I'm 51 days away from finishing my ADN program and I have paid a grand total of $95 in tuition for my entire program thanks to scholarships offered by my school. For my husband and I, not having debt was a huge factor in planning my education. As an added bonus, it is a wonderful feeling knowing that when I graduate, I am not tied down to working full time for the forseeable future to pay off student loans. We can start our family after I get comfortable as a new grad and I can work as much or as little as I want to when we have young kids and still retire early. It's taken me 6 years to get my ADN, so it has definitely been a long haul made more complicated by my husband's military career and frequent moves, but so worth it for the financial freedom.

Something else to consider with ADN: In my area most programs allow you to sit for LPN boards after your first year in the program. If you want to work ASAP this is a great option . I worked as an LPN while finishing my RN and now am enrolled online for my BSN .

Hi Nurse Liz! I love that you made this video because I was undecided if I should apply to my local community college’s ADN nursing program, which has a good reputation in my area, or to pursue an MSN Entry Level program at one of my state’s universities. My end goal is to be an RN and starting out as an ADN would be a better option for me and then I can advance to a BSN!

Very helpful! I thought I wanted to do the ABSN but I do have a child and a high paying job so just quitting my job was not an option. After being accepted into both an ABSN and ADN, I chose to go with the ADN because 1. Total cost was $10,000 and the ABSN was a min of $35,000 (not including everything else involved). 2. The ADN was "2 years" but since all my pre-reqs were completed I take 1 class a semester and it is actually only 21 months of classes. The ABSN is a straight 17 months no-breaks and for me that wasn't a good option to be able to spend time with my family. 3. I was able to go part time at my job (nurse recruiting) and they are already planning on me working with them when I graduate if i want to. I do already have a BS so, if I like nursing, I will do an online bridge to BSN or MSN in the future. With the nursing shortage at the moment a lot of places just need RN's so it really doesn't matter, at least in my area.

Very good video! Another option is that you can bridge from ADN to MSN and skip having to get a second Bachelors if you find that appealing. They typically range from 2.5 to 3 or 3.5 years. You can bridge from ADN to MSN with focus on FNP, Education, Administration, CNL and other specialities.

Hendrixchick check out state schools.. many have such options... though even some state schools had stated requiring students to find preceptors, as far as what I’ve heard. Apparently, according to the Sawyer Initiative, the requirement for schools to find preceptors was out in place as of 2019... but it is reliant on students to report when their school is out of compliance. sawyerinitiative.com/news-and-development/we-did-it/ I think this to be true, I saw one school, Herzing University, who formerly required students to find their own preceptors, send out an email where they expressed they would find preceptors for students that couldn’t locate them or needed support. They literally come out and say that in the end, they will find a preceptor. That’s a huge change Bey as many schools formerly used vague language like “will provide ‘support’ in locating preceptor”. This requirement is apparently in tandem with the continued accreditation requirements for CCNE accredited programs. Apparently, there wasn’t an extended grace period given for program to be progressively come into compliance... the rule is enforceable now. www.aacnnursing.org/CCNE-Accreditation/Resource-Documents/CCNE-Standards-Professional-Nursing-Guidelines The folks are the Sawyer Initiative acknowledge that not all schools will be prepared to comply with the new standard, but it is in place, now it’s our job to make sure a students know and support holding schools accountable to conform with the standard.

This is what I'm hoping to do. My end goal is FNP. I have a degree in biology currently but I think that the accelerated BSN would be too difficult for me. I tried it last year and I did well in classes but I was completely stressed out and had a mental breakdown. Also, I want to work as a can while in school. I'm so confused about what to do. Maybe if I move somewhere cheaper I can do it so I dont have to work. But I think ADN would be more my speed as far as the pace of the class and more interaction with the instructors.

the best way isn’t always the fast way. i’m not in agreement in how fast some of these programs are. you cannot make a competent nurse in 12 months, or 14. I’ve been preceptor to both accelerated and associate degree newbs, and they were all equally clueless in the beginning. it take about 2-5 years of clinical practice to create a solid floor nurse. some ppl want to go straight to NP after only one year of experience which i think is horrible.

