Derinkuyu Underground City is located in the homonymous Derinkuyu district in Nevşehir Province, Turkey.......It was opened for visitors as of 1969 and to date, only ten percent of the underground city is accessible for tourists. Its eight floors extend at a depth of approximately 85m.
The underground city at Derinkuyu has all the usual amenities found in other underground complexes across Cappadocia, such as wine and oil presses, stables, cellars, storage rooms, refectories, and chapels. Unique to the Derinkuyu complex and located on the second floor is a spacious room with a barrel vaulted ceiling. It has been reported that this room was used as a religious school and the rooms to the left were studies. Between the third and fourth levels is a vertical staircase. This passage way leads to a cruciform church on the lowest level.
The large 55m ventilation shaft appears to have been used as a well. The shaft also provided water to both the villagers above and, if the outside world was not accessible, to those in hiding.

What an incredible find! To think a whole civilization was able to exist underground, almost completely self-sufficient. They would need to plant and harvest food above ground for themselves and their animals. A marvelous find!

I visited this place last June and what an awesome place this is. It leaves you filled with so many questions and is such a mysterious place. I was overwhelmed by the sheer size of it and that was only the half I was allowed to see! I would highly recommend a visit for anyone interested in or researching ancient civilizations. My opinion is that these places were built with help from higher beings, so grab those history books, tear them up and start again, this time with the fact and not fiction

We can learn a lot fom our ancestors. they did all this w/o the 'benefit' of 'modern' technology. and did it better.
@SpazzyMcGee1337
@SpazzyMcGee1337 10 лет назад
I don't see anything here that couldn't be done as well if not better today. There simply isn't a strong enough incentive to build such structures today,
@GerryBuck
@GerryBuck 10 лет назад
SpazzyMcGee1337 Doubful they could build anythig like this today. Todays 'engineers' like to take too many short cuts as does the constructin industry. This was done WITH OUT all the modern technology. Stew on that.
@SpazzyMcGee1337
@SpazzyMcGee1337 10 лет назад
Gerry Buck You said that we couldn't do it as well today WITH modern technology. That is incorrect. Furthermore, "shortcuts" are good so long as the design still meets specifications. An engineer does not ask what can be added to a design. An engineer asks what can be taken away.

SpazzyMcGee1337 totally agree with you ,in fact the machines we have now would do this in double the size in a year .The stone cutting machinery we have is awesome ,i saw some being used in Scotland it just makes tunnels in seconds .It was so cool and just eats stone even granite .THE hole must have been about three metres high but if they want it bigger they just recut above or below .It was noisy but so cool to see working .It was sort of like all these metal rotating teeth that just ate through the hillside into the rock never seen anything like till then .The giant drill was on two low loaders when it was going to the site epic .

Actually, they had air shafts-one to take out the smoke and foul air and another to bring in fresh air from above-in all of these underground cities. I went down to the 5th level and the air down there was perfectly fresh and breathable. It really is an amazing place.

That's so right! I've seen the a very long documentary series that included coral castle & how they thought it was built. The guy used magnets & sound vibrations to alter the field round an object or stone & it created, like you said a weightless effect on the stone, making it easy to move. He had to move the Coral Castle somewhere else & a big truck came & he asked the driver to leave so he could put the rocks on the truck. The man came back in like 30-40mis & it was all done! Just Incredible!

Went there in 1975.There was only a wooden hut and a guy sitting by a stove to keep warm,he sold us a ticket and down we went into this hole.They said they had managed to get down some 9 levels but were still excavating.We only were allowed down about half that.I remember a small room with a cross carved in the wall at one end.They said this was a christian chapel,and the place was inhabted by christians that had been driven out of the Holy Land.

Keep in mind that ancient peoples were just as intelligent as we are today, who's to say what technology they had that we don't know about? These people were not simpletons, and jumping to the conclusion of ALIENZ isn't going to truly explain anything. This is an amazing feat of engineering and design, and should be appreciated as such. :D

The story is that in this violent universe, once in a few thousand years, we get a close passover of a dreaded planet (Wormwood?). So people who have recourse to underground shelters stand a better chance than most of their contemporaries exposed in the above ground. So there is much to say about shelters built into the side of mountains that weathered previous close passing of the Red Death Star.

Strange is that there are a lot of such underground citys in the region until now they found 36 places and the greater ones are connected to each other. For example from Derinkuyu leads a tunnel 10 kilometers to Kaymakli. It was not difficult to dig rooms and corridors in the soft Tuffstone with the help of obsidian which are very often there. But why they did it is not explained.

Every major city in the past had its undergroung parts. They were necessary even for just mundane things like storing the food cause there weren't any refrigirators. There are catacombs in Singidunum(modern Belgrade), Naisus(Niš), Novi Sad and other cities.

I believe if there aren't there should be. Live underground with a constant temp of 54*. That's easy to heat, easy to cool, sound proof, bomb proof, radiation proof(not sure), great for food storage without a fridge, it won't burn down..... You can grow crops on the surface and mushrooms inside. Sounds great
