to mention to the doctor?
Hello - my daughter is having a seizure that she loses control for 3 seconds and then she starts doing the same she was doing ? Does this mean she has absence seizure ?
Hi Doctor thanks for the video. My cousin takes Kepra for her seizures but her memory and focus is not as sharp is there any vitamin she can take? Please let me know Thanks
Hi, I had viral Encephalitis 37 year's ago. I had eeg at time but there wasn't anything picked up at the time. Ive read recently that around 60 percent of encephalitis patients have epilepsy. What is the likelihood of having epilepsy, that hasn't been picked up?
But in your case since it's decades ago and you didn't have any sequelae after your treatment with acyclovir, there shouldn't be any issue but a visit to a neurologist is better.
My understanding, is is there were no medical tests for sequelae for Encephalitis available, back in the 80's and late 90's. They just let you out of the hospital, after they thought you were right.
As long as i remember. I will literally stop and just stare. This happens for a few seconds. I have never counted how many times i do this stare in a day
Hi, my child is 5 yrs old and he has seizures issue since the last one year. In the last one year he went through 8-10 seizures. All these episodes were during sleep/just after sleep. Can you help to understand the name of this seizure?
Hi Doctor my partner is on Keppra and big seizures are well controlled. I have noticed approx 4 absent seizures per week. Any idea why this is happening?
Hard to tell without evaluating the patient.. There is a whole video on aura you can review.. Consults are available as well.. Details in the first comment
Dr., I have Left Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. It began when an inoperable abbess left an infarction. I experience blank outs but not when I’m concentrating on something. I also have times when all of my muscles become very tense. Can that tenseness be part of my Epilepsy?? I don’t notice it coming on. When I recognize it I’m already very tense; mostly ether arms and hands.
Is it possible to appear in toddlers? My son is almost 2, not speaking yet, and I noticed he stares into space quite often. Even when I wave my hand in front of his face it takes him a good amount of time to react.
