I'm back out shooting some coastal abstract photography from the wonderful Spittal Beach in the 2nd part of my Northumberland trip. Harsh light and blue skies dictated I change my original plans, which wasn't a problem as I ended up thoroughly enjoying my morning here.

First time I’ve come across your videos and so glad I did, albeit very late. I’ve only just come back to photography and was really struggling with what to concentrate on. Having the beautiful gower coast and 18 beaches on my doorstep is the ideal place to start doing this. I wasn’t interested in landscapes etc but this opens a whole new world, thank you very much 👍

Intimate landscapes are really hard, and it is a real skill to get right. I've enjoyed this 2 part series so far and hope that it inspires other landscapers to give it a go. One thing I find very useful in situations like that which you found yourself is a large plain white umbrella - casts a soft diffuse shadow over the subject and really helps to control those harsh shadows. Yes, you look a bit of a prat using it, and yes it is another bit of kit to carry but often I think it is worth it. All the best sir.

I really enjoyed this video Stuart, as I did with the one you did on the Cumbria coast. I like the intimate shots, reminds me of the type of work done by David Ward. At one point I shouted at the video as I spotted a shot as you were panning the camera. Good to hear how much you enjoyed yourself, although I did have a wry smile knowing the football result at the end....I'm a bitter blue! Thanks for the video, hope to see more intimate coastal work in the future.

Stuart great to watch this and to see you enjoying yourself in your endeavors. Yes forget the scruffy rule of thirds and think composition tools. You're looking for all sorts, lines of flow, triangulation, circles, diagonals, arabesque, colour contrasts, and mass. There is a large amount of work on that beach alone

Hi Stuart I was in Northumberland the same week that you were there and although it was great weather for the holiday it was poor for landscape photography, as my wife said 'You're never happy 😁' I also visited Spittal Beach to photograph the patterns in the rocks I really enjoyed it but found the harsh light very challenging with the shadows cast. Definitely a location to return on a cloudier day. Another great vlog

Really enjoyed this Stu. Like you, I don't do much of this but it looks really enjoyable. Its interesting that we tend to fall back on this style of photography when conditions aren't ideal but it really should stand up on its own merits. Whilst you mention you don't need to use standard 'rules' having a good knowledge of composition seems really important to help the image flow
@StuartMcGlennon
@StuartMcGlennon 3 года назад
Cheers Jamie yeah you’re absolutely right it’s too often a fall back for many when you should really make plans to shoot this whether it’s harsh light or not, I know I will be in the future. What’s interesting when I’m doing this is although subconsciously you’re aware of compositional elements my first instinct is looking for complimentary colour more than anything else
@ianpinion4997
@ianpinion4997 3 года назад
Some cracking images there, David...sorry I mean Stuart. You found some gems and was most certainly worth the effort. However, I get the impression though that when there's a plethora of opportunities, some being better than others, it must be a difficult task finding and just focusing on the best ones? Is it easy to become distracted by other potential opportunities that you spot out the corner of your eye?
@StuartMcGlennon
@StuartMcGlennon 3 года назад
Cheers Ian it can be a little overwhelming figuring out the bits you want to use as the possibilities are literally endless once you start ‘seeing’ them. What’s great is because it’s not light dependent you can take your time and really refine what you’re doing.

This type of photography is definitely for me , absolutely love these images . Did you let Photoshop merge the focus stack or did you do it Manually ?
@StuartMcGlennon
@StuartMcGlennon 3 года назад
Hi Andrew normally with standard focus stacks (vista scene focused foreground/mid/background) I normally manually do them as sometimes PS makes a pigs ear of them though with these given there was so many frames (10+) I let PS do it

Beautiful pics ! Was it really necessery to stack that many images at f10 , since it was almost plain surface ?
@StuartMcGlennon
@StuartMcGlennon 3 года назад
Thanks very much - I think your perhaps mistaken none of the stacked images had the aperture value listed against them, for reference though they were shot at F6.3, and yes because I’m not shooting directly downwards certain areas of the image were out of focus hence the need to focus stack. Two of the images shown didn’t require stacking which was mentioned 👍

I like these kinds of unique images much better than those big boring landscape images that everybody has. That place is a gold mine for intimate landscape images that nobody else has only you. The best thing about these kinds of photographs, you don't need to explain them like those cliche landscapes, seascapes.
@StuartMcGlennon
@StuartMcGlennon 3 года назад
Thanks I think all types/genres have their place though this type of photography (for me personally anyway) undoubtedly presents more challenges than perhaps the vista stuff where the shots are perhaps a bit more obvious. I try to be as rounded a photographer as possible as there’s always something you can take from different genres and approaches and apply them in other areas

Would images like this sell in the gallery? I'm afraid it leaves me cold & not something I would shoot or buy as a framed print for the wall. A macro lens is never going to be in my bag. I know many like it but again it is personal choice. Time to go home rest them legs & exercise your vocal cords shouting at the football instead Stuart.
@StuartMcGlennon
@StuartMcGlennon 3 года назад
No they’d not sell in the gallery, certainly not in a tourist market as they don’t have mass appeal and are unlikely to connect with the viewer on a personal level. However when I have trips like this I’m only really shooting for myself so it’s not a consideration for me. Like everything though in photography everyone has vastly different tastes etc and you only ever have to please yourself 👍
@shanebrennan7856
@shanebrennan7856 3 года назад
They might not sell in a gallery but I think they are incredibly visually appealing Stuart. Love the play of the water in one and the warm orange against the cool blue in another. Also love that quote about no such thing as bad light just the wrong subject. I always learn something from your videos and would love to hear more about your compositional thought process. You have a great eye for detail in terms of where to place each element in the scene. Just seeing that alone has taught me to be more thoughtful in approaching the scene. Great lessons for a beginner to observe, thanks.
