In this one, I drag my riding mower out of the corner and give it some attention after abusing it for the last several years. No oil changes, no maintenance, and nothing but abuse. I can't understand why she's so grumpy!
I might have your hard start solution. Saw a tip that worked on my YTS 4000. The choke cable housing is adjusted wrong from the factory such that you never have full choke. TRY THIS: Push your throttle/choke lever to full choke. Then loosen the choke cable clamp located under the carb to the right with a Torx bit (20 size i think). Push the cable housing as far to the left under the clamp as you can (will probably go about an quarter to half inch more). Retighten the clamp. You should now have full choke when you push the throttle leaver all the way forward. Mine starts right away now. Good luck with yours!
That's what was wrong with mine too adjust the throttle cable to full choke also try and put some seafoam in the fuel tank that can clear them chokers that get in the fuel system from time to time.
Fantastic - between you and Average Joe's (thanks for sharing a video with the EXACT sound I've had from my YS4500) I've got my mower up and running again. It turns out that choke issue was my problem too. Cheers gents!!
Believe you me you have explained it more than a lot of the post and you have helped me get my mower up and running again I can’t thank you enough for your expertise it this matter and I have followed and thumbs up you I will always follow and I will pass it on to as many people with mower issues guaranteed thanks again Zeek Wtg
Excellent precise video that describes the problems w 2000 3000 4000 models.but it guarantees we will do what Granpa does.give it away w a smile while we ride on the new crappie lawn mower wondering who in the family will get this one2 yrs down the road.
Appreciate it. I actually did end up giving it away. My buddy at work needed one and it was mostly just in the way being ignored yet again so I sent it to a new home.
Great step by step diagnostic video. 99.9999999% of the time on lawn equipment It’s always the damn carburetor. I hate them just as much and never look forward to cleaning carbs! Eating carbs yes! Cleaning carbs no!
Lmao!! You're right. If it has a carb, it's always the carb. And I agree, eating carbs, most definitely. Cleaning carbs, can a brother get one with a clean carb? Just one! Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching!
At least you admit abusing , or more correctly neglecting, the gift he gave you. Maybe he should donate the next few to some neighborhood kids that can make money mowing lawns? Haha This was enjoyable to watch. Glad you got it worked out. Hope you get it to someone that won’t neglect it again… haha
Yeah. I'm slack. I usually do end up giving them away or taking parts off of them. He buys a new one every couple of years for absolutely no reason and I run out of space. In my "sulky" video, most of those parts are off the last one he gave me.
Thanks brother. I appreciate it. If you look through the comments, Michael Alford offered a pretty awesome tip too. Might wind up being your issue. Good luck and thanks for watching!
I have a Craftsman T110 doing just now started doing the same thing, I have changed the oil, air filter, spark plug, battery, fuse, gas filter and it still will not crank, ready to sell it!
I had a John Deere with B&S 23 hp engine, similar issue it was the fuel pump, Replaced it and it started better, Another time the local fixit place said the tank inlet was stopped up, They cleaned the tank and it started right up,
Best guess is “Standard” because mine came with no attachments. The GT is Garden Tractor. The LT is Lawn tractor. It’s all about how beefy the frame is. Garden Tractors are the heaviest. Lawn tractors(or possibly “light”) are just for grass. My Yts can handle snow plowing and light pulling big old Buiks out of the Garage with brakes rusted shut. 😂 had the drag marks to show for it. Had mine for over 15 yrs and only have had to fix a lost 😡 in in the steering shaft and deck spindles.(some dipstick left rope in n the yard)
Gravely puts out a great commercial 260 Z > If you buy one. Be SURE NOT! TO GET ONE WITH THE KAWASUCKY ENGINE. The valves burn out with in 2 years! Mine had the 25 hp Kawasucky engine They work good for only 2 years. So i replaced it with a 29 hp Briggs engine. SHES A BEAST
THE ULTIMATE SECRET...install a shut-off valve into the 1/4" fuel line, either before or after the fuel filter. OPERATION: When shutting down the mower after each use, do not turn off the ignition key. Leave the key on. Instead, to shut the mower off, turn off the shut-off valve on the fuel line. The engine will run until ALL of the gas has been used up within the carburator - and the engine will die. Now turn off the ignition key. EXPLANATION: Relying on the anti backfire/fuel solenoid on the carburator is the big problem. Gunked up gas always causes the solenoid to stick in the open or closed position. Gas that is left within the carburator will clog it up in just a few days. I have an old 1952 8n Ford Tractor. It originally came a gas shut-off valve. This is the old and superior design that works without causing problems. I struggled for years with these stupid problems. Each year, in October, I turn off my Craftsman & Cub Cadet mowers using this shut-off valve on the fuel line. Then, in March of the next year -- I turn-on the Shut-off valve -- and all the mowers start right up on the same gas used previously in the tank. The old farm tractors hold the secret. Today's engineers have bad ideas that cause stupid problems. Install fuel shut-off valves on every small engine that you have. They only cost a few dollars.
I bought a used 26 hp Craftsman that had been sitting for 3 years and this part was exactly why it would not start. Took it out, sprayed it with carb cleaner and tada!
