The Bachelors gown is worn closed and generally does not include a hood. The guy on the right looked ridiculous since the hood he had was hanging too far down his shoulders. His tie going over it was even more comical. The exaggerated posing at the end was just embarrassing. The instructions were wrong and you were too concerned about being slick.
this isn't American academic dress so the bachelor's gown does not have to be closed. I was under the assumption that all higher education degrees included hoods (except associate's cowls). I also don't know if it's different, but in American academic dress, at least, the tassel is worn on the right and moved to the left during bachelor commencements. all further degree commencements = the tassel remains left.
HK academic dress is based on British designs which are not worn closed. Regarding the hood, American bachelors do get hoods but they've never been worn in many places due to some convention I know not of. You're correct about the hood being worn too far down; the neckband should be worn close to the neck with the tie over to secure it, but it's been common that a lot of places purposefully make people where them in a shawl-like way due to ignorance of how hoods are meant to be worn.
