In this Episode, we will explore the possibility of overclocking the ACA 630, an accelerator card from 2010, over its rated clock speed of 25 MHz. How much higher can we go? Watch this Video to find out!
Tempting to try this as I just made a 600/ACA630/Indivision/Subway setup this week. I thought Jens had bragged that 25Mhz was optimal because of carefully calibrated RAM timings, so a faster CPU would not give much benefit. I think this looks pretty beneficial.
So far, 40 MHZ seems to run well. I may try to find an active cooling solution just to be safe or reduce the clock to 33 Mhz, which still provides a nice performance gain over 25 MHz.
Yes. I also have a V3 but with the current adapter it came with, it doesn't let me close the case on my A600. It sits too high, interfering with the Keyboard. Soldering is required to remedy this of which I am trying to avoid.
I know, I somewhat cheated by swapping the CPU for a higher rated unit. I did this because the Heatsink gets pretty warm even at 25 MHz and I didn't want to kill the thing :) I did try a 100Mhz Oscillator, running the CPU at 50 MHZ, as mentioned in my Video, it failed to boot, bringing up the Kickstart Expansion Diagnostic Screen, listing the card as Failed. I bet the timing logic of the card has been exceeded at this point. 40 MHz seems to be the limit (with an 80Mhz Oscillator). I plan on a video in the new year on the M68030TK Matze Turbo Card for the A500. It allows overclocking via Jumpers, apparently making this the fastest 68030 Accelerator Card for the Amiga... this should be fun :)
It is installed but I am not currently using it. I am using the onboard MapRom function (via ACATune 1.91). For some reason, it gives me a slight speed GUI speed boost over the MMULibs, MMULIbs works fine otherwise.
I wonder what would happen if you installed a genuine MC68RC030@ 50mhz Chip, then changed the crystal oscillator to 100.00Mhz to see if u can pump this baby to 50mhz. It may be a limiting factor of you 030/40. Some revisions or earlier batches do not like overclock beyond 40mhz. Just letting you know! :)
I do have a 50 MHz 030 on order from eBay. I may give this a shot when it arrives. If nothing else, it may help the card run a bit cooler if I keep it at 40 or 33 MHz. We shall see :)