I just want to say, my mower won’t start. Put a new motor in it because it imploded. Was mowing, and got off the seat to love a branch and it died. Now won’t start. However, you are so hilarious! I havnt even finished the video. Haven’t ate spam or had you send me your man card. I’m laughing my ass off.
I appreciate the kind words. I often try to laugh to keep from crying. I made several copies of the man card as I have to give it up several times a day. Thanks for taking the time to watch. I really appreciate it.
The YT300 with Kohler SV620-3210 has no fuel pump. It's a twin cam and won't start. Not getting fuel. Has Spark and I can spary carb cleaner or gas into the carb and bbn it will start foe a second. The fuel bowl has fuel. Not getting fuel to the cylinder head. What's Wrong ?. What am I missing
Before I ask this question, please know that I'm far from a professional. Lol. How does it run without a fuel pump? After reading your question, I did a couple minutes worth of research. I was able to find a fuel pump for that model mower and that particular engine. I'm curious now.
Maybe 3 times in 60 years I have seen an engine not run because of a bad spark plug or coil-- it is vary rare --- when I get in a machine- I don't even check plugs and coils
I agree. I was working on one of the push mowers I acquired from the "junk pile mower" video and I had to replace the coil on it. That's the first one I've ever actually replaced.
I bought my YT4000 with the 24HP Briggs & Stratton new back in about 2013 and I have not had any problems with it; always starts as long as the battery is good & strong. I never had any problems with the choke situation. I keep the oil changed every couple of years and of course keep the oil level good.... replace plugs if I think they need changing...keep air filter cleaned off after just about every mow on my about 2+ acres yard. I put on a new in-line gas filter a couple of years ago. Ya know...just the common sense maintenance stuff. After every mowing I blow off the blade deck, open the hood and blow off any built up dust & leaves & dirt. And of course keep blades sharp and replaced as necessary. One thing that I wish it had was a cutting depth setting half way between the numbers. Three is rather too close for my needs and four is almost a little too high. I'm not looking to have a "yard of the month" out here in rural America, so I just live with #4. I am very pleased with my YT4000. I try and take care of it, and it takes care of me...LOL..!!
Fat boy Joe, after looking inside the carburetor I thought it was probably the fuel pump diaphragm getting hard. Stupid ethanol ruins the fuel system, does nothing for our fuel situation, and is a complete bust.
I agree. I've started spending the extra money to buy the non ethanol fuel in a can for the smaller stuff that doesn't get run as often. This year, as the mowers get low, I'm going to put a gallon in them and cycle it through before I park them for the winter. I'm sure it will make a huge difference.
@@AverageJoes4u *** Try this *** Get a gallon (or more) of Gas-a-Hol in a larger, sort of see-through, container that is not going to be 'eaten' by the gas. Add 1/4 + more water than the amount of gas (into the can). Shake the can to get the gas in contact with the ethanol in the gas and the water will "grab" all the ethanol and 'tie it up'. Let it settle for, oh, say, an hour or so and the water-ethanol will clearly settle to the bottom ** and the pure Gas will float on top.** Siphon off the all the water / Ethanol from the bottom and just the Non-Ethanol gas is left and ready to go. Note, the water and ethanol (and a very tiny bit of gas) will evaporate in an open pan outside over the summer so no hazmat worries. - Joe -
Good to know. I'll keep that in mind. I actually ended up giving this mower to a buddy. He went through it and discovered I made a boo boo when I went through the carb.
MY NEIGHBOR HAS AN OLDER PRO KOHLER ENGINE 26/27 HP. IT SEIZED UP. CHECKED FOR VAPOR LOCK, DRAINED OIL NO METAL, CAN NOT ROTATE CRANK. MAGNETOS FREE, ANY IDEAS??? IT RAN BUT SURGED AT IDLE. ANOTHER NEIGHBOR HAS ONE WHICH SURGES BUT RUNS. I BELIEVE KOHLER MADE A MOD TO THESE NOT SURE WHEN WHAT ?? RON NEW JERSEY
I'm aware. It was more for effect. It had been some time since I'd tried it but the previous time, that is how it behaved. After half a dozen or so times, it would crank and run. I was hoping to catch that on video just to illustrate the full problem I was having.
@jakesnacks1149 you can take the air filter out and spray it in the intake tube. Go easy. Starting fluid is hard on a motor. It's fine for a quick diagnosis but don't use any more than you have to.
The way this guy slams around stuff I would not let him "Work On" my bicycle, let alone something with an engine.. I recommend that he watches some Mustie1 or Steve's Small Engine Saloon, and learn something on diagnosis?? And YES this comes from a Master Tech with over 40 years under my belt...
While I appreciate your evaluation of my channel, I have never claimed to be a "Tech" of any kind nor have I ever suggested that my videos were for instruction. I am a huge Mustie fan and if I were trying to emulate him, my channel would be more like his. It's not. While I normally welcome the unsolicited opinions that always find their way to my channel, quite frankly, I didn't ask for yours nor do I care what you think. If you find no value in my videos, please, skip right on by. There is no shortage of assholes on this planet so be unique my friend.

Oh, I DO find "value" in this video...It sure shows how to hack a repair! And as you said also there is no shortage of assholes (And HACKS) on U-Tube..Thanks again for reminding me of your intent of this channel...