If I were you, since ABSN programs require so many pre reqs and end up being not so accelerated, get your ADN at a local community college that will most likely transfer some courses from your BA in Psychology, then get into an ADN to MSN bridge program. Some ADN-MSN bridge programs will let you work part time as an RN.

Sorry you feel the ADN was your only option. My sis is an ADN level RN. She has never wanted for a job. She is in a Cardiac step down until and loves it. Sometimes, I feel the BSN is best for RNs is a covert tool of propaganda, to fill seats in universities. Think about it...if the BSN was not seen as best, then no would-be RN would waste their time and money at a University....all RN hopefuls would go to a 2-year community college or LPN-RN bridge program at a trade school and be done in half the time and only 1/4 of the cost.

@olddadnurse
@olddadnurse 2 года назад
@@lindseychoi ive been hearing that too (since before 2017). I think at best, it would have to be staggered in but i honestly dont think it will happen anytime soon as there's too many programs that would just have to close up right at the time when NPs (basic practitioners, in essence; if we hybridly borrow the british definitions) would be most needed. I.e. lack of MD-level GPs and pediatricians. Thats not to say it cant happen but it would be a really bad idea...welp, that probably cinches it happening then 😖 But seriously, It's def preferred by the industry but accounting-wise they like paying MSNs. $$$ > everything 🙄 Otoh if there's some horrific event/trigger that occurs that discredits some MSN-trained NP, i can see it fast tracked.😳

@@lindseychoi hi lindsey, yes, i graduated with an ADN and i'm currently in a BSN/MSN (FNP) program. i wouldn't worry too much about the DNP requirement unless you're looking at a specific facility that absolutely requires it to even practice as a (nurse) provider and you HAVE to work there for some reason. employers will always look to pay the least for the most, i.e. MSN/NP are cheaper than DNP/Ph.D ;D you (and i) will still be able to practice with our MSNs. the DNP/PhD are more for the academic and titular aspect imo. it's nice but more as a terminal degree than if you're just looking to practice. don't get me wrong, if i'm up for it, i will also likely go for the DNP...if i live that long. xD there are many ADN/MSN programs but they are not the most common ofc. i picked mine mostly because my hospital pays the tuition! ^_^ i recommend the cheapest way to RN and then just let your employer pay for the rest! my advice is not to rush this journey. get your RN and then see your options afterwards. pls keep us updated! good luck!

I weighed the option of both going into an ADN program vs an ABSN program after obtaining a B.S. in Exercise and Wellness. While deciding, I completed my remaining nursing pre-reqs. Ultimately, my decision to pursue an ABSN came down to two factors: time and overall cost. Yes, the ABSN is more money up front (tuition is $36k vs $20k for the ADN program I was looking at), but I would likely be spending that money eventually because I had planned on going straight into a BSN program if I had done the ADN. The overall time commitment would have been longer if I had done the ADN route. For a traditional ADN program, it would have been 2 years + the 1-1.5 years for RN-BSN. The ABSN program I am in is 1.5 years. Also, many of the hospitals I wanted to work at (because I wanted to work in the NICU) preferred BSNs because they are all Magnet hospitals. My decision worked out well for me. I am graduating soon and have already secured a new grad position in a Level 3 NICU. However, there are many, many factors to consider when making this decision. I always tell people to do what is best for them. As Liz said, there is no wrong route. Everyone has their own, unique journey.

Hi Liz I'm in a similar boat trying to figure out what i should do. So my grades were less than stellar. My combined gpa is probably hovering around a 2.6. I know most absns have a minimum 3.0 i saw a few 2.75 and a couple of 2.5. I also have 110k$ in private loan debt and also don't want to add to that unless its worth it. Im debating whether i retake pre reqs to boost my gpa and then try an absn or if should just get my ADN and use my B.S. in psych and bridge that to an NP program. Either route my end goal is an NP. Would love to hear your suggestion and if its worth digging deeper into my debt.

