Where do you think UNC is a better fit - the Big 10 or SEC?

SEC, we love smart people hehe.

It is a better fit in the Big 10,but will probably end up in the SEC due to the new UNC leadership. Having had a daughter who was a student athlete at UNC,I can tell you that the fan base is basketball focused and is not an SEC type of fan base for football.

Im confused as to what exactly the value proposition is for the Big10 or SEC to bring UNC. Less than a million viewers per game. That’s no value. Big name matchups like OU v Texas, Bama vs Georgia. What hype can be made out of Texas vs UNC? Zero hype value. So I’m not seeing the actual value they bring to the table.

They are a Big12 level school and mid Big12 at that.

On top of all that, they are handcuffed to even lower tv ratings NCSTATE. How are they supposed to hype tOSU v NCSTATE? They are all hat and no cattle.

FSU did not lose the law suit in North Carolina. The judge just denied the motion to dismiss the suit. The case is proceeding and the suit in Florida is proceeding as well, as the Florida judge denied the ACC motion to dismiss that particular suit. These suits could take years to be resolved, but FSU and Clemson will probably still leave before the suit is resolved, leaving the amount they have to pay in damages for leaving to be determined by the litigation.

The UNC guy said that NIL is the reason this is happening. Last I checked, schools couldn't directly pay players (legislation pending). So NIL collectives are independent of the universities, although they do have association to specific universities.

@@eddiepolicastro2773 The guest totally lost me when he said "Red River Bowl." I don't even follow the Big 12 but I know what the Red River Rivalry (formerly RRS) is... And yes, I know it's going to be an SEC game from now on. Nathan really, really shouldn't be talking about football... ever. There are elementary school kids who know more about college football than he does.

'87 UNC Grad here. Like it or not-UNC will be a punching bag in football. A record stuffer for the top teams in either league. UNC agrees to be that in exchange for a full share of the conference money in exchange for raising the visibility of the basketball program in the post-season. Before all you SEC and BIG10 fans start chirping about his year's results, just examine what your 10-year, 20-year, 30-year record has been in the ncaa tourney. Despite last year's result, UNC is a regular member of the tournament field and a frequent attendee of the Sweet 16 and Final Four in the last 25 years. Those are the facts and they cannot be disputed based on current data.

Agreed that UNC is a huge brand in a big market, but realignment is being driven by football. I still think they get to a P2, but it is a fair knock against them.
@tarheel7406
@tarheel7406 2 месяца назад
"Like it or not-UNC will be a punching bag in football." Not likely. a) UNC has been an underachieving middle achiever in football but does have aspirations and a high ceiling. b) This P2 consolidation will have a parity effect, as all of the top football talent will go to the ~48 teams that make the P2 cut.
@saturdayswarriorbyu
@saturdayswarriorbyu 2 месяца назад
Your argument for why they could succeed in the SEC is valid, but I'd still say its more likely they get beat up on than they succeed. Not saying they won't, simply that they are going up against schools with the same financial resources but have been competing at that level for a lot longer. Plus their fan bases demand success in football.
@tarheel7406

@@saturdayswarriorbyu Of course there will be a transition, but UNC has advantages. It's already a huge overall brand. Being a flag in a larger, fast-growing state in the Southeast are also advantages over even CLEMSON and to a degree FSU. I have no real concerns about football after an upgrade or academics after a downgrade. I'm more concerned about the effects of transfers and the P2 consolidation on men's basketball and the effects of any decentralization on UNC's non-revenue sports.

There will be 3 conference’s & if he is unaware that UNC & NC State were hook together. But, more recently the two needed landing spots. Coach Mac Brown said, UNC & NC State could land in the in the Big XII.

The movement and expansion of the SEC and and Big 10 and the inequality of money earned by those conferences compared to the ACC, the playoffs, etc, should break the “Grant of Rights” simply because of fairness. When the Grant of Rights was signed, it was a totally different landscape than it is now. UNC should jump in with FSU and Clemson.
@saturdayswarriorbyu
@saturdayswarriorbyu 2 месяца назад
Fairness? I don't think that's a valid reason. They had a great TV deal when they signed it. So did the Pac-12 when they signed their last deal, but by the end it was at the bottom. The difference is their deal was only like 10 years long. Now if they can show that the ACC didn't uphold their side of the deal, then they have a case.
@tomsmithdeal775

A few points need to be made here. First, every contract can be broken. It’s just a matter of money. How much is it going to cost to get out of the contract. Major corporations break contracts. There is nothing immoral about it. It’s just business. Secondly, FSU a is not seeking to break the contract but to force the ACC to the settlement table to negotiate a buyout. Once the two parties agree to a number, FSU will pay that amount to the ACC and the contract will be considered fulfilled. Again, it’s just business.
@saturdayswarriorbyu
@saturdayswarriorbyu 2 месяца назад
I'm with you on this. But my initial understanding was that the ACC had all the leverage with no incentive to negotiate. And by doing so and putting the conference in jeopardy or diminishing its value would be irresponsible. But based on my understanding of the legal proceedings, the schools may have more leverage than we all thought.
@frictionhitch
@frictionhitch 2 месяца назад
No they don't. UNC simply doesn't have the viewership to warrant a new invite to either the BIG10 or SEC. They would be ranked 9th in the BIG12. That is to say that 8 teams in the BIG12 are more important to TV partners than UNC. Kansas is more likely to get an invite because more people watch their games.
@saturdayswarriorbyu
@saturdayswarriorbyu 2 месяца назад
It is crazy when you break it down that way. It's hard to believe a brand as big as UNC could be left out.
@tarheel7406
@tarheel7406 2 месяца назад
a) NC would have a media value per viewer higher than any new BIG12 team b) AS a huge overall brand, UNC would have a higher ceiling that anu new BIG12 team. There's a reason so many reporters and analysts say that UNC is the top expansion target (ignoring wildcard ND).
@frictionhitch
@frictionhitch 2 месяца назад
@@tarheel7406 UNC needs 14 BIG10 teams to vote them in. If 5 say NO then it won't happen. I can think of 6 maybe 7 that would say NO but tbh it might be unanimous. UNC simply won't increase the per school payout for either the media deal or CFP. FSU brings in way more viewers and commands recognition for the CFP payout. The people saying that UNC is the "Top expansion target" are full of it.

@@frictionhitch The B1G has been trying to get UNC for years. I doubt there would be that many (if any) objectors now. The B1G has pressing demo concerns to address. Again, if your logic doesn't reconcile with observations, re-examine your logic.

This guest really doesn't know what's going on. UNC doesn't schedule the best. They could schedule teams like LSU, UGA (close to it), Alabama, Ohio State, USC, Texas, OU, etc. UNC would rather schedule Georgia State, App State, Minnesota, Charlotte, JMU, South Carolina, TCU, UCF, etc. UNC doesn't schedule the best teams OOC. UNC doesn't get any respect in football because they haven't earned any respect in football. "Red River Bowl." This guy should not be talking about football. He doesn't know much about conference realignment, either. UNC is not a land grant school.
