I may be wrong about this but I think persimmons have the greatest sugar content of any fruit. Interesting that they’re your favorite, fig boss.

Plant some extra for the squirrels. It’s a native mammal. Most state laws also state that you can only kill small (native) mammals on your property during the appropriate season (not with poison or snares) unless you have a permit to do so outside of the season.

My tree got some fungal infection. All new leaves got black spots and curls.Used toget about 150 to 200 fruits.But this year not even one fruit on the tree. What should I do?It is a big tree about 12 yearold.I appreciate your advice

i have asian persimmon tree took 5/6 years for it to hold its fruit , delious fruit but the squierels love them to nice video Ross ,surprised you can get those verietys to get threw the winter.

I had a battle with squirrels myself. I used a live trap and relocated them. I was up to nine last season, a bit less this year. I definitely understand how you feel.

Ross, Another example of your talent/ability to get some major results with less than optimum conditions....partial shade competition form trees, etc. but with good fruit set/harvest on a wide variety of species. What’s you’re opinion on the chocolate persimmon

Do you know how big(width and height) Celebrity gets adult?smaller than PROC? It seems,you plant your persimmons very close,something like 6feet or less,altough they supposed to gros 15-20feet circle. I get we can closer ,but isn't it a little bit too much close? Just wondering how crazy I can go with my own spacing

Why don't you consolidate and graft more onto a smaller number of trees to open up more light?

I found a nice persimmon tree this week. It was on the edge of a parking lot where I was working. There was lots of fruit dropping and perfectly ripe. I have a Japanese Fuyo one but it didn't give me any fruit this year for some reason. It had a lot of buds and fruit but they all fell off. I haven't seen natives that big before!!

I love persimmons- astringent and non-astringent. Though, I like the non-astringent more because we don't need to wait for them to ripe to enjoy. I've grown 8 non-astringent varieties and 2 astringent varieties.

Which one does produce the biggest fruit!

This trap is one of the best investments we made this year. My tomato, blackberry & fig crops were finally enjoyed by us, rather than those furry rodents! 🐿

Have two of the same squirrel trap as you. One word of warning is that it instantly kills only about 80-90% of the time. So I would check it frequently, especially in the morning, and be prepared to have to take additional measures to finish the job. It really is my least favorite part of growing fruit but realistically you can't grow fruit to full ripeness in suburbia unless you also control the local squirrel overpopulation.

About how much sun does your Prok get, and at what times of the day, please? I don't have space in full sun for a large tree. Thanks!

The only thing that has stopped me from jumping head first into growing persimmons is the many varieties and how the effect each other (pollination variants/seed-setting). I can't get over this stupid feeling that I still don't know enough to choose an optimal collection and not choose one that might 'ruin' others (for example I saw a vid from a seattle grower comparing pollinated vs unpollinated coffeecake persimmon - the unpollinated one was basically a seedless hachiya whereas the pollinated one, while slightly better tasting, had annoyingly large seeds that I would consider not worth it). It's a bit confusing.

You don’t have to overwinter the Fuyu? I don’t think you’re that far from me, I’m in Nj 6b. I’m going to try a Fuyu and thinking about planting in-ground and overwintering it.

Gosh your persimmon trees look great no fungal infections. In my area they get black spots all over the leaves. I wonder if being in a suburban area helps? That prok is insanely big it looks like an asian.

Anyone have experience using cats to control those pesky rodents?