I am getting my bachelors in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. I would like to work in a hospital doing either finance/marketing or administrative work and then get either a ADN or BSN with the end goal of becoming a Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). What would you recommend is the appropriate route and would a masters in Nursing or a Masters in Healthcare administration be required ?

Grandfather paid the fare! No student loans. Undergraduate, full ride playing soccer Div 1 school. ABSN IN A YEAR, with 42 days left and a wake up! Now working before NCLEX as a CNA Houston Methodist. Was accepted there nurse residency mommy baby. One question. She just re took a math test where she had to make a perfect score. She did. Is that a universal requirement?

I first considered an ABSN, yet I am now considering an ADN. Here's why... Since my Bach degree was earned more than 5 years ago, I'm required to take the biology/a&p/chemistry/stats courses again. With 1 year to retake the science courses, and not even have a guarantee of being accepted, I decided it wasn't worth it to me. I was denied a private loan, because the bank saw it rediculous (not an investment) to give me money to pay for tuition on courses I had already taken. My bach degree was Forensic Biology. After 15 years, I just want a change. Honestly, I never thought it's be so hard to get into nursing school, when I heard of the ABSN, but how wrong I was. The ADN program at a nearby college is not only going to be cheaper, but it is a long-standing program (since 1975), and a local hospital will pay off my student loan if I work there for 3 years following graduation. Also, during that 3 year period, I can re-enroll at the same college for its ADN-BSN bridge program, which will be paid for by the hospital too. ABSN: -not a guarantee admittance, even after re-taking a year's worth of science courses -expensive tuition, must be financed solely by me, since banks won't approve a loan to me to take same courses again -not able to work till after graduation, 30 months (2.5 years) away ADN: -no pre-requisite science courses required, just ACT and TEAS test scores -not any longer than ABSN option, due to having to repeat a year's worth of science courses. Like you said, no right or wrong answer, just everyone's own personal journey and what's best for them. Folks with a bach degree that is 5+ years old, need to know that they'll be asked to re-take the science courses, and the cost is on you personally, since lenders don't see it as an investment to pay for tuition for courses that are being repeated.

Completely agree. I live in NY and the ABSN I see how competitive it is (NY is considered one of the highest waiting list) . I’m going through the ADN route THEN continue on for my BSN! Financially it makes sense for me..I’ll make it work. My only concern is with this route, since this is me getting ANOTHER bachelors degree, do I need to take my liberal arts classes again? (math, English, general psychology etc) no problem with the sciences since I would have taken them still if I went the ABSN way. If anyone can offer me advice I’m all ears! Good luck everyone on your journey!

Specifically with Anatomy. I am still looking at ABSN programs both in the state of Michigan and outside of it, but now I constantly have this nagging feeling of I am not qualified. I graduate soon and I don't know what to do. Would you be willing to give advice on transferring your credits from your university to an ABSN program. Thanks.

Starting my BSN this year! I didn’t have the funds the pay for a $50k BSN. My ADN was a $10k. My hospital is a level 1 trauma center that hires ADNs and pays for your BSN and offers a new grad program and options for advancement. I couldn’t pass up on that opportunity. My bridge program is about $19k. In my case, this made sense. My bridge program is 18mos long. Whatever you choose, don’t shame another person for their situation. Cheers!

I think it would be really helpful to have some experience working on the unit prior to managing it. My best managers were nurses who had worked on the unit because they go it. So that would be my recommendation! Get at least a few years working on L&D. You can get your MSN in management. Sometimes you can even do direct entry MSN programs that give you your RN along the way with the end goal of management, and you can just work for a few years before going the manager route.

The community college (actually its called a state college now) that is near me (in Orlando) offers an online bridge program for RNs to get their BSN online. Also, the state university has an RN to BSN program as well. You don’t have to sit for the NCLEX again. If I were you I would just do a bunch of research about the programs near you and lay out all your options.
