All the rewards you describe (money, time off, autonomy, etc.) are definitely valuable. The other thought I try to keep in mind is to 'treat every employee as a volunteer.' Meaning - they don't HAVE to be there. Many of us reward unpaid volunteers with lavish thanks and praise - but with paid employees, we often focus our conversation on 'how things could have been better.' Words cost nothing! It is valuable to offer plenty of thanks and words of appreciation to every staff member, to help them know they are making a positive impact and are appreciated. Even (especially) to provide encouragement when something doesn't go perfectly.

Yes! Thank you Cynthia, I completely agree. Making people feel appreciated and valued and praised and acknowledged is huge, goes a long way as well. Thanks for chiming in and adding this perspective :)
