Interestingly, the speed of a signal through a fiber-optic cable isn't the speed of light. It's around 67% the speed of light depending on the grade of cable. This is because fiber-optic cables have a refractive index above 1, normally around 1.45. As the light is being refracted in them, the distance the light needs to travel to reach it's destination is greater than the length of the cable. Thus the speed of the signal is slower. Typically around 214,000,000 m/s You might find it surprising that the speed of an electric field is exactly that of the speed of light: 299,792,458 m/s Though in the real world, copper latency is greater for reasons such as capacitance, resistance, inductance and less signal amplifiers... Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

obviously.if cost isn't an issue....which would have cost over 150bil and still be building a full FTTP network if Labor had its way...

Can confirm. I worked inbound NBN faults for a certain big Telco and one day I kept a tally on the connection types. Recorded 37 for FTTN, ~5-6 each for FTTC and HFC, and only 1 for FTTP. Most days I wouldn't even get calls for FTTP connections. The sooner that copper is ripped out the better. Makes me wonder if a lot of those staff would even be needed if everyone was on FTTP and FW, and how much that affects the prices RSPs have to charge.

I had to call my ISP for a replacement for the NCD as it up and died on me one day. Also when I switched to FTTP it also turned out the copper was corroded. Also I would get randomly dropped from the internet sometimes, but never made a deal out of it because it fixed itself minutes later. I must thank our glorious leaders Turnbull and Abbott for what they bestowed upon me, and I got lucky by not getting FTTN.

When I was on FTTP I basically never had an issue in the 3 years that I had it. I'm on HFC and I miss my FTTP connection (and I know that's a whinge because HFC is actually pretty decent).

i just moved house this week and finally got access to FTTC, and already it is awesome compared to my old house 5 mins away that only gets FTTN, New house i get 118/42 speeds and 10ms ping which is massive. I will get FTTP in a couple months and aiming should get full 1000/50 and hoping sub 5ms ping

Whilst HFC is worse that FTTP it's really not by much -- I think prioritizing people stuck on wireless or FTTN/FTTC makes perfect sense.

My Plan with Aussie Broadband is 250/100 This is a residential plan however only avalibe to FTTP customers. $209 per month but im prepared to pay the extra for higher upload speeds.

i saw a recent FTTP installation... they dug a shovel deep trench. they claimed the reason was that NBN wouldn't pay them unless they could provide photos of the cable in a trench, they wouldn't cover bored conduit... i don't think it was even armoured.

Gee, imagine how they go about researching that water is wet. Honestly Malcolm Turnbull pushing the "mixed technology" version of the NBN was absolutely crazy; especially as his claim that copper was cheaper is absolutely bulldust. (And I don't accept for a second that he didn't know it).

My basic understand of fiber optic is that it either works or dose not so it would have to be working unlike our copper cables

Fibre is the most reliable NBN medium... no sh!t Sherlock. Pat, I'm on a FTTC Telstra 100Mb/s down (20 up 👎) plan and consistently hit between 103~109Mb/s download speed. No issues with Wi-Fi (multiple streaming devices) with that speed and a very good router.

Let me guess, the ACCC probably spent $10 million of taxpayer's money to come to the conclusion that FTTP is BEST! I would have thought that dial-up is better!

HFC here … uptime with Future Broadband is great, not even sure I’ve ever needed to call them for an issue! Download speeds on 1000/50 are fine, but it’s the upload and ping times that could do with some polish … given the chance I’d jump to fibre but I just checked the NBN Technology Choice and for my 800m run to the Exchange it’s $17k … one right turn and a straight line, northern Melbourne suburb! It’s a pity that HFC customers are going to be left till last for upgrades. Increased upload speed makes working from home or running home business better and lower ping times are better all round (but much better selfishly for gaming, lol).

Hopefully when that finish all the fttn or fttc to fttp they will focus on upgrading hfc users then upgrade those that are stuck on satellite

Would you not think that those on satellites or fixed wireless (like me) who already get way worse speeds than ftn should be higher priority upgrades than ftn?

Looks like the demonising of fttn has been a waste of time with the average download speed at 87mbs. Seems perfectly fine to me. Would be good to see the uptake of high speed plans, I assume it would be less than 20% of fttp customers again showing that fttp rollout the government adopted was the right thing.

Just got it on Monday 1000/50 launtel would be nicer if the upstream was higher but can't justify the approx 270 a month for 1000/400 , feels like 1999 again with 10mb Cable. Only problem is some of my clients on my network need upgrading as they are only hitting 150 mb

Launtel dropped the price for the 1000/400 just today, it's gone from $9/day to $6.40/day so not that much more than the $4.20 for 1000/50 (which did not see a reduction in cost)
