Hello and welcome! I'm Betty Franks and I create my vision of abstract fields of flowers using acrylic paints and pencils (and other mark-making tools). I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and travel a couple of times a year to Preko, Croatia (where my parents live). I started painting in 2012 and focused on abstract art in the summer of 2015. 🌼 I only discovered I could paint 5 years ago. I did hyper realistic animal portraits. After losing my husband to cancer in 2020 I just couldn’t/didn’t sit down to paint. Last week I came across your RU-vid channel. I rushed out to buy acrylics and thoroughly enjoyed letting go without having to concentrate or have the pressure of it having to be prefect. Thank you for the inspiration to put brush to canvas again. I’m loving abstract art. 😊

I lost my husband in 2022 and shut my the door to my art room! For the longest time I just couldn’t go in there. I came across your videos and felt the urge to paint again. Slowly I was able to go back in and do a clean up and take inventory on what will needed to start again. Found I have more canvas than I thought I had. Paints are good to go but may purchase some of those beautiful colors you use! Thank you for sharing all that you do. It definitely woke something up in me!

🌼I used to create in acrylics, often very large, but got a job 6 yrs ago that didn’t allow for any time to be creative. About 2 years ago, I was so desperate for a creative outlet I started playing with watercolor. I could pack a little bag with a travel palette, a bottle of water and plastic cup, find a secluded spot on the upper floor of the library and paint at lunch. In July, after 6 years in the job, getting through a power change, the sale of the company and loss of coworkers through layoffs and furloughs in the pandemic, I ‘rage quit’-resigned on a Zoom call, immediately emailed my resignation effective immediately, and have poured myself into painting and illustrating. This is all to say your video has inspired me to pick up acrylics again on a some small (12”x12”) canvases, and carry the fun I found in watercolor back to acrylics. Thank you, Betty, for the inspiration to do it.

Enjoyed watching your process on this small piece... I tend to work large and want to get more comfortable with working small. As well, so good to hear you say that when you're busy sometimes it's hard to get the studio time in. I worry when I can't find the time/energy for my studio work, but feel like I'm getting better at giving myself permission to step away. Thank you!

Hi Elizabeth! Don't be hard on yourself if you can't get to the studio. I truly believe that we are creative all day long, every day. We're creative in different ways. I have only painted in oil and mainly portraits and still life till now. But u have inspired me to try acrylic and abstracts after this. Acrylic - because oil takes too long to dry unless I add quickeners or else we end up with muddy colors and abstract- because the colors and shapes and the creating process look so liberating. Have just discovered your channel - this is so good thank you!!! Can you please explain why you don't need to wait for your paint to dry before adding different colours?

So glad you found me and my art! The main reason it looks like I don't wait for paint to dry is because I'm using thin layers of paint and they're drying pretty quickly--enough to be able to move on. If it's not dry, I usually use my heating tool or hair dryer to speed up the drying time. Thanks for watching!
