Roseanne Bauman offers a definition of forgiveness, looks at an example of forgiveness from the Bible, and speaks about her own story of forgiveness. Forgiveness requires a commitment to not dwell on the injury mentally, to not bring it up and accuse the other person with it ever again, and to not gossip about it. This commitment must be chosen over and over again.

Thank you for your courage and openness to discuss all of this publicly. This willingness means much to others who have suffered abuse. No discussion of the issue, the darkness surrounding it, and the absence of confrontation all contribute to continued abuse happening to others. Only a person who has suffered deeply and has struggled long and hard can communicate effectively as you have in this episode. I bless your willingness to open your deeply personal story to the larger community who can benefit from all that you have learned through this difficult experience. My highest respect to you!

When I said I had no part in setting consequences, I meant that I spoke up about the abuse, told the truth to protect others (in court), and then allowed the courts to set criminal charges and the church to set church discipline. Ultimately God sets consequences for sin. Justice is hard to define when the offense cannot be undone. What is justice? Who decides? I did not determine what "justice" would look like for my abuser. I come from a non-resistant mindset which is a much larger discussion and impacts many areas of my theology including this one.
