There are accessibility requirements for new buildings but obviously not for old ones 🤗 🥰

I joined the 'Rollator gang' a few years ago and have learned some experience in Copenhagen, where I live. Rollators are fortunately free of charge due to our health care system and there are several models you can choose from. If you are going to Copenhagen or live here, I can only recommend an 'off-roader', they have thick rubber wheels so the cobblestones are not so bad and they also have a seat if you need to rest. Oh, almost forgot, and a large bag for supplies, very handy when shopping for groceries and beers 😁

I fully agree to the lack of accessibility for people with disabilities Denmark. In historical buildings, keeping the originality intact is obviously preferred over accessibility. I have a disability and rarely goes to Copenhagen anymore because of rhe lack of accessibility and parking opportunities, and i dont use public transport.

I’m Danish and I use a wheelchair when I’m out. And I agree that accessibility in Copenhagen really isn’t great. I’ve not tried using public transportation in a wheelchair myself, but apparently it’s not great. Buses saying there’s no room, train personnel supposed to help with getting on, not showing up. If I want to go out, I have to scout cafes and restaurants using photos on Google, and to make sure I usually phone ahead, so I don’t end up in a place with a toilet up or down a staircase. Most places don’t write about it. Going to listen to music is a problem too, there are a few places with good access. Also, there’s cobbled stones in many places, which really isn’t great in a wheelchair. It hurts to sit in a chair bumping around.

Centre of CPH is often difficult when you have wheels. Know that because getting kids around in trolleys and strollers. But I've also been to China a few times 😄 they try but their solutions are often rather ridiculous. Just don't be handicapped there. Happy you found some good places to visit in CPH.

To be fair, you can't expect a castle built in 1620 to feature accessibility for wheelchairs.

There are some things that can be done to make it easier for those that can also walk with a cane. But having a way to more easily get to the door would be a great start.

@@TravelinYoung There are a lot of historical buildings that are worthy of preservation, and it supposed to look like it has always looked. If design is changed it can cause a huge fine, and force it back to how it looked originally
@The_best_days_are_yesterdays
@The_best_days_are_yesterdays 5 месяцев назад
I disagree. It is certainly possible to provide accessibility for all without compromising the integrity of the building. That's why we have building engineers and architects.
@Noblemand
@Noblemand 5 месяцев назад
@@The_best_days_are_yesterdays That doesnt help if the looks are dramitacally changed when it isnt allowed. Never mentioned anything about integrety. Thats how it works in Denmark. Historical buildings are categorized into categories. And the harsest category you are not allowed to do anything that alters the look.

good episode, i havn't really thought much about accessibility for mobility challenged people, maybe its something there should be put more focus on and it actually made me think about the importance of experiencing as much stuff as possible, while you can, because one day, it might not be as easy to do so sadly. I hope your mum will get better with the mobility!

Fanø is fantastic! ❤️ Been there on vacation several times and loved it so much. Sønderho and Nordby are both really nice and cozy towns. I suffer from severe social anxiety and Fanø is the only place I’ve ever been able to relax somewhat. I love searching for amber at the beach, watching the sunset in the evening and sit in the water edge and just listen to the waves crashing. Wish I could go back. Skål i øl fra Fanø Bryghus! 🍺

You cant expect handicap facilities in a protected castle build in 1606.
@TravelinYoung
@TravelinYoung 5 месяцев назад
There can at least be a much easier way for someone who is handicap to get to the front door. That in itself would be a massive improvement and something that doesn’t affect the structure of the castle itself and a reasonable expectation.

@@TravelinYoung Ahh yes Rosenborg castle and their non existing parking. When you are a commercial driver in Copenhagen you have a somewhat heated relationship with that place, especially in the tourist season, when hordes of busses tries to park there. Sometimes in two lanes.
@The_best_days_are_yesterdays
@The_best_days_are_yesterdays 5 месяцев назад
Yes but consider that: There was no indoor plumbing in 1606; There was no electricity in 1606; There was no modern heating or air conditioning in 1606; There was nothing to regulate humidity levels in 1606; Not to mention no telephones, security cameras, or other mod cons. Obviously this "protected castle" must certainly have been retrofitted with all of these things and more, therefore it is not too much to expect accessibility upgrades as well. We can definitely appreciate and protect the past while at the same time employing modern building standards so that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy these public treasures.

If you another time have a wheelchair (buy, rent), then remember s-tog - the loko-driver have to put a ramp down so you can get in and out easy. Personally I find CPH easier with s-tog than car. Havent tried the busses.

You were to visit the birthplace of the Kingdom of Denmark, Sagnlandet, near Roskilde.
@sorensanderskov
@sorensanderskov 5 месяцев назад
You could consider in the future to have an affordable wheelchair (borrow, rent, second hand, discount shopping center) ready in the car so that you can park and “unload” farther from the entrances. If it’s not an all-day-each-day necessity but just for sightseeing “transportation” wheelchairs are not very expensive.

I have been to the us a lot of times, and that is heaven for those of us that have mobility issues. Denmark is a disaster for us. There is no rules to help the mobility impared. I would love some regulation in this area

It is not true that there are no rules. There are actually accessibility requirements for all new buildings above a certain size, but it is not always possible to retrofit old buildings.

Generally to my knowledge Copenhagen is pretty good when it comes to accessibility. But (and a big one) it is very difficult to retrofit older danish buildings since there are a lot of legal problems in modifying historic buildings as well as it being rather expensive.

I'm sorry but Chr.4th wasn't handicapped, and didn't think about those, so entering Rosenborg Castle may have some problems.

Old castles and other historic buildings are protected by law. It prohibit from making big changes from the original structure. Elevators were not standard in medieval buildings, therefore they cannot install elevators and other handicap facilities to please tourists. In Denmark we protect our history.

I commend Frederiksborg Slot and the National Museum - half of which is the old Prince’s Palace - for figuring out a way to make protected history accessible for everyone.

This is probably the most misleading video from you that I have seen. All s-trains and most regional trains have wheelchair access. On the round tower, you can drive the net all the way up.
@TravelinYoung
@TravelinYoung 4 месяца назад
Ha yeah, push someone in a wheelchair all the way up the round tower and then find out at the top there are only stairs to get outside. Quote from their website - Because of the two sets of stairs to the top, the Round Tower sadly is not very accessible for visitors in wheelchairs. As for S Trains, I have been to more than one station where construction prevented elevators from being accessible. So most the time they might be okay, but not always. This video was our experience and decisions we made along the way given my mom’s limitations.
